657236 tn?1224723091 Hi My young daughter was diagnosed with Central Sleep Apnea........ We Have had her on Oxygen therapy, of which it helped to settle the apnea down some. She's still having episodes and at the moment theyre bad enough to fully wake her and she finds it difficult to settle back to sleep.... She is almost 7 and i am wondering do you have any ideas to help her?
568603 tn?1240404035 Hi, I have sleep apnea and can give you a little information. The more you know the less you will worry. Machines come set between 4 and 20. However, most people need at least 7-8 cm h2o to be able to breathe without feeling like they are suffocating. The number of the pressure prescription doesn't have anything to do with the severity of your sleep apnea.
1580703 tn?1651904887 This person's post was a little confusing as he mentions both sleep apnea and central apnea in one breath (sorry!), and I don't know if he's interchanging them. Treatment for central apneas are a little different than sleep apnea. Central apneas result from a literal disconnect of the brain to the muscles that help one breathe. CPAP can help some central apneas, but drug therapy I think is the most common treatment. I have about 6 years on CPAP, or about 15,000 hours.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if you could tell me more about central sleep apnea..there is very limited information about it online. I wake up gasping for air as I'm falling asleep, almost as if I stopped breathing. I'm no doctor, but from what I read central sleep apnea occurs several times during the course of a night, but it happens in stages 1&2 of sleep which is when it occurs in my situation. This has only happened to me 3 times in the course of a month or so.
Avatar m tn Hello, Chances are that you are not having obstructive sleep apnea but central or mixed apnea. Central apnea occurs when the part of the brain that controls breathing doesn't start or properly maintain the breathing process.Found commonly in Poliomyelitis, encephalitis ,neurodegnerative diseases ,complications of surgery or radiation therapy to the cervical spine and stroke.
539750 tn?1226521677 Hi, from your history it suggests that you are having Sleep-disordered breathing. It is important to rule out type of sleep apnea like Obstructive apnea, Central apnea and Mixed apnea. You need to undergo tests to rule out the type of apnea. Few of the tests include Apnea index, Apnea-hypopnea index, Respiratory disturbance index, Desaturation and Arousal index.
Avatar m tn So, this is liable to collapse and cause airway obstruction resulting in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is by CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) where air under gentle pressure is passed into the airways keeping it patent. Central sleep apneas are caused due disorders or lesions in the brain. The peripheral system does not get the right impulses for respiration and hence the stoppage of respiration. As a result the person is aroused from sleep.
1580703 tn?1651904887 It has been shown to be effective therapy in primary central sleep apnea and CSB in patients with heart failure and in the treatment of high-altitude periodic breathing. • Theophylline: This agent has been studied in patients with heart failure and was found to be effective in attenuating CSB.[34] It may also be effective for high-altitude periodic breathing. • Sedative hypnotics: These agents have been used successfully in treating nonhypercapnic central sleep apnea.
Avatar n tn ve never heard of those things causing Central Sleep apnea, however, for the record, my thyroid tests are normal, as is my ejection fraction, pacer working fine, have been a vegetarian for years and lost 30 lbs. 3 years ago-enough to cure my pre-diabetic state. I do have persistent "jerking"=RLS and PLMD at night. Medication has been of little benefit.
Avatar f tn I was recently told I might have central sleep apnea but not what it involves. I was sent home from the hospital with a temporary cpap and am being scheduled for a sleep study. I am having trouble using the cpap machine. I am afraid to sleep as the doctor did say that with this apnea the brain forgets to tell you to breath. They said my oxygen levels dropped to 64 during the night. I have developed swollen legs, ankles and feet.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with central sleep apnea. I am also experiencing forgetfulness, clumsiness, severe nerve pain at different places throughout my body, loss of ability to concentrate and multitask, and I have a high ANA titer. I am currently taking Plaquenil and am being fitted for Bipap. I have a hx of schwanoma of the lumbar spine with resection some 10 yrs ago. I also have developed fibromyalgia.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with central sleep apnea, with about 26 brain awakenings per hr, no REM, and numerous breathing stops of 30 seconds or more during several sleep studies. (I also had several instances of obstructive sleep apnea incidents during various sleep studies.) It's probably no wonder that I also have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as chronic myofascial pain syndrome and degenerative disc disease.
Avatar f tn did you get a copy of your sleep study? Your sleep study will tell you how many obstructive apneas, central apneas, hypopneas, and RERA's (respiratory effort related arousals). I have almost all RERA's and 7 Hypopneas and am technically "UARS - Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome." If you have the report, that can help a lot in determining which.
1580703 tn?1651904887 I am not sure from your description whether you have central sleep apnea (CSA) or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or perhaps both. UPPP surgery is generally useful for OSA. CPAP is useful for both OSA and CSA. For CSA it is hypothesized that if sleep continuity can be preserved, sleep disordered breathing could be improved. There is some evidence that clonazepam helps when there is CSA present along with periodic leg movements (which you have described).
Avatar f tn Ask your neuro doc if the lesions are located in a place they could cause central sleep apnea. If so, there are specialized cpap machines that work like a ventilator to deal with it. Especially with other health issues to fight, sleep is so important to restoring your body for each day's stresses. A sleep study would avoid a lot of guessing or trial and error, and could help you know how to get the sleep you need.
702513 tn?1228512697 My husband was diagnosed with Central Sleep Apnea. He has been to 5 Repiratory Specialists, 7 neurologists, tried CPAP, now on BiPap. Long story short -- the Bi-Pap isn't working. He is falling asleep behind the wheel and at work, incoherent, etc. Oh...he is also an insomniac, has chronic migraines, chronic pain, and is on 10 medications. Needless to say, we have no life anymore.
1580703 tn?1651904887 ve said I thrashed around all night long with arms and legs, looking like I was seizing, and I did have central sleep apnea. But three different sleep studies (also showing oxygen dropping below 80% at night), none of these places or doctors have actually tried to treat any of it. I did spend a night where I was supposed to be able to try different kinds of masks for the breathing apparatus.
Avatar n tn Do you have any signs or symptoms of sleep apnea? Sometimes those with sleep apnea experience odd sensations when their oxygen level drops causing inadequate oxygen to the brain. The two types of apnea we hear about most often are obstructive and central. Obstructive happens when the airway collapses and closes off. Central is neurologic in origin, and sometimes is a result of head injury or a response to meds that suppress the central nervous system.
1580703 tn?1651904887 my sleep apnea is getting worse, now I have headaches when I don't use bipap and my oxygen on the sleep study was 70%, it's hard to adjust to the bipap machine I really want to get tonsil surgery- did it help anyone here?
Avatar m tn I think You should go for the CPAP treatment as the sleep apnea treatment. It will help you a lot as reccommended by the doctor as the best treatment. http://www.sleepapnea-treatment.
Avatar f tn • An apnea index > 5 • Central apneas/hypopneas > 50% of total apneas/hypopneas • Central apneas or hypopneas occurring at least 5 times per hour • Symptoms of either excessive sleepiness or disrupted sleep
1580703 tn?1651904887 I had 75% O2 on a sleep study with a central apnea. I have 1/10 the normal stage 3 sleep at 0.5% and mixed apnea and can't sleep through the night on my asv. THanks very much!
Avatar m tn My son is 4 Years old and diagnosed with obstructive and central sleep apnea. When at a sleep study with cpap and bipap machines it made his central apnea worse where he was having severe central episodes with blood oxygen levels dropping into the 50-60's. He was ordered an MRI and they discovered Chiari Malformation 16mm. We live in Buffalo NY and saw a surgeon who wanted to perform surgery. We want to get a second opinion from a Dr. in Rochester NY.
Avatar n tn It is not unheard of to buy a machine online and treat oneself for obstructive sleep apnea. With the data capable and auto titrating machines, generally speaking, one can tell if the treatment is effective. (With a basic machine, you are shooting in the dark.) Here's the downside to self treatment. If one has central sleep apnea or complex sleep apnea, you wouldn't know that and your treatment may not be effective.
