Avatar n tn There are two kinds of hair loss. There is hair loss with visible scalp disease and there is hair loss without scalp disease. In your case, the hair loss may be associated with both the fungal infection and another underlying condition of seborrheic dermatitis. At this point, there is really no effective medical therapy for hair loss. If your hair loss is associated with tinea and seborrheic dermatitis then the underlying disorders need to be addressed first.
Avatar n tn You can also take vit B6 and vit A and E which are good for hair and skin. Try medicated shampoos for dandruff. There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos available that can help. The most effective ingredients -- antimicrobials -- to look for are zinc pyridinethione, selenium sulfide, sulfur and ketoconazole (also available by prescription). If your hair is colored, don't use products with selenium sulfide or sulfur.
Avatar m tn I am confused what is the reason for hair loss - dandruff or thyroid. But if it would be due to dandruff then it should not fall in heavy quantity.Do correct me if i am wrong I had my T3,T4 and TSH test about 3 months ago.. T3 and T4 were normal, but TSH wasn't. Maximum limit for TSH is 5.5 and I was having 6.4 when i got tested three month ago. I am about to visit a dermatalogist. What should I do? Should I go to any endocrinologist?
Avatar f tn m going off of what I vaguely remember lol. There are 3 causes for dandruff dry scalp, oily scalp, and a fungus. The condition of your scalp is what is going to tell u which treatment to use. One remedy is ad easy as shampooing everyday and using less conditioner on your scalp. You should also try using a clarifying shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner.
Avatar n tn My scalp has been tested for fungus and was negative. My entire scalp, wherever there is hair, feels like granulated sugar, and, at times, have open lesions that bleed and ooze clear liquid. The follicles on my arms are raised and, both my arms and when I rub my arms and shake my hair, tiny, what look like tiny pieces of clear to white thread float off. It is extremely embarrassing because I look like I am covered in dust. The top of my legs burn and and the follicles are also enlarged.
Avatar n tn If severe outbreaks go untreated for long periods of time, permanent hair loss may result due to damaged hair follicles.Expect two to six months before hair growth may resume. Among dermatologist recommended treatments are shampoos containing coal tar, ciclopiroxolamine ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione. ref:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seborrhoeic_dermatitis Tinea which is a fungaal infection can also cause similar patches of hair loss.
Avatar m tn Side effects to inflammation may include temporary hair loss. If severe outbreaks are untreated for extended intervals, permanent hair loss may result, because of damage to hair follicles. You need to use medicated shampoos containing coal tar, ciclopiroxolamine ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione. For the acne, you can apply Benzoyl peroxide 4% on the lesions. ref:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seborrhoeic_dermatitis ref:http://www.webmd.
Avatar n tn i dont know if it glows in the blacklight because it is flaking skin or because of a fungus? i can scratch off little pieces of skin. what could it be? its not red, its slightly lighter than my regular color even when i tan, i think maybe just because it is dead skin coming off? i work in a place with lots of blacklights so its kind if embarassing...also i am always cold so i bundle up a lot even though i live in fl. so my armpits are probably ideal for a fungus.
Avatar f tn I am suffering from hair loss for a different reason so i can relate. My neice had something which sounds like the same problem you had and had to use a special shampoo for about a year and her hair did grow back. It Took a long time but it grew . I know being 14 is hard to have problems with losing hair . But thank goodness that you can still look very pretty with with weaves and wigs .
Avatar n tn I am a licensed cosmetologist and let me tell you; dandruff is caused by a FUNGUS. Dry skin & dandruff are two completely unrelated hair diseases. I have experienced exactly what you are going through right now and you must treat it as dry skin not dandruff. Selsun blue won't do you any good because it contains a medication used for treating the dandruff fungus. Head and shoulders may help because it is targeted for dry, itchy scalp.
Avatar f tn Dear Doctor, I am an Indian female and got long hair, i got relocated to America 5 months back and for past thre months my hair are in a bad condition i m experiencing severe hairfall, i got a little bit of dandruff and i use dandruff shampoo and conditioner twice or thrice a week,I use herbal essence shampoo n conditioner, But my hair are gettting worse day by day, i m experienceing handful of hair everytime i comb and when i wash my hair, the condition is worst.
Avatar n tn So I went to a dermatologist, who gave me some shampoos that were supposed to help stop hair loss. instead the shampoos made my hair loss worse and gave me dandruff. I started experiencing severe burning sensation on my scalp. It felt like someone is pouring acid on it. It even felt painful to move my hair in any direction. It was so excruciating I ended up in the urgent care twice. They ran a bunch of thyroid and hormonal tests which came back fine.
Avatar n tn hair loss is just hair loss dude, I can relate to that :-(

Avatar m tn If it helps, it probably is some sort of organism causing irritation and the hair loss, and something like ketoconazole cream or even lotramin would be the thing to do. I would go see another dermatologist about it before trying to treat it yourself. Dandruff shampoo should help a bit, but when I had eyebrow and face "dandruff" (seborrheic dermatitis), it was a course of ketoconazole cream that did the trick, and not the dandruff shampoo.
Avatar m tn Please consult a hematologist if iron deficiency is detected. Hair loss can also be due to dandruff, dermatitis, shampoos, oils, soaps, dust and dirt etc. Thyroid disorders and diabetes too could be a cause. Insomnia, stress and anxiety along with poor diet and excess of caffeine too can be the cause. Hope this helps. Take care!
Avatar f tn If no fleas, why the Advantage and why weekly? He is using it topically between the shoulder blades? I think I would stop the Advntage. Did you ever have flea collars on them? Do you have collars on them? Odd it is all 3 and only the neck area.
Avatar f tn ll do wonders for your hair too. Before I cut my hair, it was always very healthy for mid thigh length hair and I did that once every few weeks. Just shampoo it out like normal in the shower. Also, wash your hair everyday, or every other day. If I go too long like 3-4 days with out washing my hair, i get a bit itchy too. But when I workout regularly, I wash daily since I workout hard and sweat.
Avatar f tn I had smelly scalp also, so I tried the Jason dandruff shampoo, it's like a miracle, no stinky scalp! I alternate with my regular shampoo. So far so good. By the way my doc had me on anti-fungal pills and shampoo neither worked. I definately like the no drug alternative.I'll keep you posted.
