Celexa vs prozac drugs

Common Questions and Answers about Celexa vs prozac drugs

Avatar f tn I think you made a good choice. Lexapro is literally the only SSRI I've taken that has not caused severe side effects. I have a very difficult time with drugs and this one was a godsend for me. (I've tried Celexa, Zoloft, Paxil, & Effexor.) I took the generic for a month and didn't notice any difference in it's effectiveness versus Lexapro.
Avatar m tn lol For the Celexa, what I really wanted to say and ask is IF I will have more side-effects than with the Lexapro... since both drugs are very similar but the Celexa is more dirty, that's mean that taking a small dose of Celexa like 1 mg will be = to 0.5 mg of Lexapro no?... For the Paxil, we don't have the oral suspension version of it in the Canada... and crush the 10 mg pill into podwer and try to only take 1 mg at the time is really hard... Someone have a trick to achieve that???
Avatar f tn Effexor (an SNRI as mentioned above) is also a tough one to get off, compared to other ADs. Lexapro, Zoloft, Celexa and Prozac are typically the easier tolerated ADs (again, everyone is different). I personally would recommend sticking with the SSRIs vs the SNRIs for anxiety, because due to the fact that their primary mechanism of action affects norepinephrine (aka adrenaline), they are quite activating, and can cause more anxiety.
Avatar n tn 1st episode was treated with Prozac, Xanax and brief therapy. 2nd episode was treated without drugs, but I was in therapy for almost 3 yrs. For this 3rd episode, I went to the ob/gyn first, who put me on small dose of Prozac and sent me to therapy. After going back to him several times (still in therapy), but without improvement, he sent me to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist and I did not get along, but he did put me on Effexor, which helped tremendously.
415867 tn?1323369103 Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. For Paxil and Zoloft, the weight gain can add up to five to 40 pounds a year. Some people do experience weight gain with Lexapro or Celexa, but most don’t. In this case, it is not a surprise to have idiosyncratic responses, since the chemical structure of all the SSRIs is so similar.
341953 tn?1209485491 Well I called yesterday to let the nurse know, and now she wants me to try Celexa. I told her I was not depressed and did not really want to be taking an anti depressant. She said the doctor told me to at least try it. Does anyone have expierence with any of these? And for actual anxiety, not getting high from either class of pills, what is better? Do both of them really change the makeup and chemistry of your brain, or is it just the SSRIs that do that?
Avatar n tn Your idea of increasing the dose during a rough period is a good one...talk to your doctor about doing that.
Avatar f tn out there even though I think it is more for the shorter acting ones like ativan and especially xanax, I really think there is more of a stigma about benzos than there is for any of the other drugs. I had horrible experiences with paxil, celexa, atenolol and endured them just because I thought that in the long run, I was told, that they would make me feel better; well they didn't.
944643 tn?1418218022 When that wasn't helping they were going to up my dosage yet again, but didn't because he said the FDA doesn't recommend u go any higher than that. I'm now on Celexa. Anyway, since I've been reading a lot about bipolar disorder lately, I've realized...OMG I'M BIPOLAR!!!! When I was diagnosed with clinical depression, I always argued it. My reasoning was, "I'm not depressed...only sometimes. I'm also a happy person and when I'm happy, I'm not depressed at all.
Avatar n tn There is no such thing as the best drug or drugs combination for GAD or other types of anxiety. It is by trial and error that one will find the best drug/s for oneself. The most important is the combination of the drug/s and the individual and psychotherapy. Have you had CBT? There are a lot of difference between difference SSRIs with respect to their effects and side effects. Lexapro is newer and claims to be an improved formula over Celexa.
Avatar f tn Drugs made me feel better and trying to live without them just feels like a long dark tunnel with nothing to look forward to. I have been on paxil, celexa, elavil, doxepin, effexor, abilify, prozac, wellbutrin, seroquil and god knows what else, too many to count and nothing helps. If it weren't for my kids I wouldn't even want to live any more, just not worth the fight.
Avatar m tn Most of the drugs in that category do increase the odds of weight gain, but it's because you have more urges to eat not the drug just inceases your weight.. Here is the list I found on what works the best vs. the most tolerated drugs - not necessarily better drugs. It was printed in The Lancet, one of the most respected medical journals.
Avatar f tn I too find ssris very stimulating (sleeping thru the night is a problem) I am taking Celexa which is not a stimulating as Lexapro or Prozac. I used to take Zoloft but after awhile it gave me alot of stomach problems. I too take xanax (.25 once a day) It seems to take the edge off. I take 30 mg of celexa, but I don't think it is working completely because I am obsessing and feeling abit depressed. I constantly have to urinate and do have diarreah. I read that Celexa can cause that.
Avatar f tn How does it affect the mental addiction to eat constantly and crave certain foods? I take celexa but only 10 mg but it doesn't help in any noticeable way. Would Prozac be better?
Avatar m tn What makes Alternative Medications seem OK or safer to you? Does 5HTP work? In some people, absolutely. What makes 5HTP different than Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro or one of the millions of other anti depressants on the market? FDA Approval. 5HTP was originally marketed as L-Tryptophan. It worked for many people. It was a perscription drug. In 1990 the FDA banned all Tryptophan containing products from the market after an outbreak of a blood disease EMS.
Avatar n tn Wait a sec, folks! I had severe depression for a couple decades and used drugs and therapy to beat it---successfully. I haven't needed drugs for twenty years since, and while I probably need intensive therapy, I'm not depressed (at least not "per se"). ----> But the drugs I used didn't have horrible withdrawals. <--- Is the choice really only depression vs horrible a withdrawal?
Avatar m tn I just wanted to get feedback on the best long-term SSRI-type drugs (Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, etc.) you all might have tried. Do they ever work at all? I suffer from stress-related generalized anxiety and occasional panic attacks. This has also, I believe, helped to increase my typical blood pressure readings to above normal (very healthy 28-year-old, otherwise. I work out, am at healthy weight, etc.).
Avatar n tn The antidepressant included in tramadol is close in chemical structure to the antidepressant effexor which is generally accepted as the hardest AD to withdraw from, hence the difficulties many have getting off tram. The problem arises from the metabolites of both drugs which have long half lives making withdrawal a non-linear drawn out process.
Avatar f tn youre sex drive may be down because of the anxiety.. sorry i took zofloft for only a few weeks then switched to prozac.
Avatar n tn To counter the agitation, my doc did not lower my wellbutrin, but increased my seroquel. Your drugs may not have in your blood very long. Any bp med will take at least 4 weeks to settle in. bummer, but true.
Avatar f tn Is there any med our doctor might suggest that you strongly advise AGAINST? Can you recommend a CREDIBLE source for the latest information on drugs to help us weigh risks vs. benefits? I know that's our doctor's role, but what if he is not as well informed as he seems, or is unduly influenced by the pharmaceutical detail people? I fully understand that you have to caveat your response, but I'm terrified of wrecking our son's brain. We have been working on food sensitivities (esp.
419309 tn?1326506891 My husband is scheduled for shot #1 on November 3rd, and although he has no clinical psychiatric issues, the NP has suggested he consider pre-dosing with an anti-depressant (the choices offered were Lexapro, Celexa, Effexor, and (sp?) Norapinephrine). It seems to me contradictory that the warnings on all these ADs actually point to possible side effects of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts -- the very things these meds are supposed to prevent!
1503221 tn?1289588063 It feels much better to be seen by a dr that only deals with this kind of stuff vs a family dr that does a lot of everything but not an expert in mental stuff. My family dr for the first few years was fine but a few months ago I had the worst depression I've ever had and through my family dr found a good psychiatrist. Becuase of sexual side effects we are in the process of weaning off one drug and going on another.
737515 tn?1252556023 I have successfully taken prozac and unsuccessfully taken celexa and lexapro. I now take a SNRI rather than a SSRI. What I take is Wellbutrin and while it did increase my anxiety for the first 4 or so weeks, after that I was good. I think it has the least side effects as far as weight gain goes and it has the least side effects on the libido. So if you are not happy with what you are taking, then you should discuss this with your doctor and possibly try something else.
Avatar n tn I just started on prozac - 2weeks ago, and have already noticed weight gain. My clothes are so tight! How is it possible to gain weight without eating more?
Avatar n tn Went from Fit to Fat in about 6 months of starting med's and have found no way around it. It's a choice...mental health vs. physical health.
Avatar m tn The use of AD drugs in BP and BPII is not something that is neccesary for all or most patients and in the case of SSRI drugs like Prozac is something that can be dangerous in a decent segment of patients - Atypical Depression and AD drugs can be a recipe for disaster, i have scars from a suicide attempt to show you what Prozac is like to BPII's in some cases and it can and does cause suicide - you should never take a drug unless you really do need it - most of the most screwed up BP patients
135456 tn?1301441224 Paroxetin, to increase serotonin and a combination of b vitamins and these other drugs? Or are these other drugs sul, ei the vitamins? Sorry, I am little dense here! I also use ginger tea to settle stomach, and live on Ritz crackers! I feel ok this time mentaly, but physically, this is harder. I also make myself stretch every day, and find if I hit shower early, I feel better, try and walk and loads of water!
886699 tn?1270783344 I would say ask your doctor about possible depression and anxiety meds if you're not on them already. With Neurocardiogenic Syncope (NCS - which I have), SSRIs (Lexapro, Celexa, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc) are one form of treatment. So for me it's like 2 birds with 1 stone! Good luck!
