I have a cold, am not a smoker but am coughing up blood in my phlegm.
Is the blood seen when coughing up phlegm and mixed with saliva? Do you have any bad teeth or gums, that could be the cause of it? If it's mixed with phlegm and you see blood, you should definitely go to your doctor ASAP (which you should do anyways with the gastric issues going on). If it's not associated with coughing, it is most likely related to teeth or gum issues and you should get seen by your dentist.
I am 50 yrs old I have never smoked but for the past two years I keep getting really bad chest infections the doctor put me on inhalers and said I suffered from asthma, every morning I cough up phlegm and my chest feels tight when I spit out the phlegm its brown in colur like its got blood in it after I rince my mouth this stops until the next morning.
but the second day, i had blood stained phlegm in the morning and all the days whenever i spit the phlegm ( without coughing it out)....so...
may i asked wat is my problem? My mum just said that wait a few more days n see whether the phlegm goes off...oh ya, i slept in an air-con room, is this a factor causing me having blood in phlegm untill now?? By the way, i am just 17 year old..=(

Hello. I've recently had a cold and lately I've noticed that every morning when I spit out some phlegm there are streaks of blood in it. When I started coughing, it wasn't there then but after a few days of coughing really heavily it started. It only happens in the mornings though after waking up. No blood comes up the rest of the day no matter how much I cough. It's been going on four about... I don't know, 2 to 4 days now.
Yesterday I was laying in bed and felt phlegm come up my throat and when I spit it out, it was a prefectly spherical black ball shaped sac and the phlegm was all pitch black. The sac was about the size of a blueberry and it felt like it was made of skin or flesh. It was fully intact but with a hole where more black liquid squeezed out from. Not sure if this is related, but I have also been having headaches above my right eye for weeks.

(I smoke about 8-10 a day).Yesterday I did a huge cough and spat the resulting phlegm in the sink. It had blood in it. Not a large amount about 5p/dime size. The actual phlegm was clearish with a green/grey tinge. The blood was bright red. Needles to say, after reading everything online I am now scared witless! I am going to speak to my GP tomorrow. It has not happened since. Has this happened to anyone else and it be nothing scarey?

been coughing for a couple of weeks little bit of fever very tired went to a walk in clinic a couple of days ago and the Doctor said it was mostly allergies gave me antibotics,congestion,cough syurp,nasal spray....this morning when I woke up I was coughing up blood in my phlegm the first 3 times then it cleared up....
Don't discount acid reflux as the culprit, or underlying problem. I have acid reflux and if it goes untreated, or gets out of control, I have allot coughing and cough up phlegm. It's usually milky, to yellow in color and it can be thick. It wouldn't hurt to try an over the counter drug, like . You don't have to have heartburn symptoms, to be suffering from acid reflux. Anyway, rust colored phlegm could be the result of old blood down in the lungs if you are coughing it up. Typically it is nothing to worry about but once in a blue moon it could be tuberculosis which requires medical attention. Doubtful that you have TB but you could check with your doctor to be on the safe side.
For phlegm and mucous, it helps to double your intake of liquid to keep it loose and flowing. Try not to use a cough suppressent as it is better to have it moving.
I had told dr I had been coughing up blood for several days and they asked if it was streaked and I said yes. I saw a description on a web page using the description of looking like a partially scrambled egg and that is what it really looked like, not really streaked but kind of mixed. Now I have been on 500 mg Cipro for 4 of 7 days prescribed but still am coughing up same type of blood mixture. Am I just not allowing the medicine to work long enough or should I be contacting my doctor?
I am at work and started coughing, I realized that I started to taste blood, and when I spit what I could into a paper towel after coughing some more, I discovered that the phlegm or spit was actually pink. Im 17 year old female, I currently have a blocked nose and sore throat common symptoms of a cold. It has been 5 days now and i still have it. I have been coughing up phlegm and only twice has it happened where i have coughed up phlegm with streaks of blood in it. I do not smoke, take drugs or drink. Can you help me?
I hacked up a real thick sample that was directly from my throat, and spit it out onto a tissue. I noticed a streak of blood on the tissue mixed with yellow phlegm. I continued to try to bring phlegm up, and didn’t notice the blood anymore. Then, about an hour later, I once again brought up a real thick sample from deep within and there was a smaller bit of blood (I had to inspect the tissue very closely to identify it).
I have been smoking cigarettes and marijuana for a little over three years. I also smoked liquid pcp for about a year and a half, with a 6month break from all three when i went to rehab from nov08 to june09.. when i got out in june i started smoking pcp and weed again until i stopped about two weeks ago.. i still smoke cigarettes.
It seems to come in waves of coughing spells and then no coughs. I have been coughing up phlegm that is mostly white/clear with small amounts of a yellowish color and small brown flecks. When I lay down I can hear myself breathing/wheezing and makes it impossible to sleep, not to mention coughing fits making my partner unable to sleep. I have been taking antihistamines before bed and it seems to help calm my cough.

First two days I was coughing up loads of phlegm, yesterday and today my nose has become completely plugged but little phlegm is coming up, just a harsh weesey cough that I can not stop. The coughing is causing pain to my ribs. I am 24 weeks pregnant, have only had my temperature go up 1 degree. Should I go see a doctor? I am with a midwife so she can not help with other medical issues outside of pregnancy.
m really worried but not just over what it might be, but i have alot of panic and anxiety issues and i get panic attacks when i have to see anyone and leave the house, which is why i'm panicing so much about seeing a doctor.
What do you think it could be? My boyfriend thinks it's because i'm always coughing to clear my throat, i dont do a deep cough though, just enough to clear my throat and spit it out.
