Common Questions and Answers about Cold urticaria triggers

cold

Avatar m tn There is a thing called cold urticaria, as well as heat urticaria. Some people get hives in response to too much heat or too much cold, or sometimes other triggers (my grandfather apparently gets it from water--my grandmother jokes he's the only boy allergic to soap and water). I don't think it's at all dangerous, just annoying, and the only thing I know of to do is avoid the trigger.
Avatar m tn My daughter has cold urticaria which came out about 5 years ago. It breaks out in welts when her skin exposes to the cold temperature or water. It now even becomes worse. Does anyone have any suggestions or does anyone else have it that can give some advices??? Are there any treatments which are proven to be effective???
1428403 tn?1283023607 It is important that the triggers are identified to help your wife avoid them. Example of triggers include tight clothing, cold, heat, watches, stress or anything else that could cause stress either to the skin or to the person. Complementary and alternative medicine such as acupuncture may also help. Take care and best regards.

Avatar n tn Looks like you have developed an allergic reaction to cold. Environmental triggers or seasonal or diurnal variations triggers may be difficult to avoid. But being aware can help to avoid the same. The best way to prevent the allergic reaction is to avoid the allergen. Once an attack has occurred, antihistamines are effective to relieve symptoms. Avatar f tn I know the names cold urticaria and cold sore are similar by coincidence and that the cold sores could have originally been caused by the stress of the sudden cold urticaria, but is there any other possible connections between cold sores and cold urticaria or something that could cause both of these? Thank you!
Avatar f tn There are MANY types of Urticaria ALL related to DIFFERENT triggers.
552788 tn?1215141931 Hi, This could be an allergic reaction to your own sweat.Cholinergic urticaria is a subcategory of physical urticaria (aka hives) that is a skin rash brought on by a hypersensitive reaction to body heat.
Avatar n tn Hi, From what you describe you seem to be having cold urticaria or cold hives. Are you allergic to any specific food substances or do you have allergic reactions otherwise? You should consult your doctor for a confirmed diagnosis and a proper clinical evaluation. You should try and avoid exposure to cold and also antihistamine or antiallergic medications would definitely help you. The cold allergies are known to last for variable periods of time in different individuals.
Avatar f tn I've been getting hives for the past year or so. It comes fast and disappears fast. It can occur anywhere on the body, mainly on my arms and back. I often get an outbreak in summer and heat triggers it (eg: I can't go into a spa as my body will have a breakout straight away).
478342 tn?1241369352 Hi, People who have a physical urticaria have a physical trigger for their hives, such as pressure, heat, cold, sunlight, water or exercise. Up to 20 to 30 percent of people with chronic urticaria have a physical cause. Cholinergic or heat urticaria is a form of chronic hives that is caused by an increase in body temperature. Hives are caused by any increase in body temperature, such as hot showers, exercise, spicy foods, or being under too many covers in bed at night.
Avatar n tn I have been suffering from chronic uticeria (hives) for the past 4 months. I have seen my PCP, dermatologist and OBGYN. I have a copper IUD, however everyone tells me this is not the reason for the hives. I have worn a copper ring and have had no reaction. I have had two skin biopyses along with numberous lab tests.Predisone does not help nor does benadryl seem to work. The hives are on my back and torso and are now starting to go down my legs.

Avatar f tn After looking into it, what you have is truly an allergy to cold. Refered to as 'cold urticaria'. With cold urticaria, exposure to cold temperatures causes redness, itching, swelling and hives on your skin. People with cold urticaria should avoid exposure to cold air or water as much as possible. (Source: Mayo Clinic, http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cold-urticaria/DS01160) This completely agrees with everything you have said, and thus proves your cold allergy.
Avatar m tn You may want to look into Urticaria. I have Cold Urticaria, I get hives when I'm exposed to the sudden drop/change in temperature....(going from a warm environment to cold). I also break out when my cieling fan is on and it blows cool air. I went to an allergist who tested me for many things but she said I wasn't really allergic to anything other than bed bugs, mold and pollen. I thought "Who isn't", but she said most likely it's Idiopathic Cold Urticaria.
Avatar n tn Symptoms follow any stimulus to sweat such as exercise (sometimes called exercise-induced urticaria), heat from the sun (which could also indicate solar urticaria), saunas, hot showers (reaction to water can also indicate water urticaria), spicy foods which may cause an increase in body temperature or even stress due to blushing or anger. Some people only have symptoms during the winter months where their body temperature rises when it is unacclimatized to heat.
