Common Questions and Answers about Colon polyps cancer risk

colon

Avatar n tn removed 5 polyps, one which was abnormally large. They were sent for bioyopsy. What kind of risk am I for colon cancer? I have severe constipation, bleeding rectally and in stools, bloating most of the time, extremely gasy, and suffer from acid reflux.
Avatar m tn I heard it was uncommon but the surgeon said sometimes they may be missed the first time around. Do I have higher risks of developing colon cancer? I was told as long as I got checkups and had them removed I would be fine and have the polyps controlled.
1506428 tn?1290113504 Its not cancer!! Whoo! Big sigh of relief! However, my colon was so inflamed that i had increased my risk of developing polyps and cancer. I've been put on prednisone steroids(ewww!) and i have to meet with my doctor about my future medications and how to better address this disease. (possibly surgery but I'll deal when the time comes). I just thought i should share my good news!
533880 tn?1237612452 I have a question with all these issues does these things increase my risk of colon or stomach cancer. My grandmother died a month ago due to colon and lover cancer. And my dad has also had a few polyps removed from his colon. What are some things I should be aware of just in case.
Avatar m tn There are studies to show that there is a slight chance of increased risk of colon cancer after gall bladder removal. However, the risk of colon cancer can be prevented by avoiding processed red meat, limiting red meat to no more than 12-18 ounces per week, eating plenty of fiber-rich foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn You found a polyp ON you? I'm not really sure what you mean, as most of the polyps I'm familiar with grow from mucous membranes and not externally. In any case, I highly doubt that whatever you've found has any bearing on your risk for colon cancer. Relax, take a deep breath, and see your doc to talk about your concerns.
Avatar n tn a new study shows that eating three servings of fish per week appears to cut the risk of developing colon polyps that could lead to cancer. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health and Vanderbilt University in Tennessee surveyed more than 5,300 individuals about their eating habits. All of those surveyed also had colonoscopies.
Avatar m tn But as a side finding the doctor found two (6mm and 7mm) sessile serrated polyps in my transverse colon. I am terrified. Does this put at super high risk of colon cancer since I am so young and there were two? She said I should come back in 3 years for another colonoscopy, but I am concerned that I should come back sooner. My paternal grandmother had colon cancer in her 70s and had some of her colon removed and then lived to 86.
Avatar m tn My doctor could not complete the colonscopy due to my long colon. (I have a tortuous colon.) Here is my problem - he saw 3 polyps, but could only reach 1 of them to remove. He wants me to return for another optical colonoscopy, where he will "put me all the way under" (anesthesia), then attempt to remove the other 2 polyps he saw, then attempt to look at the rest of the colon and remove any more polyps. I am scared.
974371 tn?1424653129 Have a friend that is about 82. He had surgery fop or colon cancer about two years ago. He has been on some type of Chemo and oral meds since. Was told on one CAT scan, it was stable. Last CAT scan showed rumors had gotten bigger. I don't have many details. The doctor has stopped the Chemo and Cancer meds. Said he discussed it with some board and no other treatment suggested. I find this hard to believe! Can't they do surgery again to remove the rumors?
Avatar n tn I had my colonoscopy today and he said he found 2 polyps in the sigmoid colon and biopsy a thickened fold in the sigmoid colon. Also said I have Diverticulosis of the sigmoid colon. Does anyone know what this means?
Avatar m tn I had surgery in Feb. 2011 for colon tumer and after biopsy 2nd.stage cancer was detected. Then I had gone trough chemotherapy os six cycle of Folfox 4. After completion of chemotherapy during check up a polyp (2mm) was found in colon. After six months PET scan has been done and no metastat was found. My age is 61 year. I go for walking daily morning for 40 minutes and also busy in my job. My weight is constant. I have no major problem.
Avatar n tn He feels that because of the 6 surgeries that my husband has already had for colon cancer, colon perforation and colon obstructions that his intestine is not functioning properly and it could be caused from nerve damage due to the numerous surgeries. The dr. is now trying him on a regement of Florastor and Aligin to replace the good antibotics in his intestine. I ask the dr. also about Familial Polyposis and he said he did not think that was what my husband had.
Avatar n tn I have a half brother that died from colon cancer. My family has a history of polyps, thus I had my first colonoscopy at 37 (2 polyps) then at 46 (2 polyps) All benign thankfully. I've had complete annual physicals for the past 5 years and all good thankfully. I am due for a colonoscopy and am stressing about more polyps. Also have anxiety and that's flaring up because of the colonoscopy. Should I be concerned? Thank you!

Avatar f tn My mother in law have colon polyps and they checked it its not cancer, they took some off while they did the exam and told her to come and check it after 2 month, when they check it after 2 month they saw more polyps that grow in the colon this time about 8 mm and the other from before was 3 centimetre and they said they cant take it no more because its keep growing, what do you think the cause for that and why it keep growing and what we can do for that?
Avatar n tn d for sure have a relative with adenomas in his/her young age), and goes with dozens of colonic polyps. Yet another type is Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC), increases the risk of colon cancer, often beginning in the 20s and 30s, but does not cause a large number of polyps. http://www.uptodate.com/patients/content/topic.do?
Avatar f tn This is still young for colon cancer...how old is your mom?
Avatar f tn do all polyps turn into cancer? and are there different types of colon polyps?
Avatar f tn ) While waiting for the biopsy results I researched flat polyps and learned that there are special procedures for removing large flat colon polyps. One such procedure is called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). I'm wondering if you had this procedure; I think it would be rare to get bleeding with it if the physician is highly skilled. It seems to be done only at large hospital centers.
Avatar n tn I had a screening colonoscopy in Aug and to confirm a resected polyp was complete an EUS was done in Nov. Resected polyp OK but "multiple 5mm polyps were noted throughout the colon". How unusual is this? Only a couple in Aug and then many in Nov!!
Avatar n tn a total colectomy - has probably been recommended to you as the most favourable option which ought to prevent the onset of colon cancer from the polyps. In other words, if nothing was done then you might develop colon cancer. I suppose that the presence of multiple polyps excludes "snipping them off" during a colonoscopy - easier to cut out the whole section. I underwent a total colectomy for torrential diverticular bleeding five years ago.
Avatar f tn because there are so many polyps she said that some could be missed. and cancer would start. im aware that cancer can start in other areas and polyps could already be higher up, dont know where else they can go.
