Common Questions and Answers about Cpap copd

cpap

Avatar f tn I am 64 with copd and sleep apnea also. I use a cpap at night with 2 liters oxygen. I use several inhalers. The cpap is designed to push the air in your lungs to keep you from dieing when you stop breathing in your sleep. It also makes your lungs stronger because it forces them to work on a deeper level. How long have you been using a cpap? Do you get along with it ok? I have had mine since November.
1611319 tn?1378618399 I am wondering if CPAP or Oxygen level is making me worse? or has CPAP played a part in the cause from the beginning. My Respiratory Doctor is also an ER doctor and has not been in his office, I have to wait till June 4th for resluts and a Game Plane! I have considered going to ER just to see him. Or City is short on these doctors and one has been having health issues himself and is out. So I cannot go to another. These are my most recent labs including thyroid stuff.
Avatar m tn Husband has COPD & uses oxygen 24/7. He has an oxygen concentrator & also uses a CPAP. Recently on just the oxygen his readings are in the low 70's & he can hardly do anything without being extremely out of breath. If he uses the oxygen with the CPAP his readings go into the low 90's. trying to understand why the big difference.
586101 tn?1239680323 As far as I know, I'm not aware of any studies linking all three. But one thing that obstructive sleep apnea can do is to aggravate almost every other condition. Sleep apnea causes a chronic low-grade stress response, which can definitely affect your immune system. It's also been shown that if you have sleep apnea, the vacuum forces that are created can suck up normal stomach juices into your throat, which can in small amounts go into your lungs and sinuses, causing inflammation.
1086884 tn?1328640455 What really gets to me is the lack of energy. I used to be so active and now I have to rest between activities. I have to do everything in stages. I am on oxygen during the night with my cpap. I am doing better with the meds, but my breathing is hard at times. I don't know how I am supposed to feel physically which is also a concern. I feel so much different now than I did before I got sick. Can anyone give me some wisdom? Thank you.
Avatar f tn I have COPD and CHF and had a stent put in two year's ago and found out it is now 60% blocked. I am concerned because I had been told because of COPD, not a candidate for surgery. So, my question is can they put another stent in or what or the possibilities now?
Avatar m tn Hello, I'm 67 and was diagnosed with Emphasema in Oct 2008. I quit smoking in Nov of 1995 and really was shocked to find that quitting apparently didn't stop the development of COPD. I may have had it quite awhile since I have been asthmatic since early childhood. When I was diagnosed the nurse who tested me said I had 50% lung capacity. I'm not sure what that really meant and my doctor is one of those that you have to chain to the chair for any answers.
Avatar f tn I am a non smoker, 50yo and just got diagnosed (2010) with a copd at the mild stage that I believe I got from our home central air conditioner/furnance through filters that were not changed for 2 1/2 years( from 2004-2006). First started having symptoms of my COPD about 2 years after the exposure (2008). though I tested normal on my spirometer, i was found to have lung volumes showing air trapping and a mildly reduced diffusion capacity.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm new to this forum and hoping to get some more information about COPD and asthma. First a little bit of history. I'm a 30yr. old female diagnosed with asthma in February 2009. Since then, I have been in the hospital 6 times each of which usually lasted for 6-8 days. I have been a full time smoker since the age of 14 but have been smoking since age 11. I have smoked 1.5 to 2 packs a day for the last 15yrs.
Avatar f tn to tell the lungs to breathe or when CPAP pressure is too high. An overnight oximetry at home w/your current CPAP and settings are indicated and can be scripted by your doctor. The recommendation is that the at-home overnight oximetry be done w/02 supplementation to your CPAP. Insufficient sleep time during your overnight PSG could well have skewed the results of your multiple sleep latency test (MSLT).
1580085 tn?1400940838 i had explained how i couldnt walk fast or climb stairs etc, as i felt i wasnt getting enough air, it felt like i was trying to walk in treacle, i was just given an inhaler, which is no help, now its getting much worse, and i have to sleep propped up, i am in the uk(england), and i havent been offered any treatment , or advice to help me in any way, they just dont seem to bother with it, just tell us what it is, my mother died last year with asthma and copd, i just wondered if anyone has any ti
5265383 tn?1669040108 Chest x-ray showed prominence of bronchovascular markings consistent with airway inflammatory disease and COPD in appropriate clinical setting. I've never smoked and have always been careful with masks etc. It also showed an ectatic aorta. Everything else normal. Last chest x-ray I had only showed a small area of pneumonia (2009?) -- everything else normal.
Avatar f tn Ive had a really bad week this week im 53 severe copd(empysema) not on oxygen, this past couple of weeks I can feel my lungs pressing on my ribs I have been told my lungs are enlarged, but they feel so uncomfortable its like a dull weight also in the centre of my chest then dull around the bottom, my breathing is not very good at present, does anyone know how i can help myself is it mucus collected that i can feel, please help if you can. thanks.
Avatar f tn I was told back in 1998 that I had the beginning stage of emphysema with cronic bronchitis that I needed to stop smoking (I smoked 2-3 packs a day for 28 yrs)so I stop smoking for 5yrs until my daughter was hurt(broke her back) and she was smoking all the time and I started up again now I am smoking 2 packs a day again,in Sept of this yr went to the doctor with chest pains, bad cough/wheezing,shortness of breath he said I had COPD sent me to a lung doctor that took CT Scan breathing test and all
1114793 tn?1258730647 My husband saw his sleep disorders doctor (he has chronic-obstructive sleep apnea and is on CPAP therapy) who also happens to be a respirologist. My husband told her about the COPD, and she looked at his medical history and was adamant that he did not have it. She said that sometimes COPD and asthma can be confused, and it might be that he simply did not respond to the steroid (or whatever it was) that they had him inhale during the pulmonary function test.
Avatar f tn https://www.webmd.com/lung/copd/10-faqs-about-living-with-copd#1. There are medications/inhalers that make it much better for many. Typically, blood clots in the lungs are very serious and considered a medical emergency. A pulmonary embolism can be fatal. Were you hospitalized for this? https://www.webmd.com/lung/what-is-a-pulmonary-embolism. Are you now on blood thinners? That's a usual course of action with pulmonary embolisms.
Avatar m tn so its like lung and heart problem together eventually... need oxygen to kkeep body going strong... for me, I was severe on both copd and PAH..... and still here to talk about it... Healthy lifestyle is a must... and at least walk half hour a day... I also have CHF (congested heart failure) and so far so good. good luck . Be your own advocate.... I am.... research meds etc learn.
Avatar n tn If you have sleep apnea, your O2 level will usually fall because of obstruction of the airways. If that is the case, doctors often prescribe CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) that will keep the airway open preventing obstruction thus keeping the O2 levels normal. If it isn't sleep apnea and the low O2 levels is related to lung/heart disease, the doc might prescribe O2 to wear at night to keep you sufficiently oxygenated. So..
Avatar f tn I had a sleep study that showed hypoventilation and elevated CO2. I was given a CPAP but am unable to tolerate it even after different masks etc. I do have a lot of shortness of breath with exertion and experience a lot of air hunger at night. Sometimes I have to get up in the middle of the night to try and relieve the air hunger and shortness of breath. The results are as follows: No mediastinal, hilar or axillary adenopathy. left infrahilar calcified lymph node is seen.
Avatar f tn ve found that using a fully data capable CPAP, one that allows ME to access my therapy data each morning encourages me to continue w/CPAP therapy even when I am having difficulties as the data helps to point out what the difficulties are - most often just too high a leak rate. I've used and been happiest w/the Resmed S8 Elite, then the Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage and then the Resmed S8 VPAP Auto when I needed to be switched to a bi-level PAP due to my COPD.
1580703 tn?1651904887 if you have not had a sleep study, ask your doctor about that; you may benefit from a therapy called CPAP
Avatar n tn Is it some type of chronic lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or is it due to sleep apnea, where your breathing stops during sleep sometimes for long periods of time. The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea and a much less common form is central sleep apnea. I suggest that you contact your doctor and ask him/her what is the cause of your abnormal oxygen level? It is unlikely that oxygen, alone, will be the optimum treatment.
