Common Questions and Answers about Clonidine in alcohol withdrawal

Avatar f tn I too would recommend trying the Clonidine. As others have said, it is an anti-hypertensive medication that does help to relieve w/d symptoms quite successfully. It will not take them away completely, but it will minimize some of the symptoms, by reducing the sympathetic nervous system response, such as tachycardia and high BP. It's not a habit-forming drug, and really, the biggest consideration is some hypotension (low BP).
Avatar n tn just dont drink any alcohol with it it takes away the strenght of the clonidine no more than 900 mcg daily for detox of opiates and methadome and for the alcohol and the benzos. hope this helps feel free to ask! if you dont ask you dont find out right!
Avatar m tn anyone have any info on using Clonidine .1 mg for opiate withdrawal systems? Suppose to be a high blood pressure medication, but says it can be used for withdrawal systems too? wondering if it really works?
Avatar f tn I have been taking pain meds for almost 10 due to a doctor puncturing my intestine during a lapscope resulting in 2 major surgeries each year to remove portions of my intestines. I had 2 staph infections which reslted in major surgeries, not to mention chronic migraines and endometriosis. All of this happened just because a doctor did not want to open me up to fix the hole he put in my intestines when he put the lap in. Instead he let me go home and develope peritionitis.
10047460 tn?1407438406 well at first I would say that methadone has a 36hr half life so acute withdrawal will not set in until the 3rd day if you do not have any it will get progressive worst day one will be uncomfortable day 2 will have a lot of anxiety sweets and day 3 it will hit with force a lot has a lot to due with how high your dose is how long you been on it and your age I would not recommend this fill us im on the dose and how long you been on it............................Gnarly.......................
Avatar f tn it is hard but its doable, the clonodine will help little, i am in recovery from alcohol also, but i didnt find the opiate withdrawal any worse, (or better, ) sorry to say, make sure you drink plenty of fluids , like gatorade or juices, you might need imodium for any stomache problems or diorreah, also take hot baths and get some fresh air and walking can help, i wish you well, god bless .
Avatar n tn Suboxone is a great buffer so you have time to get your recovery in place and life in order. I will not plan to stay on forever. When you get everything in order maximum one year I would start an outpatient detox to taper off the suboxone via a few non addictive medications like Clonidine and Serquel. I did a 6 week taper from 16MG per day with Clonidine and Serquel and the withdrawals were mild. I jumped off from .5MG.
Avatar n tn does clonidine in combination with ultram, help the severe withdrawal from opana?
Avatar f tn clonidine is originally for high blood pressure, and since the high bp causes a lot of the withdrawal symptoms (racing heart, sweats, etc) the Clonidine is suppose to lower your bp and help with these symptoms. It is possible your bp is dropping too low. Do you have a blood pressure cuff and have you talked to your doctor? You can go to a walgreens/walmart and have blood pressure taken as well.
1128565 tn?1316721143 He overdosed himself on clonidine last week trying to stop the withdrawal symptoms long enough to sleep. Well, he nearly made it an eternal sleep. BP dangerously low and breathing very shallow with long breaks in between. I was up for most of 2 days checking on him. Adding mass quantities of alcohol and other things to the mix didn't help matters either.
Avatar f tn I drove to the drug store to fill my prescriptions but instead went in to by sleep aide. I did not fill the clonidine. I am not looking for anymore high. I just want to be over this. I am going to get some counseling after this is over.
Avatar f tn Kind oF want to know what to expect outside of the normal opiate withdrawal... I have trazadone and clonidine along with lots of immodium and benydrill... I also have some melatonin and l tyrosine suppliments...
Avatar m tn You are taking over twice the lethal dose at 30 tablets! ANY combination with alcohol or with certain other medications that deplete a certain substance in the body and the result could be liver failure. Withdrawal from tylenol with codeine is NOT fatal. Alcohol withdrawl can be, as can w/d from benzos like xanax of valium. But as they say, with opiates you only WISH you were dead. Your best bet is a combination of detox and treatment, with or without Suboxone.
Avatar n tn The medication that can help depends on your symptoms. What is it you're feeling? Perhaps you are withdrawing too quickly? Some doctors like to push for small reductions every week. Others will reduce by 15-25% and let you stabilize for a month or two. The thing with tramadol is that you're withdrawing from two neurochemical aspects of the medication -- from its opioid action and from its serotonin reuptake inhibitor action.
Avatar f tn Hi there, I am tapering down from methadone, was at 130mgs two years ago, and am currently at 41mgs, now tapering 2mg /week. I am already starting to get withdrawal symptoms which surprises me as this is not really a small dose. I am going hot and cold and getting hot flashes and really nauseous. My methadone doctor told me that clonidine will help these symptoms, I know some of you have tried it. I was wondering if I should start taking it, I am so uncomfortable.
Avatar f tn Thanks everyone. Mary......Its so scary, because one day something is good for you, then the next its not! Only if you have had or have a history of cancer should you avoid soy? I think. Been doing so much research. Blade thanks.....I wasn't sure, because I haven't gotten the clonidine yet. Doctor put in the order yesterday. I would assume BP medicine would be time released, I guess not. So now.......no more grapefruit juice, right?
Avatar f tn In my opinion, opioid withdrawal is so miserable that both can and should be used-- IF in a controlled environment, such as a detox center or hospital. But I would be very careful about prescribing benzos for outpatient withdrawal---- they are respiratory depressants, and if the person starts using opioid agonists in combination with benzos, there is significant risk for overdose and even death. Clonidine, on the other hand, doesn't have the respiratory depressant actions.
526311 tn?1229286330 The librium and clonidine are to help you not feel the symptoms (or feel less of them) of w/d. They don't delay w/d if that's what you are asking. The diarrhea is a sign that your body is experiencing w/d. Be thankful the librium and clonidine are working so well. You can take immodium for the runs on top of the other two meds.
Avatar f tn 1 clonidine to take 6 times a day. I am 58 years old never used drugs or drink alcohol. Raised 4 kids by myself . I have multiple sclerosis and use a wheelchair and they treated me like I was a dangerous criminal. I have to get off this awful drug . It just causes mental anguish, nausea shakes etc... Need support .
Avatar f tn 1 mg a day in patch form. I lowered one dose and BP WENT to 200/168 with a 157 pulse . So I took a clonidine and in about an hour was back down. I don't think the Dr realized I have been taking .1 mg 6 times a day. Really thought I was going to die. Also the mental anguish came back fom lowering the methadone way to fast. I will ak to just go 1 ml wait 3 days and if not too sick lower another 1 ml.
877402 tn?1241569071 All I do know is that after a person commits to their quit, the clonidine helps so very much! I continue to say, clonidine keeps you "in your skin" ya know? In that alone helps so much with the "detox" part.
Avatar f tn Today, I was curious about how long does it take to detox and didnt see any comments about Clonidine. If anyone can get your hands on it, it is a life-saver during the withdrawal period. Last time I only took it a few days. a week tops. I would pop one every now and then if I felt jittery. It is not a controlled substance and there is NO risk for addicton to this medication (Clonidine). I am suprised it is not more widely discussed or known about.
Avatar n tn Hi. She needs to do this NOW before the addiction gets any worse. I was up to around 30 or more of those 10mg a day and right now I'm in rehab. You need to get her Clonidine for the withdrawl symptoms. Thats what they give you in rehab. Its only a blood pressure medication but has be found to also relieve symptoms of opiate WD's. I'm telling you I tried to detox from the pain pills at home MANY times and failed every time. The WD's are HORRIBLE.
1032715 tn?1315984234 I am familiar with the meds that you are taking and valium is commonly used for withdrawal - both alcohol and opiates. Your alcohol consumption is pretty high, I was using 2-3 liters of vodka per week and when I decided to quit, I did not have that rough of a time, but I was on some significant doses of valium for about 10 days and I know that helped. Another medication that physicians will use or withdrawal to the codeine/opiates is clonidine - that is typically for blood pressure.
Avatar n tn if u have a low blood pressure clonidine is not a good choice...usually when we r in wd our blood pressure rise...talk to ur dr about using that drug and keep an eye on ur blood pressure while on it..it helps with sleep, anxiety and the tummy problems cos it slows everything down...dont rely on valium for sleep if u can avoid it..there r safer choices out there that r not so addictive..altho valium is much weaker than xanax, ativan and klonopin..u still have to realize it is a benzo..
