If there is a lot of blood, not just blood flecked mucous she needs to go to the hosipital. A doctor is really is the best to tell you what is going on with her. Take care.

My boyfriend, who is 21 years old, has a chronic cough, sometimes accompanied by thick mucous. This morning he coughed up a large amount of mucous with a little blood in it. The sputum is very sticky and looks like a giant glob of petroleum jelly - he says this is normal, but my own sputum (which only occurs when I am sick) is not so thick or gel-like. He said that his throat and chest felt better after coughing up the mucous.

However, I then started coughing up some stuff, and it was all brownish blood mixed with mucous. I coughed several times, and each time it was dark blood with mucous. Once, It was a rather long piece, with a round bigger piece at one end. I could feel it come up out of my throat area.

If it was alot and with coughing, mention it to your doc. I also get streaks in my mucous from an irritated throat (from coughing excessively due to a cold etc..).I always say this though, if in doubt, always talk to your doctor.

Is there blood in the mucous? Discolored mucous may mean pneumonia or bronchitis. Bloody mucous may mean a blood clot in the lung. Huge risk factors for a lung clot are: diabetic, smoker, overweight, drug abuse. My advice is to not wait and to see your doctor or go to the ER with very much haste! Have you tried an over the counter EXPECTORANT? Is your mucous clear or colored? Yellow or green mucous indicates a problem, unless you are a smoker... Chemicals in cigarettes cause a yellow brown tint to mucous. If this is persistent, SEE AN ENT EARS NOSE THROAT DOCTOR. They may order a chest xray or CT and should do a culture and sensitivity of your sputum. All of this testing should give you an answer. So make an appt with ENT doctor right away to make sure its not something serious.

if the blood is in your throat, it can be that at night as you're lying flat on your back the mucous is pooling in your throat. Maybe the blood is coming from your throat? You know, before I had my sinus surgery, I had a lot of mucous coming out of my nose and going down the back of my throat. I was dx a few months back. Take advair twice a day (was taking singulair too, but it gave me a headache) & take aciphex daily for gerd. the aciphex has helped w/ the coughing some, but i still cough a good bit...sometimes to the point of dizziness. If I laugh, I cough. Any suggestions?

Have you lost Blood mucous plug ? As water can leak only after that cervix is blocked by that plug till the labor starts. I am 38 weeks and 3 days aswel and this is my second baby Just keep an eye on your pad and wait for contractions!!! Best of luck!!

The very last 2 days of the Moxifloxacin course, my mucous finally turned pale. I'm still coughing up very pale yellow and clear sputum as opposed to the solid yellow stuff I'd had before. Pale yellow, almost clear is ok, right? A friend of mine said she was coughing up clear mucous for 2-3 months. However, when I use my CPAP large amounts of mucous will build up in my throat, blocking my airway. I wake up choking. The mucous is yellow with streaks of blood in it. The pulmonary sleep specialists do not know what causes the mucous to fill up my airways. I do have esphogeal dymotility (cause undetermined) and no gag reflex. The best they can determine is whatever is affecting my swallowing may be causing this problem.

I am on Protonix, I do not smoke, I gave up coffee and many acid producing foods. The mucous is too thick to swallow and I many times get sick when I am coughing to expel it, which is probably injuring my esophagus even further.
