Avatar m tn First, to sooth my scalp, I am using chemical-free shampoos and conditioners (often with tea tree). I use them after a dandruff treatment, the t/gel dandruff shampoo set that contains 3 types of dandruff control, all of them are anti-fungal. I also use tea tree or sea buckthorn soap, which are natural antibacterials. (not sure that is needed, now i think it is a fungus). To sooth my skin, I use jojoba oil and chemical-free lotions. The olive oil hair product from Hollywood Products also helps.

Avatar n tn i dont know if it glows in the blacklight because it is flaking skin or because of a fungus? i can scratch off little pieces of skin. what could it be? its not red, its slightly lighter than my regular color even when i tan, i think maybe just because it is dead skin coming off? i work in a place with lots of blacklights so its kind if embarassing...also i am always cold so i bundle up a lot even though i live in fl. so my armpits are probably ideal for a fungus.

Avatar n tn I am a licensed cosmetologist and let me tell you; dandruff is caused by a FUNGUS. Dry skin & dandruff are two completely unrelated hair diseases. I have experienced exactly what you are going through right now and you must treat it as dry skin not dandruff. Selsun blue won't do you any good because it contains a medication used for treating the dandruff fungus. Head and shoulders may help because it is targeted for dry, itchy scalp.

Avatar n tn It is caused by yeast called Malassezia furfur which normally live on the skin of most adults. This fungus produces a chemical, which inhibits the normal production of pigment in the skin resulting in areas of lighter skin .The other differentials of your condition are Pityriasis alba which produces mild, patchy lightening of the face, shoulders, or torso. In vitiligo there is a permanent loss of pigment. It is best to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist and get checked.

Avatar m tn Hi, since last spring I've been getting dandruff in my eyebrows. It's almost always in the left eyebrow. I went to see the doctor about this around May and he prescribed an alcohol based gel because he thought it was some kind of infection or fungus and that the gel would get rid of it. The gel just makes my skin ridiculously flaky where it wasn't flaky before so I only used it a few times and stopped. I've included some photos in case it might help...

Anyway iv been using it as per the instructions on the bottle and touch wood so far my scalp does not smell like it did!!! Normally i would have had to wash my hair every day as the smell got overbearing but i waited for 3 days before i washed my hair this time!!!! Im going to use the shampoo for 3-4 weeks every 3-4 days and then reduce down to once a week. Im hoping this does the trick.
Avatar m tn I have only very, very mild dandruff which is unnoticeable unless you look for it. Also, the reaction to the treatments I've tried makes me wonder. Treatment History: I've tried several things. I tried several natural anti-fungals including: Witch Hazel, Tea Tree oil, and Coconut oil. All to no effect. I tried several anti-dandruff shampoos because of a hunch. Mostly they somewhat helped while in use, but the effect was very temporary and never completely masked the symptoms.
Avatar n tn I've had something that sounds very similar to yours. It was patches of redness and also white blotches in various areas. The doctor prescribed Selenium Sulfide 2.5%. It's a creamy substance that you rub on before bed. Apply it two consecutive nights. Within days the blotches and redness was gone. I was really happy. It's the same ingredient that you find in some dandruff shampoos. Best of luck to you!
