Common Questions and Answers about Coughing variant asthma

Avatar f tn I can appreciate your doubt regarding the diagnosis of cough variant asthma but what you describe is consistent with that diagnosis and, in that circumstance, you might well benefit from anti-asthma drugs. That your Mom hears the wheezing suggests that it may be originating in your throat, rather than your lungs.
Avatar n tn If unrelated, you could have cough variant asthma or could have an infectious cause of cough, such as pertussis, commonly called whooping cough. In any event, examination by the ENT should be the starting point. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Ask your Doctor about "cough variant asthma" then see if he will give you a prescription for prdizone. After years of coughing I was finally diagnoised and this is what stops it.
Avatar f tn Hello Everyone, I was diagnosed many years ago with Cough Variant Asthma by two different pulmonologists. They had me on Advair, singulair, rescue inhalers,... as well as trying prednisone. After a year of using all these meds religiously without ANY relief from my constant coughing,...I stopped taking the meds. I also had a bronchoscopy during that time, and no other condition was found. The odd thing was that I had 2 full weeks of NO coughing after the bronchoscopy;...
1386655 tn?1452097056 m trying to find out more information about the cough I have had for several years now. I was told it was a cough variant asthma. I use singulair, advair, occasionally zrtec, nasal spray, cough medicine. When it is more out of control than usual, I get a shot. Honestly not sure what the heck is in the shot. My biggest problem is with all of this I never get any relief. I already go to a pulmonary specialist, been to asthma drs, I do not have acid reflux/gerd either.
Avatar f tn If nothing turns up, you should ask your PCP about the treatment of what is called cough variant asthma. If the cough persists, despite the asthma therapy, you and your doctor might want to consider referral to a Cough Clinic. Most University Medical Centers have such clinics staffed by physicians adept at diagnosing the cause of chronic cough.
Avatar n tn Diagnosed by the use of a methacholine challenge test which can amplify abnormalities on spirometry thus allowing the physician to uncover signs of asthma. Cough-variant asthma is usually a milder form of asthma and responds very well to traditional asthma medications. Gastroesophageal reflux can be diagnosed by a test called a 24-hour pH probe, endoscopy, or by improvement in the cough with a trial of antireflux medications. Other cause is post nasal drip caused by sinusitis.
Avatar n tn Do you clear your throat a lot? Or feel like something is stuck in your throat? That's post nasal drip. A dry cough can be induced by asthma, GERD and post nasal drip. For some people, they don't have any of the typical symptoms of reflux disease, rather they have a dry cough as their only symptom. Apparently it's the bodies way of protecting itself from the acidic contents that have made it's way into the esophagus.
Avatar m tn It could be mild cough-variant asthma or reactive airways. If it is mild you might be a methacholine challange test to see how hypersensitive your airways are. That is how I was diagnosed with asthma except mine is also due to allergies so it was year round. Try drinking a hot beverage with caffeine in it, helps me greatly. Keep up with the steam since dry air can also be a trigger.
Avatar m tn I am very concerned as my husband is too and to add to this, when she had the flu her cough was awful(per her Dr. not asthma) another Dr. had said she had cough variant asthma her DR now says that is really not the case. My husband has asthma and he even says her cough sounds just like mine. We are at a loss and are about to go out of Kaiser to get some answers. I thought maybe she is allergic to something she is eating etc.
Avatar f tn Hello, there is an entity called Cough-variant asthma. It’s usually a dry, hacking cough that may worsen following exercise, talking, laughing or crying. It is not usually associated with wheezing or shortness of breath. But you can have tightness In the chest. Pulmonary function tests may be normal or reveal a mild obstructive pattern. When pulmonary function tests are normal, a positive methacholine challenge helps support the diagnosis of asthma.
Avatar n tn I have been using Combivent for about a month together with Asmanex to treat my cough-variant asthma and have had pretty good results. However, the first inhalation of Combivent always triggers a major coughing spell (sometimes it's so severe I almost vomit or my ribs hurt). Are there other bronchodilators that might be easier to inhale and still be effective? Or would using a nebulizer help? I've heard there can be adverse side effects with a nebulizer.
Avatar n tn Anyone have or had these symptoms: Awful gagging cough, worse in winter but ongoing for weeks/months, seems okay while eating and drinking but then sometime after and even in between meals is incapacitating. NO COUGHING AT ALL AT NIGHT which is the most restful time for me ... in fact lying down and not talking is peaceful as well. I've seen more doctors for this in the past 2 years then in my entire lifetime of 45!
Avatar m tn I think they test for asthma using pre and post bronchodilator performance on breathing tests. If this was clear then it is probably not asthma.... though of course it could still be asthma if it is exacerbated by a certain trigger.
Avatar n tn The information you have provided is consistent with the diagnosis of asthma, as your doctors have suggested, and I suspect it may well be the cause of your cough, despite your disclaimer, “we all know our own bodies and that asthma hay fever and eczema all come under the same umbrella, and I don’t and have never had them” That you have not had asthma, in the past, does not exclude the possibility that you have it now.
Avatar f tn The form of asthma, however, was unlike classic atopic asthma, being of late onset without airflow obstruction (cough-variant asthma) [2], or even without bronchial hyperresponsiveness (eosinophilic bronchitis) [3]. The diagnosis of postnasal drip syndrome was inferred by the reduction in cough on treatment with first-generation antihistamines [4] rather than by any objective assessment.
Avatar f tn At the beginning of the month I got the upper respiratory virus that was going around so did the kids. all three of the kids stopped the coughing withing a week (so did the co-workers) I have asthma but I cannot get rid of the productive cough.
Avatar m tn Your test values are consistent with the diagnosis of asthma as is your cough. With so-called cough-variant asthma, routine PFT’s may actually be within the normal range. A Methacholine challenge might be helpful in establishing the diagnosis.
Avatar n tn Forget to mention - he mentioned this might be cough variant asthma so we tried albuterol and it doesn't help the cough. Any ideas what I can ask the doctors to check or what it could be?
Avatar n tn I am constantly coughing. People know when I am around just by hearing my cough. I do it so often, I have become used to it and carry on as if it is normal but I know that it isn't. I am fine for a while and suddenly I have to cough. Sometimes the cough turns into a fit and makes me feel like throwing up. Sometimes my eyes water, throat itches and it simply wears me out. I am convinced that I am suffering from allergies but my doctor wants to be sure that my lungs are ok.
Avatar n tn I have been coughing for about 7 years. I have been to 3 doctors and been on meds for post nasal drip, asthma. I had my thyroid out in Oct; because it was enlarged and closing up my trachia but that didn't help. Have had xrays and cat scans and everything looks good. It seems to coming from my throat area. sometimes i cough so hard that i almost pass out. I'm really at wits end. Any suggestions?
634733 tn?1316625992 Another reason for coughing like you describe is Cough-Variant Asthma. Instead of being classically short of breath and wheezing, you just cough and cough. The diagnosis of C-V asthma is often made empirically by treating with a bronchodilator - usually just an inhaler or nebulizer. Asthma can begin at any age and it can be the result of a severe lung inflammation.
213398 tn?1202670474 i understand now that this may be a normal variant. just curious though how is it determined whether its a normal variant or indicative of an ischemia?
Avatar m tn I think it's possible, if you're coughing a lot or just had an attack. The asthma itself shouldn't be causing a stomach ache, though, because asthma is in the lungs. Is it possible that you have allergies that could cause the stomachaches? My little sister has asthma, GERD, a casien allergy, and a whey allergy. Her allergist told us it's really common for someone with asthma to have other allergeries and things like that. Hope this helps!
