Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel weight

cytomel

Avatar n tn Weight becomes an uphill battle with hypothyroidism. Has anyone lost weight on cytomel? What will it take to lose weight while having hypothyroidism and being on cytomel? I know the side effects of cytomel includes weight loss......but how much time do you have to be on cytomel for to start seeing those side effects? I can use any help on this. Thanks in advance.
Avatar f tn I am weight training as part of my exercise routine. I used to take Creatine drops to supplement my energy and endurance. Now that I am on Cytomel, can I still do this? Finally, are there any safe fat burners and energy boosters that can be taken with Cytomel?
Avatar f tn Hi, Thanks for the informative response re the debate that I've had with "the battle of the endos"...lol... My TSH is 2.82 My T3 is 118 My T4 is 6.8 Also, estradiol was extremely low at 14, along with vitamin d at 17 (which I am now supplementing the d), but don't want hormone replacement therapy as my mom died at 51 with breast cancer and my sister died at 64 with stomach cancer (I'm 48).
Avatar n tn I had a total thyroidectomy 6 years ago and had gained 40 llbs since then. A year ago I started 12.5 cytomel. I never felt better in my life! I was on 125 levothyroxine and 12.5 cytomel to clarify. My doctor said I would not lose weight due to the cytomel. I don't know if it was the cyt or just me feeling better with no more fatigue that made me lose weight. I dropped 25lbs. Two months ago found out I was pregnant and was taken off the cytomel and my levothyroxine was raised to 150.
Avatar n tn I wouldn't advise adding cytomel without knowing what your actual thyroid levels are -- that's Free T4, Free T3 and TSH. T3 med (cytomel) is about 4 times more potent than the T4 med (synthroid) and it can really throw you for a loop if you don't need it. It can cause very rapid heart rate, palps, etc. Whenever cytomel is added, the T4 med should be dropped accordingly. Did you receive the cytomel from your doctor or as a script? What did your doctor say about adding it?
Avatar f tn She is hypo, however she looks great, she told me she used to have a hard time loosing weight even exercise daily. Her doctor precribed Cytomel at low dose with Synthroid and she said she started loosing weight easier. I heard a lot of hypo patients complain of weight gain or unable to loose weight, but don't hear much of patient taking Cytomel. Is there a reason why doctors don't prescribe Cytomel much? I know Cytomel is supplement for T3 and stronger.
Avatar n tn Hi kimberlyn1234, I am on both Synthroid and Cytomel. I was just reduced to 75 Syn and remain at 25 Cytomel. My doctor explained it to me like this: Synthroid is a synthetic T4. Your thyroid works to turn this into T3. Cytomel is a synthetic T3, so it goes right to work without having to go through the "processing". I didn't start on Cytomel but it was added a few years after my diagnosis because my T3's were still low.
894666 tn?1274097896 Has anyone ever had a similar problem. If it is the cytomel, I think I need to stop taking it. I was hoping it would help with weight loss, which is has not.
Avatar n tn The portion of your thyroid that was not removed is working the same whether you are on meds or not. Meds do not stop your thyroid from working. If you are not taking your meds any more, you will become HYPOthyroid again. Since weight gain can be a symptom of hypo, it's possible that you might gain weight. Weight gain is all very individual, so it's just about impossible to predict how your body will react. How do you feel now that you have been off meds for two months?
Avatar f tn How can I keep the weight gain at bay until the cytomel leaves my system? What can I do to keep the weight off when everything I know (diet and exercise) don't work? How long until I should start feeling normal again?
Avatar f tn There really is no other explanation for my weight gain. Looks like the doctor will lower my dosage of Levoxyl and keep me on Cytomel. I just have too much thyroid hormone in my body I guess? Synthroid made me feel really shaky, nervous, gave me dry mouth, etc. I felt fine on Levoxyl until I gained all this unexplainable weight and just recently have been feeling really bad, such as chest pains, shortness of breath.
Avatar n tn I am on 125mcg of synthroid and want to add cytomel because of still suffering from fatigue and weight gain. My physician prescribed 25mcg of cytomel and said to discontinue the synthroid. I cannot get into an endo until Feb. and would like to combine the two but am not sure what doses to take reducing my synthroid and adding the cytomel?
Avatar f tn s fairly rare for somone to be on Cytomel only. Usually a small dose of Cytomel is added to the Synthroid, which may have to be reduced to accomodate the Cytomel. Cytomel (T3) is very fast-acting, so it has to be taken several times throughout the day if taken by itself. This leads to intra-day ups and downs in hormone levels. Do you have the results of your latest lab tests (FT3, FT4 and TSH) and their reference ranges?
Avatar f tn I have no explanation for the weight gain -- however, the cytomel dose is excessive and the TSH of 0.00 reflects that you are HYPER on the current combination of cytomel and levothyroxine. Would consider a second opinion from a local endocrinologist to determine a safer and better replacement regimen and see if there is any other identifiable cause of the weight gain.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am wondering what everyone's experience is with Cytomel in regards to weight loss and how long it took to have a measurable loss. Thank you!
Avatar n tn Well, I tried a new endo since I still live with all hypo symptoms and asked for Cytomel with Synthroid. He reluctantly agreed to give it a try. He has prescribed lowering my Synthroid to 100 and adding Cytomel 5 b.i.d. for a total dose of 10. I think that seems a little high? My labs are: TSH 1.68. FT4 1.06. Total T4 9.7. Total T3 0.88. Total T3 uptake 37%. I do not know if Cytomel will help or not, but I am willing to try it versus living with the symptoms forever and ever....
Avatar n tn says I am cancer free.I am on cytomel.50 mcg tablet, when i started taking medication my weight was 136 lb ,in one year I have lost down to 119.lb.i have stoped taking the meds at times and i gain weight. I am at my wits end what should I do iget so tired and weak when i take the med.I also take amitriptyline 50 mg(FF),omeprazole 20 mg cap(FF),metoclopramide 10 MG (FF),could one of these medicens cause me to have a false reading.
545991 tn?1214437112 I have had calf pain on Armour plus severe plantar fasciitis both feet. I am on 45mg for 14 weeks now and don't feel like I am handling the high levels of T3 either. I wasn't terribly hypothyroid to begin with. It has been hard to find anyone with this SAME problem in all of my searches. This is very incapacitating!!! It is the most significant problem I have in trying to take these hormones. I'm unable to exercise so therefore am gaining weight!!
Avatar n tn I also started to become very depressed. I was switched to 112 Synthroid and 5 Cytomel. The weight stabilized at 142lb - great! However, the depression is still here, I still get tired, and my toes and fingers get uncontrollably cold lately. I also started getting slightly sick in the morning about an hour after taking the Synthroid. My last blood test showed TSH of 0.1mIU/L.
744962 tn?1270942038 I was on 50 mcg levothyroxin and10 mcg cytomel and I took the cytomel in 2 doses - the first with my levothyroxin first thing in the morning, the second about 10:00. I should tell you that MY "first thing in the morning" is at 3:00 am......... So the second dose of cytomel was approx 7 hrs after the first and that seemed to get me through the day okay.
Avatar f tn Hi, Thanks for responding! My latest TSH on 2-8-13 was 0.508, On 11-8-12 my TSH was 0.719, Free T4 was 1.17 and Free T3 was 2.8. On 3-16-12 (when I was really feeling good at 137 synthroid and 10 cytomel) my TSH was 0.173, Free T4 was 1.29 and Free T3 was 2.9. I have had more labs done than this in between these months but as my TSH changed my synthroid was lowered. Because I have been terribly tired and cold and gaining the weight I lost, my Dr. added another 5 mcg's of cytomel.
903476 tn?1242237037 The dr keeps saying we have to take it slow. One of my other doctors said I needed cytomel instead. Will the cytomel regulate my thyroid back to normal? I've been 110lbs my adult life then all of sudden I'm 150 and aging a pant size per week. Cut out all sugar grains flour. All other labs are normal hyponatremia under control.
Avatar f tn Cytomel is therefore added to Synthroid to effect weight reduction. The effect of Cytomel takes a couple of weeks to set in. Cytomel can be given upto 100 mcg/day. So if you are on10 mcg/d and unable to lose weight it makes sense to increase to 25 mcg/d. Simultaneously Synthroid dose may need to be reduced slightly. Regarding any other laboratory tests besides thyroid profile at this point in time, I feel nothing else is necessary.
