Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel hair loss

cytomel

Avatar f tn Will adding cytomel to your levoxyl help with hair loss? This discussion is related to Cytomel in addition to Synthroid.
Avatar f tn Should I increase the meds regarding hair loss? Do we think that might help? I have heard that cytomel causes hair fall. Thanks so much!
Avatar f tn Hair loss is very common - in thyroid patients and non-thyroid patients. Changes in thyroid medications can cause temporary hair changes.
Avatar f tn I am at a loss. Is there a thyroid medication that will stop hair loss like iodine? Is there something I can take over the counter? About 7 months ago I started being treated for hypothyroidism. My bloodwork also showed low titers for Hashimotos. I had all the symptoms including the dreaded hair loss! With my doctors approval, I started using Iodine Plus along with Levoxyl. My hair thickened back up and shedding completely stopped.
Avatar f tn That was a pretty drastic change in Cytomel. You only lost 10 lbs, and he cut your Cytomel in half. Hair loss is often the last symptom to go away. The body heals the more crucial systems first. Hair loss is reactive and often has more to do with what was going on a month or six weeks ago than what is happening today. Is your doctor testing FREE T3 and FREE T4? Please post labs and reference ranges from before he reduced your meds if you have them.
Avatar m tn 5 I am on 50mcg of Synthroid and 5mcgs of Cytomel T4. I am at a loss as I am doing everyting in my power to help stop this hair loss. I take a very good brand of whole food vitamins, B12, 4000mcg Biotin, B complex, Hair Skin & Nail vitamins, Vit D...I pop pills all day long. I sleep 7.5 hrs a night. I've practially eliminated gluten from my diet. I eat salmon and lean meats. No soda, coffee, tea. I drink a 1/2 gallon of water each day. I use top salon shampoos.
429700 tn?1308007823 Is there anything besides autoimmune alopecia, lupus, hypothyroidism that could cause hair loss? I've noticed quite a bit of my hair coming out in the shower and hair all over the place today. Can being anemic cause this? I do have hypothyroidism (I've had it for years and have been on the same amount of levothyroxine for years). Last TSH was over a year ago, though. I feel like poop, too. I've had an upset tummy, very weak, and feeling odd (spacey, ears ringing super loud).
Avatar n tn It would be very helpful if we could have a look at your thyroid related test results from the time you were feeling good, and also from the time when you dosage was reduced. You also need to know your test results from Aug. It is a good idea to always get a copy of blood test results and write on there how you were feeling at the time, and your med and supplement dosages. Those reports are a very useful history for future reference.
Avatar f tn my numbers are: TSH 2.3 (.40-4.00); Free T4 .73 (.70-1.8); Free T3 3.1 (2.3-5.0) My doses: Tirosint 50 mcg.; Cytomel 12 mcg/day My thyroid was destroyed roughly 8 years ago; the only problems I have is hair loss and weight gain - I don't overeat, I exercise - I don't eat processed foods - I could eat 1200 calories a day - good calories and put on weight. I grow most of what I eat. Help! I am 65.
192918 tn?1199451179 So this is a very silly question - but I'm having A LOT of hair loss....to the point that I'm getting some ugly bald spots (not at all pretty on women!!) When I finally get on the right meds, will my hair grow back or will I always be stuck with bald spots/thin hair?
Avatar n tn Hi.I'm only on Cytomel as my endo feells that the Synthroid might aggravate my hair loss (side effect). Synthroid is T4 which is a storage form of thyroid hormone and is not active, needs to be converted with certain enzymes to the T3 form to be active in your body. Many docs do not want to use it because its half life is very short. I need to take it x2/day, but it's really the important hormone in your body.
Avatar f tn After being placed on Synthroid, my hair got significantly thinner, finer. I STILL am losing hair!!! Also, why did I lose hair AFTER being place medication? Isn't the med suppose to "correct " the problem??
Avatar f tn Those are totals. I know I need the frees but my current physician does totals. With the med increase I developed insomnia, racing heart, and anxiety. The hairloss increased as well. Dropped back and added cytomel a week later. Developed muscle weakness, irritability, red flushing of the face, muscle tightness and burning sensation. My t3 and Ft3 has always ran low, but have yet to tolerate a t3 med.
1484208 tn?1288454979 My scalp appears to have a rash on it and is very dry and I am having hair loss. Is this related to the medication or the change in my hormones? I am getting very self conscious. What can I do? Has anyone else had these symptoms?
Avatar f tn however, his offer to prescribe Armour might be worthwhile. Armour itself does not cause hair loss. Hair loss would be associated with inadequate levels of Free T3 and free T4. There is no need to wait for 4 months to see if the dosage change does anything for you That change will not help increase your Free T3 level.
Avatar f tn Please post your thyroid related test results and reference ranges from before the med reduction and after. Besides hair loss, what other symptoms do you have?
Avatar f tn My ENT prescribed Cytomel for me to take from now until my RAI treatment (I just had total thyroidectomy 10 days ago and have a small papilliary cancer w/ follicular variant). Anyway, I'm not having any symptoms, except hair loss, since my surgery and I'm wondering if I should go ahead and start taking the Cytomel now or should I wait until I actually feel bad and need it? What is everyone's experience with Cytomel?
822804 tn?1298226302 I also lost a lot of hair when taking Synthroid and cytomel. Hair lost is usually attributed to hormonal fluctuation, maybe your hormones are still getting to a stable place. I do not take that combo anymore and even though I am still losing hair due to my change in doses I take now NT, which also has T4 and T3 as that combo has.
Avatar f tn I have horrible pain in my body, body temp problems hair loss, extreme fatigue and exhaustion, heart palpitations low blood presure, swelling migraines, loss of concentration, and thats just to start. In the 6 months on synthoid I have chanced strength 4 times. I started with 50 mg, 5 weeks later and after a blood test I moved to 100mg for a month, no results after 6 weeks i channged to 150mg. the doc called this move trouble shooting, then or finally I was lowered to 125mg 2 weeks ago.
1882966 tn?1320745459 There are many things that can cause hair loss; however, hair loss associated with being hypo, normally stops and hair usually grows back, once thyroid levels are where they need to be. Thyroid related hair loss is not a side effect of the medication; it's a symptom of being hypo. Some people do, however, report that once they begin taking medication, symptoms worsen for a while, as the body adjusts to having hormones its been doing without.
Avatar n tn s your thyroid have your hair loss evaluated by a dermatologist or hair loss expert to rule out any other causes. However, make sure your thyroid is not being under treated or change thyroid drug brands. It just might be the thyroid condition itself which just needs time to heal. Hair and nails are the last to heal and take the longest to heal than all the thyroid symptoms, so patience might be the only medicine.
263988 tn?1281954296 The only thing I wish is that my hyperT symptoms would go away faster. I lost a lot of hair. It was crazy hair loss and is still happening.
Avatar f tn My doctor took my dose from 75 to 88 to 100 and 15 of cytomel. I asked to switch to naturethroid due to so much hair loss and sudden weight gains Doctor put my on 2 grains. I’ve been on it for 3 days. Any idea why i have no energy and headaches? I really want to switch back. I’m an educator and need energy for my kids at school. Should I give the naturehtroid more time since it has only been three days?
327369 tn?1326119908 I have found Cytomel helpful. I'm still adjusting it, but right now I take 10mcg in the morning and 10 mcg in the afternoon. I find I have more energy. I take the generic and wonder about that though. Still working on it.
Avatar n tn Went on T3 3 years ago and did well but lately more hypo symptoms. Now will be taking 50 Cytomel and 1 grain of Armour to start out with. My systoms are hair loss, ear ringing, tired, not sleeping. Anyone tried T3 with Armour. I am praying this will work and reverse my symptoms.
