Copaxone mechanism of action

Common Questions and Answers about Copaxone mechanism of action

copaxone

Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar f tn I'm also on Copaxone and haven't heard of this being a possible side effect. I'll be curious if anyone has any input. I've noticed the same thing lately too. I also sometimes can't swallow when I need to and I have to really focus and force myself to do it. It can be pretty scary at times.
1678656 tn?1369233818 HI, the reaction you had is considered a side effect of Copaxone and as long as it dissipates within 15 or 20 minutes there is no need to worry. Several members on here have experienced this reaction. Hopefully they will pop up and share their experiences with this. I know Jensequitur and HVAC have both experienced this. You were right in calling the nurse for advice.
2063887 tn?1337829746 I finally figured out that the Copaxone was causing me to have severe migraines so we had to change our plan of action. They wanted me to decide which way to go, but sort of led the discussion towards Tysabri. My original neurologist wanted to start with that as well, but after appealing to the insurance several times they wouldn't approve it. This doctor actually took the time to talk and write down facts about my situation to back up the need.

Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of CampralĀ® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
382218 tn?1341181487 Thanks for posting this DV. My favorite part was the mechanism of action for Tecfidera. "Poorly understood...
Avatar f tn I think the best course of action is probably to have a think about what will work best with your lifestyle and personal preferences and then discuss it with your neurologist in terms of what will be most likely to succeed where Copaxone did not. Also, remember that ALL disease-modifying drugs play the long game. They do not treat symptoms. They do not fix old damage. Their goal is to reduce the number of relapses and hopefully slow down disease progression over time. Hope this is helpful!
Avatar m tn What is important is whether the antibodies block or neutralize the biologic action of the med that is important. So what your doc is planning makes a lots of sense. Keep us posted. I find it amazing how many of us have swallowing difficulties. Coordination of the swallow is governed by the cranial nerves and MS can hit the cranial nerves hard.
Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
1713150 tn?1314467342 t quite sure why copaxone works, but it does. It is made up of amino acids, all of which occur naturally in our body. I hope I've got this all right- if not, I'm sure someone will correct me. The interferons and copaxone all have similar effective rates. I hope the rebif is doing good things for you.
1936411 tn?1333831849 Welcome Jane! I have been on copaxone for about 16 months now and have had no major problems. Read the literature that comes with the meds and all the info that your neuro should have given you on the different dmds out there. The problem for me initally wasnt finding info it was reading through it all. As for tricks of the trade, there are many depending on your body's reaction to the copaxone.
Avatar n tn These amino acids are normally found in the human body. To the best of my knowledge, there is no causal link to Copaxone causing cancer. There are a certain number of patients that develop cancer and report it while taking Copaxone, but I believe that is statistically equivalent to the incidence of cancer in the general population. Because it was reported, it will be listed in the prescribing information, but that does not mean that Copaxone causes cancer.
Avatar m tn HIV is transmitted by; Unprotected penetrative anal and/or vaginal sex Sharing works with other IV drug users Mother to child You never had an exposure.
382218 tn?1341181487 I sought your advice on Novantrone, as my neuro had stated that this would be the next course of action, if Rebif is unsuccessful for me after a further period of labs and re-introduction to the med. I had asked him if I could try Copaxone after Rebif, and he was very specific about expressing concern about my active MS course and not wanting to take more time to wait and see if Copaxone would work for me, meanwhile more neurological damage may be occuring.
Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar f tn No daily injections (a constant reminder that I have MS and I have to treat it), the reminants of the syringe in my house, in my fridge, sharps bin in my press. Filling the prescription at the pharmacy. These were all things I wanted to banish as a mechanism to think about having MS a little less.
Avatar f tn s neuro considered Copaxone the weakest DMD, or what weakest means. It is a competely different drug from the other 3 DMDs, and its mechanism of action is different. Also, Rebif and Avonex are exactly the same drug, Interferon Beta-1a. Betaseron is similar but it is a little different, Interferon Beta-1b. I'm no doctor, so I can't explain all the differences, but its different formulation may be one reason for its higher rate of NABs.
Avatar m tn http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578705 Ribavirin improves early responses to peginterferon through improved interferon signaling. Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
1373769 tn?1278603610 Also I forgot to ask my neuro which type of MS I have - would you assume it is RRMS since she is putting me on copaxone? I remember her saying this med would be good because of the number of lesions I currently have and because there are fewer side effects than others. I was in such a daze during that dx appointment I didn't think to ask. thanks so much!
Avatar f tn I stopped taking Copaxone not because of the IPIR, but because of the allergic reactions that seemed to accompany it. My skin started itching severely, and I had some swelling in my face. So I switched to Betaseron. Fortunately I don't get the flu-like reaction, or at least not as bad as some people.
Avatar m tn Seeing an orthodontist is advised.
Avatar f tn Be careful of some of the information in these postings. Copaxone does not suppress the immune system. Nor are any of the MS DMDs immunosuppresants. In the case of Copaxone, it is believed that it acts as a decoy for the myelin protein, tricking the immune system away from attacking the myelin sheath.
