Avatar n tn When I tried, I seemed to have some kind of flu symptoms coinciding on day 5 of cutting my 25mg tablet in half. My heart rate went to 100. Because I was dehydrated, the nurse said I should go back on the 25mg. 10 days has gone by, and I am trying again. This time I am taking 3/4 of the 25mg, and on day 3 my heart rate is starting to go up. Not too bad, 81-85 or so, and i am feeling a little jittery. I am 46 and have had scans done and a echo done, and everything looked good.
Avatar n tn 5 Toprol isn't very much, in fact when I asked my cardiologist about perhaps cutting my 25 mg in half he said he'd never heard of so little having any real effect at all. Still perhaps you are ultrasensitive to it. I'd mention this to the doc.
Avatar n tn I had a run of tachycardia (Ave rate on 24hr holter was 118 -echo normal) & my cardiologist put me on 25mg of Toprol. The 1st 2 days I took it, I got really fatigued & SOB. I began cutting them in half so I could funtion & now I still feel icky. They are notorious for weight gain, cold/swelling feet/hands etc. Now I have a stiff neck. I may have to just deal w/ the tachy bc I didn't feel this bad prior to the meds.
Avatar m tn i am taking toprol xl 25 mg (half in am and half in pm. it seems to be working on bp but when i am up on my feet heart rate goes to 100-115. why isn't it working on hr.
Avatar n tn you won't be on a time release with standard metoprolol that is why you need to take it twice a day. I don't know why you have to cut in in half, Wal-Mart has generic metoprolol in 25mg tablets for $4.00 per 30 The problem with cutting a pill in half is that while the whole tablet contains 50mg of medicine, you don't know if it is evenly dispersed thorught out the whole tablet (it should be though) Many people report these types of things when switching from a brand name to a generic.
Avatar n tn Hi, Here is a link that describes the actions of toprol xl. On one hand, it says that 95% of the drug is metabolized in 72 hours. It also says that the blood pressure lowering effects can last up to one month after discontinuation of the drug. http://www.parkinsons-information-exchange-network-online.com/drugdb/085.html I'm not sure which side effect you are not naming, but I take toprol XL and I have a history of major depression. After my bypass surgery, I began therapy with toprol xl.
Avatar f tn He told me if I had any more episodes to take a Xanax and half a Toprol XL. That was three months ago. Now, I 've been going through another M.S. relapse the last few weeks and had another spell with my heart rate last weekend. What I am wondering is, have you ever heard of M.S. affecting the heart before? I have an appt. to see my neuro at the end of March, but I am worried about my heart and wondering if I need to get a referral to a cardiologist, or just hold on until I see my neuro.
Avatar n tn The best option might be to switch to a long-acting version of metoprolol called Toprol XL. This is a once a day medicine. Good luck.
Avatar n tn I was tempted to bag the Toprol in favor of the Atenenol I had used just for episodes of rapid beats in the past. But I found that after the second week, the Toprol seemed to start working for me, and now I have not had any palpitations, skipped beats or rapid beats for several weeks. Although the Toprol makes me a bit tired, it seems less so than with the Atenenol. Passing out sounds like something you really have to have checked out by your cardiologist.
Avatar f tn On the meds, my BP is about 117/60 or 70 something. I tried a wean by cutting the atenolol in half. My bp was the same as with the 25 mg. Then, I tried a week off entirely and had the same lower bp. Now, 2 weeks into no atenolol, my exercise tolerance is not what it used to be. For the first time in 10 years, I managed to get my heart rate up while doing cardio to about 156 bpm. Since I'm not used to this higher bpm, I felt a little queezy, so I stopped the exercise that day.
Avatar n tn I don't have allergies of any kind and I'm in excellent health and I can learn to live with the smell of fresh baked bread in my nostrils.. I mean it could be owrse.. still I think I should get someone to check this out especially as I read about Phantom smells being a possible side efect of brain tumors...
Avatar f tn I don't recommend that you go against your doctors orders, but maybe you can discuss cutting the dose in half, as I did, to investigate whether you get pvc reduction without the accompanying fatigue. Worth a shot. (?). Glad to hear that your doctor at least finally listened to your request since toperal wasn't seeming to work for you.
Avatar n tn I passed out driving on a free way, then had a couple of more episodes. I was put on Toprol XL 25mg which did nothing for my blood pressure (165/105). I went up to 50mg and nothing helped either but no more passing out. When I am laying around my blood pressure drops to 80/60 or lower. I recently read PROTEIN POWER which suggests that HBP is related to insulin so I tried the low-carb, high-protein diet and my BP dropped to normal within 2 weeks.
Avatar f tn I am planing to talk with my Cardiologist on my 6 mo check-up about cutting my BB and CC dose in half to see if it helps reduce the fatigue I feel (if it is just my age, then there BB and CCB have little to do with it). I take those durgs simply to control my HR, and I can monitor that myself and go back to the higher dose if the HR starts to climb too much. That's what I plan to suggest. Some people have a low tolerance to the side effects.
876405 tn?1243511886 Im also fellow Toprol roller coaster rider..I had an ablation for WPW in January, in hopes of getting off this hot mess of a medication. But Im still taking it for V-tach that the EP also found during the study, but left it since I had been in the lab for close to 8 hours already. He said the VT is originating in the pulmonary valve and to keep taking the toprol untill my next appt in August.
Avatar n tn MY pvc have been recently treated with toprol xl 12mg and it did stop them. However, the side effects of depression feelings i can't stand due to my high energy positive nature. My doctor suggested switching to atenolol instead. I'm scared about all that i am reading with this new mediation. Is there something out there med wise that anyone has tried that may work with min side effects? There are days that pvc are less frequent and recently they are more often. Please advise.
213044 tn?1236531060 I take my synthroid (levoxyl) first in the morning and then an hour later I take Toprol XL for my heart and Alprazolam for my head. LOL!! I'm going to try cutting my Toprol in half after I talk to my GP. The Endo said I could half my dose if I want to, and I do. My GP perscribed it though, and he knows my body better, so I will wait till I talk to him. Notice I responded in reverse order? I read magazines from the back to the front, too. LOL!! Thanks for the suggestions and support.
Avatar n tn it also disrupted my sleep. It only comes in the U.S. in capsule form so it's hard to break in half like you can with the atenolol.
Avatar m tn When I take the 150 mg of Toprol XL I have no problems with the Atrial Flutter, but I have constant pvc's throughout the day. If I lower my dose of Toprol XL the pvc's stop, but I return to Atrial Flutter in a few days. My doctor has recommended an ablation to resolve the Atrial Flutter. After the ablation I will be able to take a lower dose of Toprol XL or maybe none at all. In turn I hope the pvc's go away an stay away.
Avatar n tn It could be that your high heart rate may have been a precursor to your problem. When I was really in shape in my 30's (running half marathons etc), my heart rate seldom got above 150 during exercise. "Since the ablation (I am also taking beta blockers) I am regular but my exercise capacity has fallen off. I assume part of this is the two years I could not run, and age.
Avatar n tn Also once I start Beta Blockers (Toprol XL 25 mg) will I have to stay on it the rest of my life? My thyroid is fine, everything is fine, just a sensative S node from what I was told years ago. I dont want my heart to get dependant on some medication!!! Is exercise and alternative for me? Or no matter what I should take the beta blocker?
Avatar f tn 00 P. M. - especially if you are splitting your Levo. My friend's sister took 50 mg ZINC in the morning and at night and 100 MCG of selenium morning and night. I looked up dosages on the internet and they are all different - but these amounts are not too high if it doesn't bother you. When you feel bad you will try almost anything - I am surey ou know that.
Avatar n tn So now I take 50 mg. of Toprol XL once a day. I'm not really under control but I can go to work everyday and if I really pace myself and don't do anything too strenuous I'm willing to live with it for now. If it progresses to the point were I was before the first ablation (240 beats per minute) then I will have another ablation done. Hope this helps someone out there.
212059 tn?1292942129 i have had PVCs for 3 and one half weeks now. I spend a few days in the hospital last week having bloodwork, ekgs, an echo cardiogram and a nuclear stress test. All show that I have a healthy heart. The cardiologist put me on 25 mg of lopressor. I do not have high bloodpressure so he did not want to put me on a higher dose. It seems that when i first take it in the morning it gives me a more relaxed rhythm of pvc.
2014820 tn?1328235655 I suffered cluster migraines at up to 5 days 4 time a month, the time without migraines was less than those with, I was prescribed inderall and eventually that was changed to Toprol XL which I take today. I have never been tested for either Lupus or Hughes Syndrome, My doctor does not seem to care that I have pain, I had to beg to go to the bone and joint doc which spent 5 minutes, only tested my knee reflex, had me push against his hand with each leg and said you have neuropathy.
Avatar n tn Sometimes it gets my heart going a little whacky...but I can live with it. I also stay in shape. I jumprope about a half hour a day and it really is the best workout I've found. I used to run, but my heart rate goes up so much faster with the rope...also, I never leave my driveway and it is a lot easier on the knees! Sometimes I miss the alcohol...but it got to the point where the hangover was so much worse than the buzz. Best to everyone!
Avatar n tn It takes about 6 weeks to notice...Vit E is essential , and calcium and magnesium supplements. I am also taking Toprol XL, which is like a betablocker, but is cardiac specific and doesnt cause the bronchospasms and asthma breathing problems that most betablockers do. I didnt like the side effects of the atenolol. Try Toprol!!! I think its great - most of the time insurance does not cover it right now - but its worth it if it gets rid of these danged things. Its about $30 for a month supply.
Avatar n tn Cardiologist wants me to take 25 mg xl and cut in half if too strong. Pharmacist says no way, do not cut and do not take till I talk to my primary. Anyone have any suggestions?
