Avatar f tn Hello, From the symptoms this problem of dry itchy scalp can be due to dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. You can treat flaking and dryness with over-the-counter dandruff or medicated shampoos. Shampoo the hair vigorously and frequently (preferably daily). Active ingredients in these shampoos include salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole, or selenium. But if your hair is colored, don't use products with selenium sulfide or sulfur.
Avatar f tn m going off of what I vaguely remember lol. There are 3 causes for dandruff dry scalp, oily scalp, and a fungus. The condition of your scalp is what is going to tell u which treatment to use. One remedy is ad easy as shampooing everyday and using less conditioner on your scalp. You should also try using a clarifying shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner.
436973 tn?1217947089 Hi, just wanted to add some resources to back up my earlier post about the other causes of dry skin. In case other people read this thread, it may help them to see that there can be an underlying health condition that causes the dry skin. I copied this- Many diseases and conditions affecting overall health affect the skin a s well. Low thyroid levels, allergies, kidney and heart disease, seborrhea and many other problems cause or contribute to dry skin.
Avatar m tn I am 28 years old male. I have itchy scalp because of dandruff and my hair looks dry and damaged. One year ago I had good volume of hair but currently I had lost more hair reason because of dandruff. I feel very embarrassed. I was using coconut oil for my hair from my childhood and was still using it. But from one week I stopped using oil because when I use it now my hair look less and to hide it I don't use it. When I don't use oil my hair looks more.
Avatar f tn I really wish i knew what was wrong with my scalp - ill accept anything as long as it isnt lice - perhaps the treatment just wont work? My scalp feels more dry than oily and the dandruff flakes are small and white and do remove from my head when i scratch - reassuring me they arent lice eggs.
Avatar n tn I have an itchy dry scalp. I cant stop picking the dryness spots off it. It is sore to touch at this stage. What can i do??
Avatar n tn I have never had dandruff before. The flakes are pretty big and there is this one spot where if i go to scratch my scalp it always bleeds. I have tried changing shampoos and washing my hair with cold water instead of hot but nothing has made it go away. I notice a reduction in flakes the day i shower but after that it gets worse. Im not sure if i should see a doctor or not. What could it be?

277836 tn?1359666174 Dandruff is just the shedding of dead skin cells to expose new cells and is not only normal but necessary. If the shedding is excessive, it may indicate a prior buildup of dead cells that were not properly shed. I agree with others that shampooing is not beneficial and dries out the skin. Frequent light brushing is far better for removing dead cells as well as stimulating oil production.

Avatar f tn You can tell its dandruff or dry scalp by the colour and if there is a smell present or not. Dandruff is yellowish and gives off an odour.
