Colon cleansing vs laxatives

Common Questions and Answers about Colon cleansing vs laxatives

colon-cleanse

Avatar f tn This is going to be late for you, but you should never take liver cleansers while taking medication. What you're describing is a combination colon/liver cleanse. Milk thistle and yellowdock, for example, are liver cleansers, and could theoretically wash some of the medication out of our system, as the body sees virtually all medication as toxic.
Avatar m tn I think it depends on the type of enema. Using enemas frequently for constipation can cause your rectum to "forget" how to have a bowel movement naturally. Using enemas for "colon cleansing", I believe is not good, because your colon doesn't need any cleansing, it does this itself.
Avatar m tn just a question, I was at GNC today and saw a product for colon or gastro cleansing. Has anyone used these, does it work and is it healty?
1454383 tn?1288947277 If this is the Natural Clean I'm thinking of, it's for cleaning drugs out of your system to pass a drug test, not a colon cleanser. Maximum burn is a scam -- acai berry is, like all berries, high in antioxidants, but it won't help you lose weight. Real colon cleansers are based on fiber such as psyllium and some have laxatives in them, which aren't healthy, such as diet teas.
Avatar n tn If colon cleansing was beneficial, why wouldn’t our doctors order them?
425312 tn?1279966179 In my opinion, the whole colon cleansing thing is a scam. Around 5 years ago I had a colonoscopy done. They put you through a three-day fasting/fluid drinking thing before that. But no enemas or other fluid induction. As they were doing the procedure (it is no big deal by the way), I could see my colon on the TV screen. It was as fresh and clean as a . . . well . . . baby's bottom. So I don't take this stuff about stuff accumulating in your colon seriously anymore.
Avatar m tn THURSDAY, Dec. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Two prescription drugs used to cleanse the bowel before a colonoscopy may cause kidney damage, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday. The FDA said it would now require a black-box warning on the oral sodium phosphate products Visicol and OsmoPrep, alerting consumers about the risk of acute phosphate nephropathy -- a type of severe kidney injury.

Avatar f tn Then my GI doc showed me the discoloration that the laxative did to my colon, this was I believe caused by the laxatives blocking necessary elements in my diet to keep a colon healthy! I did try Amitiza, it does work for me, 8 mcg twice daily. I went off of it due to the cost, and ended up in the hospital.... NOT fun. I am back on Amitiza now, and hoping to be back to normal soon.
Avatar n tn She had taken laxatives for many years and her colon had become almost inactive to the extent that a total colectomy was being considered to solve the problem. I suggest that you ask your doctor whether this may represent an eventual outcome for you if you take laxatives for many years. If so, then perhspa dietray modifications such as plenty of fibre (especially bran) in your diet may forestall the eventuial requirement for more drastic surgery.
Avatar f tn Hi I've been bleeding off and on from my colon for 10 years. I'm 30 and it started when I began to diet and try to lose weight. I was taking many kinds of laxatives at the time too. Through my 20s I struggled with weight and used laxatives and bled much from my colon. It wasn't until recent that I noticed barely no blood in stool but so much blood on toilet paper. So I'm definitely concerned. Do you think this is a sign of colon cancer?
794656 tn?1237171629 Laxative abuse can cause permanent damage to your kidneys, liver and colon function. Because laxatives work on the colon and not the stomach all but 12% of the calories ingested are excreted with laxative use. In addition, laxative abuse can cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalances (causing arrhythmias and heart attack), bloating, gas, severe abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Avatar m tn My doctor prescribed me oral sennosides for 2 weeks because I was having a mild-severe constipation, 2 tablets at night, but then I had to see another doctor who prescribed me with oral sennosides again for a week but now 2 tablets in the morning and 2 at night! So that makes a total of 3 weeks of laxatives use, so I stopped taking them, I've heard that using them for more than a week is dangerous and chronic use leads towards colon motility problems like atrophy.
1754169 tn?1313013058 Can you please tell me more specifically what you mean by a twisted colon. Do you take any laxatives? What dietary changes have you made?

Avatar n tn but they just diagnosed me with a tortuous colon. My next step is to get the colon transit study xrays to see if my colon is working or not. If it is not I might be getting my large intestine removed. I too am looking for feedback on this surgery and if its worth it and if it is better then what I am going through now. The pros and cons etc. Also anyone that has had the surgery have they had issues with sexual intercourse after the surgery?? And what about medications and vitamins?
1378071 tn?1313420821 Has anyone tried the ACIA / COLON cleansing pills, drink whatever.... they say the fat just comes right off?!?! Comeon now... Does that really work, im trying to get opinons before i try it!!!
Avatar f tn A cleansing diet would be rearranging your entire diet, for a short time or forever, to emphasize cleansing toxins out of your colon, liver, and other organs. The reason you read about fasting a lot is that it's the best cleansing diet there is -- you take in no toxins while your body has the opportunity to clean itself out in the meantime. How long to fast is controversial, but when first starting out it's usually recommended to do one day, then move on later to two, etc.
451343 tn?1256250831 t take over night to get myself in this position, all though it sometimes feels like it happened over night. just want to feel normal what ever that is. wondering about colon cleansing. i have some colon cleansing formula. wondering if i should wait to take them or what. i just feel like invasion of the body snatchers. i want my body back. i let those damn pills rob my body of sooooooooooo much. feeling a bit like a failure. im sure that will pass.
Avatar m tn It could really help you. 2) STOP taking laxatives The more laxatives you take, the more it makes your colon lazy. 3) AVOID whole grains A lot of doctors suggest eating whole grains for constipation but it is BAD, especially when your colon isn't healthy. Whole grains act like little knives in your colon so if your colon is irritated, it's just going to irritate it more. STOP eating ALL kind of grains.
1534975 tn?1302372399 Welcome to the gastroenterology community! I really recommend against using enemas on a daily basis. Have you tried other laxatives? Sometimes you need to try different laxatives until you find one that works. Have you seen a gastroenterologist or just your regular doctor?
Avatar f tn   My concern now is that I have become to dependant of this form of unhealth colon.  I also have been treated for anxiety and depression with celexa and ativan for a year.  I have not had alot of exercise over the last year either.  I have been mostly on a weight watchers type diet and have the same thing every day.  I am sure you will agree that I need to get off these laxatives after using them for a long time.  What am I up against and what do you suggest.
Avatar n tn I am stressed. Should I take some laxatives? I eat all bran buds for breakfast every morning. I have lazy bowels. I eat apples, oranges, plums. I dont know what i am doing wrong. I am in alot of pain right now, being backed up with feces. Please help me!!
Avatar n tn I've had chronic constipation for years due to a sluggish colon. I've foolishly dealt with it for the last several years with stimulant laxatives, first with Senakot and now with Dulcolax. Well, the Dulcolax is now beginning to lose its effect. Due to my naturally sluggish colon, I highly doubt I would be able to get my normal function back if I were to quit the laxatives. With that said, does anyone here know how I would go about getting a recommendation for a colostomy?
