I can't help with the diagnosis, but I do sympathize. The young age of 52 adds to the sadness.
Being the one to discover the dead person just adds to the pain. While it was not my brother, I discovered a neighbor who had died in his front yard from a heart attack. I believe that added to my sadness from loosing a good friend.
This forum may have some experience that directly relates. I don't know that the vicarious veins is related, but I doubt it.

My dog died yesterday of acute liver failure. She had one day of lethargy, not eating, and staggering when she walked. We took her to the vet the next day and she died. Her urine was filled with blood. I had fed her some fatty foods two days before. Could I have contributed to her death through pancreatitis? What did I do wrong?
The cause of his death was probably a combination of a COPD exacerbation resulting in oxygen deprivation to his brain and other vital organs, and the already extensive brain damage from the stroke. All of this could occur, without the cause being apparent on the CT scan of his lungs. It is unlikely that the CT scan was completely normal, without evidence of bad COPD.
Lack of info will get us every time and trust me if the doc thought you were at any risk of sudden death you would not be reading this right now because they would be attempting to stave it off or else they would all be out of business.....good luck to you tho....i think maybe you need answers right from the horses mouth here....
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Although I can't answer your question. I am sympathetic. My husband died of a heroine overdose 1.5 years ago. It's a tough road but hang in here and talk about it. Frief can be very difficult.
hello! my 11 year old lab died unexpectedly this week... he had 2 cancer surgeries of a spindle cell sarcoma 1 in his mouth 2 years ago and in june he had a large tumor removed from his neck area that was the same cancer.. he was doing great so we assumed. on monday he had a skin tag removed off of his elbow that had been there for years and recently started to bleed so i decided to have it removed with a local anesthetic. that was no big deal for him.
Depression results because of the extreme loss someone feels and is absolutely normal process of grieving. Google the steps of grieving and allow the person you are trying to help lead the way. This is a process that cannot be interrupted and it has to play out. If depression levels are dangerous to the point of loss of health, persuade them to go to a doc for medication to balance them out a little. Other than that, just be there.
I am so sorry for you and your pup, and you certainly have my sympathy for your loss. Any kind of neurological disorder is difficult (and expensive) to diagnose and treat. It's the same story with people as well as animals. Although MRI and CT scans can help pinpoint some problems, they can't diagnose them all. Sometimes medical science can't help us. It sounds like you went over and above the actions of most pet owners in finding answers and treatment for your dog.
