celexa withdrawal duration

s for 5+ years for OCD and she has always had troublesome side effects. She is now on Celexa, the side effects seemed to be better in the beginning, but not anymore. She experiences terrible thoughts and twitching feelings in her legs and arms. We are wanting to take her off SSRI's completely, but we are worried about the withdrawl symptoms. Can anyone tell us what to expect and just how you were able to stop an anti-depressant? P.S.

Instead of giving me beta blocker to take before performances, which is what I expected (and should have gotten), she diagnosed me as having generalized anxiety disorder and put me on low-dose Celexa (10 mg/day). I had horrible side effects (mostly gastrointestinal and sleep disturbances) but I kept with it as she indicated, for 6 months.

I have never been on Celexa myself, but I have read many posts regarding withdrawal from it and it seems to take people a month or two to feel completely normal. ssri withdrawal can be worse than opiate withdrawal. Doesn't have to be, but some are hit very hard by it. You seem to be one of those. Never stop these cold turkey. If you can't handle the withdrawal, go back on the last dose of Celexa at which you felt fine and taper down as slowly as you need to.

That is a very interesting story, going cold turkey on Celexa and not having withdrawal side effects. For anyone reading, do not do this because the withdrawal mental effects can be unnecessarily agonizing and pointless. In your case, you had no choice the way you describe it, so I am not passing judgement. What was your dose? You should talk to a pharmacist immediately though for information.

You might be experiencing withdrawal from the Celexa. Remeron is a different antidepressant that will act differently on you neurotransmitters. For example, Celexa was only inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin while Remoron is an antagonist of the 5-HT1A receptor and is most likely to affect your dopamine and noradrenaline (by affecting the adrenergic and 5-HT receptors) levels while not inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin itself as it's a serotonin receptor antagonist.

Just to say that I once tapered off Zoloft and was started on Celexa - the pdoc had me do this way too suddenly and I had bad withdrawal. In my case I found that the Celexa didn't help me and I wish I had realized this sooner, I waited months until I felt really horrid and ended up back on Zoloft. May not be the case with you, but just wanted to mention the possibility as I stuck with the Celexa too long.

Been taking 30 mg of celexa for just over 4 weeks for anxiety....had dry mouth and a little fogginess for the first couple of weeks but that has worn off. First, a GP is not an expert on ssris. Even most psychiatrists haven't a clue. Second, all ssris have withdrawal problems, and although it's true Celexa has been easier on the whole than, say, Paxil, or Effexor, if you go on withdrawal websites you'll still see plenty of severe withdrawal problems. He's put you on Prozac because it's a long-lasting ssri, whereas all the others are very short lived in the body; usually they'll use liquid Prozac so they can wean slowly.

You are suffering what sounds to me like classic withdrawal symptoms of going off an ssri such as Celexa. When my psychiatrist switched me from Lexapro to Celexa, she still tapered me slowly off the Lexapro and slowly switched me over to the Celexa. Which is what your psychiatrist should have done, assuming you have a psychiatrist and aren't using a PCP -- they're clueless about these meds (so are most psychiatrists, but you at least have a fighting chance).

My Dr prescribed me Celexa for Anxiety several years ago and now I'm off of them after tapering off the medication per my Dr. But the side effects are awful. I have been on depression meds for 2 years and im TTC but I can't just quit them suddenly because of the terrible withdrawl I have experienced in the past. I could whean off but im on 20 mgs of Celexa and it might take a while. Should I stay on it if im pregnant? I don't know what to do. Any advice would be great!

First, you haven't lost any serotonin to replenish -- Celexa didn't increase your serotonin, it altered the way your body processes it and blocks its breakdown. I don't know if you stopped slowly or abruptly, but you could be suffering a withdrawal if you have a level of anxiety much greater now than that which you had that caused you go on the drug in the first place.

Since this post, have you started taking the celexa? I took it for one month two months ago. The only symptoms I had were trouble sleeping and I could not orgasm. It helped me with anxiety though and when I got angry, I did not get as agitated as usual. I then tried zoloft and experienced the same symptoms only worse insomnia and I didn't feel like it helped my anxiety. Oh, and I did not have withdrawl symptoms.
