About a month ago my dog was throwing up stomach bile like once or twice a week, then it stopped for a while. I tried to get my mom to take her to the vet but she didn't think it was anything to worry about. Lately she's been puking up nothing, like she dry-heaves and makes a coughing noise as she does it. But she's still her normal-self, hyper and energetic. She vomited today and there was blood in it, even though it was barely noticeable. Is this serious?

My tiny four pound Maltese/Poodle cross has been coughing and I was wondering if someone has any ideas. He is about 8 1/2 and has had issues with his behavoir. He won't let us have him groomed without him trying to bite us or get his nails trimmed, so every four months or so we have to have him knocked out to have this done. I wasn't sure if this was some of his problem from the stuff they give him or what, but he does it alot especially at night.

While it seemed to improve his blood sugar(I tested his blood), he had periods of excitement and heavy panting for hours. I was concerned about heart attack and I cut his dosage to 5mg three times a day, then 2. After a month of so, he started to develop a severe cough. Dry, but with almost every breath. This continues today, after 4 months. Out of desperation, I cut medicines out completely after dropping the dosage slowly for a week.

Was your dog vaccinated for kennel cough within the last six months? Next question: When was your dog's last heartworm test? This blood test should be run annually on all dogs. Is your dog on heartworm preventive? When was the last dose that you gave? It is not possible that she contracted heartworms from the kennel. It sounds like your vet has your dog on all the "correct" heart medications. The addition of pimobendan should help. Depending on the severity, a heart ultrasound is definitely warranted, and twice a year x-rays of the chest and kidney tests should be done too (more frequently if there is a problem).

I have a 12yr old yellow lab and over the last few months she got a really bad cough. the vet said it was not the worse that he has seen but he said there wasnt' anything we could do about it. Dear Pug Dad, On about Page 4 is a post entitled, "My dog has been coughing for..." and it's an old post. HIS dog, it turns out, did eat some burrs that got caught in his fur... and MY dog has been coughing and he also ate some burrs. Since it was an old post, he did not come back about it.

My dog is constantly licking his paws and body. Every time he does this he hacks and coughs like he has a hairball in his throat. He has recurring skin problems that present as scabby, slightly smelly places on his back, left side, stomach and chest. I have combed/brushed these areas and hair always comes out with the scab. I give him Brewers Yeast w/garlic every day in his food. He gets glucosamine (sp) twice a day.

My male chow dog was 4 maybe 5 years old and died this morning . He was coughing up blood and peeing blood and was weak and breathing heavy and fast . But he didnt start this until recently and it was too late to do anything .How did my dog die ?

As for the heart murmur, the treatment depends on exactly what type of heart defect is causing the murmur. Since your vet predicted that the dog would start coughing, and the dog has in fact started coughing, I take it that it is not a benign murmur. In my nonprofessional opinion, most likely the murmur is due to valve disease, and the cough is a symptom of congestive heart failure.
