My 8 year old cat recently started coughing, not the ususal hair ball stuff, and I can hear him breath. His lung sound "wet" . I started giving him some over the counter hairball remedy and think he may have aspirated some liquid. Today is Sunday. My vet is not open today but will take him to emergency if I have to. He is drinking and eating, his gums are pink. Should I go to emergency?

t know that coughing is NOT NORMAL till i took him and found out he had pneumonia. What I was told is unless your cat is coughing up a hairball, coughing is not normal; and the impaired breathing definitely sounds like something is not right-please bring your cat to the vet right away.

Please know that coughing (unles it's a hairball) or panting is NOT ok in your cat. We had an upper resp, virus go through our house and 2 cats were fine. The 3rd I thought had mucus in his throat or trouble breathing due to stuffy nose like the rest and didn't realise his distress till he coughed up a frightening gob of green phlegm. I have been coughing for about 7 years. I have been to 3 doctors and been on meds for post nasal drip, asthma. I had my thyroid out in Oct; because it was enlarged and closing up my trachia but that didn't help. Have had xrays and cat scans and everything looks good. At the shelter they told me to watch for kennel cough. She is sneezing and coughing. Today I noticed a runny eye, and she seems unactive (especially for a kitten). My cat has a fluid pocket under his chin that keeps refilling when drained. We have drained it twice now about a week apart. It has no odor and is clear, mucus type fluid. Hi! I have a male cat who is about 7 years old. He is fixed, and weighs about 13 lbs. He was fine literally two days ago. Yesterday, however, he spend the entire day coughing. He spent yesterday (and is currently) laying by the heater. He is not coughing nearly as much today, I have only heard him once. He is eating, drinking, and playing like normal. He does seem to be breathing harder than normal, though it does not appear as if he is struggling or gasping for air.

That was about 6 months ago. Since then the coughing as not gotten much better, or worse, but I still am coughing an abnormal amount.
