Depo provera risks

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera risks

Avatar m tn It's March of '11 and I still havent had a period, I didnt have my period, or really ever blot during the use of the Depo Provera, and I've taken tests to see if I'm pregnant but they've came out negative. Is this normal? When should I expect my period?
Avatar f tn Hi Dr. Goodman, I wonder if you have any information about how Depo-Provera can change the symptoms of ovarian cancer v. ovarian cysts? I have been on Depo-Provera for two years and it seems that it would mask all the symptoms that are most likely to identify a cyst vs. a tumour. Do you know anything about how the two would look different in the presence of Depo-Provera?
Avatar n tn I am beginning to get really concerned with depo..I was on Depo for 7!! years and was never told of any risks for pregnancy issues. Well they did say it can take up to 1 year to get pregnant but nothing about m/c's. Ok so not to freak everyone out but I have been trying to concieve with my husband for approx. 1 year and I have now had my 3rd m/c I am now going to a specialist and ALL of my tests and my husbands have been normal.
Avatar n tn I was given a shot of depo-provera yesterday...and when I asked about side affects all I was told was nausea, headache, and dizziness. After reading quite a few articles online, it seems there are a lot more serious side affects than I was led to believe. I've been having lots of chest pain and shortness of breath, but the doctor doesn't seem to think it's related to the shot.
Avatar n tn Dear Jim - Thank you for your question about your sister-in-law and Depo-Provera. I'm afraid I am not qualified to answer your question completely. I can only tell you that there may be a slight increased risk for birth defects from the this drug - but the exact nature of that risk is unknown to me. I would recommend that your sister-in-law discuss at length any potential risks with her obstetrician.
Avatar n tn All I could find was regarding Depo Provera : The current opinion on the risks of depo provera during pregnancy is: "Current data do not show any increased risk for birth defects caused by taking hormones during pregnancy." (from Hatcher's Contraceptive Technology).
Avatar f tn Hello, Depo provera is a long form of birth control and chances of depo failure resulting in pregnancy are very less. If you are apprehensive regarding the status of your pregnancy you can get it checked. Most home pregnancy tests that check urine beta-HCG are sensitive to 20-25 mIU/ml of HCG. The test can be positive anywhere from about 2-3 days prior to a missed menses to 4-5 days after, but usually it should be done 7-10 days past your missed period.
Avatar n tn If you are concerned that you are pregnant, home pregnancy tests and tests offered through physician offices, health department clinics, or family planning clinics will address the issue. Provera has theoretic risks in pregnancy and some old literature linked it to poor outcomes. There is no solid evidence that the drug is harmful. Avatar f tn I've been using Depo-provera for 1 year and 4 months, and have been aware of not staying on it for longer than 2 years due to the risk of bone loss that comes with longterm use. I've looked into Implanon but fear that because it hasn't been out for too long, the side affects have yet to be truely determined and bone loss may also be found with the use of Implanon.
Avatar n tn I have been on the Depo-provera for 10 years. I'm 27 now and have been married for 2 years. My next one is due on the 14th Feb 2012 the only time i have bleed was when I had cell's removed after another bad 'smear' test. I really want a baby my husband has 5 kids but we dont see them much (not out of choice!) Iam really scared now that I'm not going to be able to have a baby and wont beable to be the wife I want to be....
Avatar n tn Many times dating is a big issue, as well as making sure the mother knows if she is pg or not. And of course if possible they would like to prevent giving BC when pg. But depo works to trick your body into feeling it is pg by the high dose of synthetic progesterone which suppresses ovulation (which pg does anyway) and thickens cervical mucus (which pg does as well). It does not appear that there are any significant problems with having a shot and then finding out you are pregnant.
Avatar n tn I used depo provera injections for two and a half years. It's been over a year since my last injection. within the first six months after stopping the shot I gained 40lbs without a change in my diet and excercise.I was told this was unusual to gain after stopping the shot and that i may never lose the weight. Is this true? or is the only way to go back on the shot because while i was on the shot i actually lost weight.but if that's the answer won't i be trapped on the shot forever?
Avatar n tn i have been taking the depo provera shot for about 10-12 yrs, the last few yrs. i've been giving them to myself. i have been late taking it before and not had any prob.. i about 2 wks. late and i have had extremely heavy bleeding and passing clots and tissue. i have not had a period since i've been taking depo. i have slight cramps. i've only had this kind of thing happen once before when i had a miscarriage. i'm sure i gave the shot properly in my upper arm muscle.
Avatar n tn I have been off of it for almost a month and I have had no signs of a cycle. This is my second time using depo and the first time I came off of depo I had my period within 3 weeks. This time nothing. What should I expect? If its not the same as last time.
Avatar f tn I was on depo provera for 3 years and got my last injection in october 2008 its been 15 months and i have not had a period... i was given provera for 10 days with no results and bc pills for 4months and still nothing... i also had a pelvic ultrasound and everything was ok... me and my husband are trying to concieve but have had no luck... is there anything else i can do to get a period. please help!

Avatar n tn )?) thanks a lot:) Dear Jennifer: Depo-Provera injections provided protection against pregnancy for 12 weeks. After 14 weeks, the drug has been cleared from the body to a level where contraception is no longer effective. It takes the average woman 5 months following the injection (2 months after the "missed injection") to establish a normal menstrual cycle.
Avatar f tn That is also a side effect from the depo. Premature birth. There are a lot of risks that the Doctors dont tell you about the depo that are more dangerous than the pill.
Avatar n tn I have never aken the depo shot...but I would suggest going to see the Dr. ASAP, especially if you are know your body the best!!! maybe you just need a dose or two of provera to get your period started...your Dr. will tell you more about it...Let us know what you decide and what happens...
Avatar n tn i stopped taking the depo provera shot in april..i bled 2 months before my shot was due (april 30) then i bled for another month then i stopped bleeding for 3 days, starting bleeding again for 2 weeks, then stopped for about a week now i started lightly bleeding again today...with lower abdominal pains (the doctors tell me that pain is from ovulation) is this the after effects of the birth control shot? or could it be something else?
Avatar m tn What is a good birth control method for someone with bipolar disorder with psychotic features? My wife recently stopped taking Depo Provera, which I believe may have contributed to yet another psychotic episode->hospitalization. We don't want any kind of permanent solution (e.g. tubal ligation), but we need a reliable method and one that won't destabilize her once we decide to have a baby.
Avatar n tn The mini-pill is progesterone based like depo-provera. In fact it is the same thing, only in a daily pill form instead of the longer acting shot.
Avatar n tn I'm 52 years old and I was getting Depo-Provera injections for several years. Unfortunately, nobody at my doctor's office warned me of the risks associated with this. They just kept giving the injections every 3 months without discussing anything with me. I've since switched doctors. But that's neither here nor there at this point. Anyway, my last injection was in February of 2010 (I was 51 years old at the time).
1838686 tn?1324010389 What side effects are possible with Depo-Provera? Many medications can cause side effects. 268356 tn?1236006204 It has only been out since 2002. I know for certain that I do not want to go back on a form of hormones. I was on Depo Provera for right at 9 years. The side effects, most I didn't even realize I had until going off (I guess since I had used it for so long), were just awful. The plus side, I don't remember having a period after the first year. I had some slight spotting occasionally, maybe once or twice a year, but that was it. I don't want to do that again.
Avatar f tn Hello, Your gynecologist is doing the right thing by prescribing depo provera and iron pills. The primary treatment for patients with large or symptomatic fibroids is surgery. Hysterectomy (surgical removal of the entire uterus) is the most frequent operative technique used to treat this disorder. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar n tn Maybe in 10 years or so if it continues to recur. I think I'm going to go with the Depo-Provera shot. A little higher dosage to knock the body into not cycling, since the lower dosage hormones don't really work on me. Anyone been on the Depo-Provera shot that can give me advice on it? I have the literature they hand out, but it really doesn't tell you a lot. Thanks all!
Avatar n tn Here is some info that I found for you.
