Common Questions and Answers about Cpap machines for kids

cpap

Avatar f tn @fisches -- that new age attitude kills people. CPAP machines save lives, period.
1876958 tn?1321567960 I have been diagnosed with fairly serious sleep apnea and have been using a CPAP machine (set to 15 as the pressure) for several weeks. While I have adapted to the machine, and sleep well with it, my headaches have been more intense lately. My understanding is that the CPAP machine will reduce pressure in my brain because my heart does not have to pump so much to circulate oxygen. My blood oxygen level dropped significantly at night (down to 60%) during my sleep study.
Avatar m tn Certain CPAP machines have setting the lower the pressure automatically during exhalation. Talk to your sleep doctor or DME vendor and they should be able to help you with these issues.
648944 tn?1241469694 While I do see a sleep doctor at least a couple times a year and have been retested recently because I have multiple sleep disorders, my cpap treatment has been stable for a few years and I just keep an eye on my data at home periodically. If I did not know how my data looked, I may think my cpap treatment isn't working, when it's really my other sleep disorders at issue.
332074 tn?1229560525 I know that they are going to put me on a cpap machine. I know I would do okay with the mask that is just the two little prongs that go in your nose. However in the past when I have had surgery I have gone crazy when they have put the mask over my mouth and nose. I have always had very bad allergies and can not stand to have anything touching my nose and mouth. So I was wondering how do they determine what is the best mask for you to have?
Avatar n tn I have been sleeping with the CPAP everynight for 11 years. The headaches are new. I have been getting them for about 3 months not everynight but most nights I awake with the headaches. I had my sleep study 11 years ago but the doctor have never had me go back for a new sleep study and the CPAP has never been adjusted is that normal?
Avatar f tn I just started using a CPAP & was totally unprepared for the feeling of breathing toxic air. I didn't last 2 hours using the machine & finally took off my mask when my lungs were burning & I had severe nausea. It felt like the plastic fumes from the tubing or mask was being forced into my body. I had to take a hot shower (2:30 am) & breath the steam for 30+ minutes before I felt some relief in my lungs.
Avatar f tn I agree that there are likely things he can do to make his CPAP experience less bothersome. While the surgeries available must help some people, knowing if you (or your husband) will be one of the successes is an educated guess if he has a good doctor, a crap shoot if he doesn't. Some do go on to need CPAP anyhow.
Avatar m tn I have been using CPAP machine for over a yr. now and I have seen no improvement in my sleep. I use the nose pillow mask because of me being a side sleeper but I find me waking up with my mouth open and sometimes there is drool. Should I try a full mask to see if that would be any better for me?
Avatar n tn I have used CPAP for 2-3 months, there appears to be little benefit, I switched from APAP?, the automated pressure version, to a constant 12 with the machine releasing pressure when breathing out (C-flex), this was with a Respitronics machine.
Avatar n tn You know, my husband also has a missing bone between sinus and brain. Just a small fragment and no one knows why but it was after sinus surgery when they informed him of this. There is something about the consistency of egg white that separates them. Kind of freaky. Anyway, this is a good question for your doctor. I wouldn't think this should be an issue but you'd want to make sure you have just the right pressure setting for your cpap device.
Avatar n tn I finally convinced my primary care physician to write a prescription for cpap. You need a prescription for a cpap machine since it is a medical device - it is illegal to sell it without one. As someone with undiagnosed UARS, I will tell you that the dental device (TAP, Somnodent) is much better first-line treatment. It took me 3 months to adjust the dental devices to reach the optimum lower jaw advancement setting. I have tried both the cpap and TAP and Somnodent dental devices.
1580703 tn?1651904887 from what I've read CPAP machines are unpleasant and help little
Avatar n tn In most cases this resolves nasal congestion and irritation if it is caused by CPAP. CPAP machines can cause air in the stomach-gas and bloating. Sleeping with head aligned with the body helps. If you want a raised head then the head end of the bed should be raised. Pillows should be kept to the minimum. Lowering the CPAP pressure can help but do not do this without consulting your sleep specialist. Switching over to bilevel pressure or C-Flex may help you too. So ask your specialist about it.
Avatar m tn I've been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. I also have major sinus problems. I've tried the bipap and cpap machines with many different mask and can't find anything I can tolerate. The mask is one thing, but the air being forced causes my sinus problems to increase by stopping up my nose which makes me breathe through my mouth which as everyone knows won't work. Does anyone have issues close to what I have or any other suggestions.
Avatar f tn There are machines and settings for those with higher pressures to help out, particularly with exhalation relief. About the tiredness... Are you using a full face mask? If not, and you are mouth breathing, your treatment will go out your mouth and do you no good. Also, if your pressure setting is not right for you, you could still be having apneas. You could ask your sleep doctor about a test for a couple weeks on a machine that records data at home (if you don't already own one).

Avatar f tn I think a doc who uses this kind of screening prior to surgery would have a very high success rate for correcting the real problem. Unless, of course, they are in cahoots with the CPAP machine producers/sellers? maybe get a "kickback"? any comments or suggestions are highly appreciated.
1555684 tn?1294434646 Many elected surgery over CPAP and ended up STILL needing CPAP. It takes time for the medical community to get a good picture of a new treatment's long term effectiveness. I would consider the device you mention, but not for a very long time. Since weight is not your issue, you could very well have a jaw structure that is more narrow than what allows comfortable breathing once the tissues relax during sleep.
1572585 tn?1309245054 I also have stopped using my CPAP machine for when I use it, it takes about an hour to an hour and a half to fall asleep. I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep unless I take my mask off.. Any ideas or suggestions? Should I go back to a sleep specialist to see if I have something else besides sleep apnea? Thank you in advance for your answers...
Avatar f tn ) It was not delivered until the end of aug but that is too long a story for now. This is what cpap therapy should be. A machine that changes pressure during your sleep as you need it. I can sleep all night.
Avatar m tn Ask for some adjustment in the machine to overcome this. CPAP machines can also cause air in the stomach-gas and bloating. Lowering the CPAP pressure can help but do not do this without consulting your sleep specialist. Switching over to bilevel pressure or C-Flex may help you too. However, nothing should be tried without consulting the specialist. If nausea is not related to CPAP machine, then other causes will have to be looked into. Commonest cause of nausea is acidity.
Avatar f tn My c-pap machine is a REMstarAUTO with A-Flex. It's a very good machine. I took the model with the humidifier because they air in winter is to dry not to have it. My only problem is that I have a nasal mask only and I should have get two! One nasal and a full face for when I have sinus infections (which is often with me!). I tried both but I prefer the nasal one. If you have a the chance ask if you can try diferent kind of mask before you make your choice.
Avatar n tn My Mother has had a cpap machine for about a year now. About a month ago she started having allergy like symptoms. She wakes up with watery eyes causing her face to be wet. She has sneezing fits (always like 7 sneezes in a row). Coughs alot. She has atrial fibrillation continuously. No one has been able to get it controlled. She has a medtronic pacer, has had multiple ablations, cannot tolerate amiodarone or other drugs, norpace stopped working. She is short of breath and has no energy.
