Common Questions and Answers about Depression symptoms bipolar

depression

Avatar m tn There are also a gazillion other weird symptoms that go with each of the states (depression, mania, hypomania, mixed episode). It's really complicated and there are different types of bipolar and each person is different. Personally when I'm depressed I'm REALLY depressed and suicidal and I get physical symptoms (digestive and muscular) and I hallucinate.
Avatar f tn Well there are several types of depression, major depression, chronic depression, bipolar manic depression as examples. Symptoms of depression can include an extreme feeling of sadness, sometimes you can’t sleep or you sleep too much, you cant concentrate, you feel hopeless, you have negative thoughts that you cant control no matter how much you try! you can lose your appetite or sometimes you even gain appetite. You can be easily irritated.
2190999 tn?1504988891 I have read that one difference between general depression and bipolar depression is a persons energy level. It's a matter of feeling unable to perform even the simplest daily tasks because of overwhelming fatigue, instead of the general depressive sadness, hopelessness, ambivalence, etc. Does that make sense to anyone? Another difference is the depth of depression. The suicide rate for bipolar disorder is considerably higher than general depression rates.
3579868 tn?1348739509 I know of four bipolar 1 with or without psychotic features, bipolar 2, bipolar nos, and cyclothimia. With bipolar 1 you get full blown mania and major depression, with bipolar 2 you get hypomania and major depression. cyclothimia fluctuates between minor depression and hypomania. Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in.
Avatar m tn Hi, I noticed that no one had answered you yet, perhaps it is because there may be no clear cut answer to your question. I am sorry that you are suffering from recurrent depression. I do as well. Has your doctor talked to you about any of the various "bipolar" issues? The classic "bipolar" or "manic-depression" illness has alternating moods of depression and high-euphoria.
1360950 tn?1277656603 I think the answer to your question is "yes" except that from the viewpoint of psychiatry we would say that you always "had" bipolar depression, but for many people bipolar depression manifests as recurrent depression for years before showing the energized symptoms. Which definitely doesn't mean that you were misdiagnosed, it just may take a while to know for sure.
Avatar n tn s official diagnosis is imperitive and a relief to pinpoint what you may be dealing with so definitely follow this through and get one. My bipolar symptoms were mistakenly diagnosed as severe and long term depression for many years as I commonly only show the empty, wasting, unhappy side of it all. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I think that diagnosis is kind of controversial right now, but it does illustrate the way that bipolar illness may fall on a spectrum from straight up unipolar depression at point A to full blown manic depression at point B. Bipolar type 3 would maybe be depression with only "soft signs" of bipolar disorder.
1965148 tn?1354978634 As others here have commented, a real psychotic episode, which is a very serious event, must occur in order for their to be a true 'bipolar I' diagnosis. The diagnostic 'bar' for labling someone as 'manic depressive' must be high, because of the risks of the medications that are needed to control this illness, among other factors.
Avatar n tn Where can I find info on what drugs there are for bipolar? what is the difference between bipolar and depression?
Avatar n tn There are so many different varities of bipolar as well from cyclothymia (mild bipolar) to bipolar with psychotic features to schizoaffective which is schizophrenia with aspects of bipolar (what I have and have recovered from). Too complex to discuss in a post but I'd answer specific questions. Go to "Depression Central" (for all mood disorders) for more comprehensive information. Its a great resource.
Avatar n tn Best way, aside from seeing a professional, is to look up the symptoms of Depression and the symptoms of Bipolar, see which fits your personality best, or look up the symptoms on this site.
Avatar f tn Chiari is congenital (meaning you are born with it) 2), depression and bipolar go hand and hand. 3) bipolar can be contributed by many factors. 4) decompression surgery advice and or chiari is best handled by a neurologist 5) medications and therapy would be beneficial for you (because of bipolar) this is the best way to controll depression etc. The fixations regarding medications (for bipolar can help finding the right one) and chiari is to no resolve. one step at a time.
Avatar n tn not a classical case of BP he could have been dx OCD say, but underneath traits of BP so he will have had minor bipolar symptoms going back years, as many with late-onset bipolar do. Antidepressants or other meds initiate a permanent change in symptoms, causing them to become more extreme and cross the threshold into diagnosable - or clinical - bipolar disorder. Some meds can do the above, and others can cause short-term bipolar symptoms in some people.
1725558 tn?1309737496 Its important to think if the symptoms you state are adhd are there are all times or come and go with mood changes. If a person is diagnosed with bipolar then depression is a part of it and there are some forms of bipolar where depression is the main aspect and some less so.
Avatar f tn Clinical findings aside stopping smoking is rough for anyone so you can expect things to be difficult for a while and for standard symptoms from bipolar to worsen for a while. If you need any smoking cessation aides to help you can speak to your psychiatrist or doctor about it. As well they can adjust medications in the meantime so things are more stable if symptoms return.
899491 tn?1243773627 Actually many atypical antipsychotics (if not all) are FDA approved for treating bipolar as well. The full spectrum of bipolar is complex. Bipolar with psychotic features is not that rare. When a person has bipolar with psychotic features they have psychosis specifically during moodswings. When a person has schizoaffective as I do they experience psychosis all the time (as I did before my current recovery).
Avatar m tn Everyone's Bipolar symptoms can be a little different, every episode and be different. Some people with bipolar have the mania and never have the deep depression, some episodes are preceded by depression and some are preceded by mania. There are different categories of Bipolar. I would say the one thing most of us have in common is big mood swings from elation to deep depression. Anger is a very real part of bipolar, however, it can be sympton of other illness and disorders.
Avatar f tn i am on lithium and lamictal. i don't have mania. i have adhd and talk too much which can really drive away people. am i on the right meds? i don't have depression swings anymore, some anger. would it help if i worked outside the home? how do i read the amswers to the posted questions on this forum?? i am also on tamoxifen and clonapin.
1806609 tn?1374545828 I suffer from chronic pain as well as something called schizoaffective disorder which means i suffer bipolar symptoms as well as some schizophrenia symptoms. I have found my docs wall want to focus on my mental health rather than the pain so i have no found many answers for the pain either yet. I wonder if there is a link between the too disorder but i am unsure if there is. I hope you have the strength to keep trying even when it can be very tough sometimes.
Avatar m tn s I have read question treating the depression without also treating the ADHD (since it could be causing the depression). Tend to agree with you on the Zoloft. And if you are bipolar, its really nasty - http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.
Avatar f tn I've been diagnosed with depression but I was wonderig when y knew it was bipolar. It runs in my family and I'm only 19 where my cousins first major manic episodes were in their 20s. I've been on lamictal which has been the only med that's worked without side effects which has been sleepig too much as opposed to induced mania. I was just wonderig when you knew...I know I have depression but I'm wondering if bipolar meds will help me more.
