Avatar n tn 5-5.0. I also understand that thyroid conditions are often missed in elderly women and should be considered when there are issues like memory loss, depression, and fatigue. My mother is having these problems and her TSH level has ranged from right above 3 to 4.5 over the past six months. I am told by family doctors that these values are within normal range and the thyroid is not an isssue. Is there a new standard for treatment of thyroid?

572651 tn?1531002957 Hello everyone, As I read the comments of yet another one of us being sent away, being told that everything is ok when you know darn well its not, I am reminded of all my heart sisters and a question comes to mind. So many women with heart symptoms are told it's in their head, and it often takes a catastrophic event (like a heart attack or even death!) to get the docs to listen and believe that something is wrong. Men with chest pains get looked at entirely different than women.
1408210 tn?1340200372 This is my first post on this topic. I was diagnosed years ago with depression and I have tried all the meds available and none help, so I have been winging it on my own, so to speak. I am a 70 yr old female with a family history of alcoholism on one branch of the family tree.
Avatar n tn I have detoxed only once (at home from the pills) and it was pure hell for two weeks (physically) and then came the depression afterwards. That clean time lasted all of three months. My question is if I detox slowly what should I expect when I take my last dose? I know that when you get around 20mgs you can start to experience some discomfort, so you go down by 2 or 3 mgs instead of 5mgs. Will I be in the same shape I was last detox or will there be minor discomfort since I did it slowly?
Avatar f tn Hi there; I also suffer with anxiety and depression, so i can totally understand how you feel. I was not prescribed Prozac, I am on Cipramil, but it takes 2 weeks according to my doctor for the drug to start working and can make anxiety temporarily increase when you first start taking it. Try not to think about if it is working or not because that will also increase your anxiety as well.
Avatar n tn Yeah, I was depressed, but depression did not cause symptoms, symptoms caused depression--discomfort, restlessness and lack of sleep! I told my husband it would go away or kill me, but I would not go through someone accusing me of being a hypochondriac again. So, I learned to live with it. I was 28 yrs old. At age 34, I became pregnant, had a hell of time. Both hands went numb at about 7 months.
Avatar m tn Women who do not have enough vitamin B12 in their blood before and after conception have a greater chance of having a baby with brain or spinal cord defects, a new study says. Most at risk may be vegans and vegetarians, since B12 is far more common in meat and animal-based foods, noted an American and Irish research team whose findings were published in the March issue of Pediatrics.. According to the study, women with low levels of B12 had at least 2.

Avatar n tn I've done a year with no answers, and a doctor today essentially told me to snap out of it, and wrote off my symptoms as depression and IBS. Don't think I could bear another 9 years of feeling this awful before someone takes me seriously!
Avatar f tn And they are effective in calming symptoms and helping with sleep. But, as I mentioned before, these drugs (originally developed and ordinarily used for Parkinson’s disease) can have serious side effects, and they don’t address the root of the problem. A longer-lasting and gentler approach to restless legs syndrome involves using needed nutrients — or key “ingredients” — to help your body make more of its own dopamine.
Avatar n tn 1 increases a-fib by 2-4 fold - granted this is more likely in the elderly, but I have personally seen it in women in their 40's. Generalizing that all hypothyroid patients do better on one medication over another is over-simplifying this complicated disease. There are patients who do better on T4/T3 combo therapy such as the dessicated hormones -- I see this everyday -- but many do well on synthetic l-t4.

Avatar n tn All of the changes you've described could certainly be triggering some symptoms of depression. I've gotten relief from similar symptoms of depression and anxiety relieved somewhat through treatment of hypothyroid. Consider yourself lucky if that resolves your worries. Whenever I hit a "rough spot" and start to notice my old patterns of behavior (symptoms) I wonder if I should take what seems to be the next step and talk to my M.D. about trying an antidepressant. Best of luck to you.

Avatar m tn My psychiatrist uses Remeron not so much as an anti-depressant in the elderly with dementia, but because it gets pretty much anyone to eat. Many demented elderly stop eating, but on Remeron they do. I think this is a very tough area, where often the patient can't advocate for themselves and doctors don't always ask the family until afterward. Then when they come off they go into withdrawal, which we know docs ignore, and they're helpless.

Many of you know that I've been caring for my elderly aunt for some time now, with the past few months, having her in my home, with my husband and I sharing the care according to our work schedules/abilities to deal with her. Anyway, last night I'd gone to bed fairly early, since I get up at 3:30 am...... about 9:30, hubby woke me up to tell me that Auntie had fallen....
