Antidepressants don't usually make people gain weight, and definitely not the ones that people will prescribe you as your first few antidepressants. (Some people don't respond to some antidepressants, and have to try several). Weight gain is on the list of possible symptoms of pretty much every psychiatric medication out there, but then so is suicidal thoughts, and that doesn't happen to lots of people who take the drugs otherwise they wouldn't be called antidepressants.

Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. For Paxil and Zoloft, the weight gain can add up to five to 40 pounds a year. Some people do experience weight gain with Lexapro or Celexa, but most don’t. In this case, it is not a surprise to have idiosyncratic responses, since the chemical structure of all the SSRIs is so similar.

So when I found out I was pregnant I stopped taking my antidepressants and today (20 weeks pregnant) I went to my psychiatrist, after a long time, and he said it was fine to take the medication but I'm unsure. The medicine is Prozac (fluxotine) and I was wondering if it's really okay. Anyone have any experience in this?

My doctor put me on antidepressants but I read on the internet they're not good to take while pregnant because they can cause the baby to be slow and lazy, mentally. So I haven't been taking them. I had to see a neurologist today because of horrible migraines and he said the anti-depressant (it's celexa by the way) could help with my horrible migraines and I reallly should be taking them for my depression any way.

Two weeks ago my psychiatrist prescribed me antidepressants (Celexa) to go along with my mood stabilizer (Epival) because I was starting to get depressed again. For about the past week I've been feeling absolutely great for the most part. Halfway through the week though I started noticing I was snapping at people at work, which is not like me at all. I mean, I was yelling at people pretty much and for stupid reasons at that.

We are lucky if something happens once in 2 weeks. Prior to all this it was almost every night or every other night. Any advise or med advise?

I have taken many different ones for 3-4 years now. They all lose effectiveness. I was on celexa for 1 year and it made me chatty, neurotic and too much complaining. Increase the dose it makes me agitated and unstable. So do anti-psychotics/ anti-depressants increase or decrease cortisol secretion and do they cause adrenal fatigue. Has anyone found some ways to get relief and improvement from this illness besides good diet, talk therapy and exercise.

What kind of side effects did you experience? Any suggestions for any other antidepressants...that you find work well, thank you!

I noticed that all mood stabilizers make me feel dumb and slow. The only medication that has ever worked is celexa, but they say that people with bipolar I are not supposed to take antidepressants. I also have GAD and take klonopin. My question is if there is anyone that takes celexa and does well with it and has bipolar I? I feel great right now.

Just an open question. Anyone that has hep-c oand is on Antidepressants what is your experience? Do they work? Fear of liver damage? I have read alot but want to see what everyone thinks? The only AD that I have found to say "not for patients with liver disease" is Cymbalta. But what about the others?? Thanks for your feedback!

I am convinced that my Celexa is a major culprit in my weight gain. Before Celexa, I was on Zoloft, and the first week on Zoloft I lost weight, but then stabilized and slowly began to gain weight. the weight gain was not a big amount but it did happen. Then a few yrs later, I began having problems on Zoloft so my Doc switched me to Celexa, and "whamo!", BIG WEIGHT GAIN! It was amazing! On top of the weight gain, Celexa has made me lethargic and very tired.

Why do some antidepressants cause weight gain? What if you are eatting a 1500 calorie a day and burning the amount of calories to loose weight...do they still make you gain weight? Or is it because while on the medication you just eat more? What if you control your food intake do you still gain weight. I am on cymbalta and I am never hungry but it is giving me other bad side effects so I am afraid the doctor is going to change it and all the other options I have read about all say weight gain.

The first year, our sex life was amazing, and I had a voracious appetite to the point where he had trouble keeping up sometimes. Then, due to other circumstances, I decided to go back on celexa after a year into our relationship. I also have a mirena IUD i thought that my lack of libido/cramping, etc was the result of the added hormones. To make matters worse, since I've been on celexa, I CANNOT have an orgasm- something that I could previously achieve on a regular basis with my partner.

I was on celexa and my dr said it was one of the safer ones. I chose to stop taking them when I was 8 weeks pregnant.

Hi Everyone! Just one fast question here... I really need to start again a SSRI for my extreme panic disorder and I want to know if the Celexa will work to stop the panic disorder, since I took it for my social phobia at 60 mg/day back in 1999 for 6 months and it did nothing for the social anxiety and my anxiety level didn't improve on it?

11 deletion. Which yes can cause bipolar and autism. amongst other things. I am off of Celexa now but I went through major trauma getting off that medication. I did read the information online because talking to the pharmisicist and the doctor like many sugusted goes in and out the ear. So now I am on Topmax 400 mg. My synthroid I would have to check what mg Vitamid D2 only every other week.

I was prescribed the anti depressant Celexa. Now, right now I have no plans of becoming pregnant, but I really do want to within the next 5 years. However, I am aware that I can not take Celexa while trying to conceive or during pregnancy. Does anyone know what my options will be when I want to conceive? Will I have to be weened off of the medicine, and stay off of it for the full 9 months? Is there a safe alternative to Celexa that I can take? Please help.

I cannot tell you to take 4 mg suboxone in the morning and 4 at night, but if the pharmacy will not fill the subutex, then you may want to talk with your doctor because he may be able to help you sort out the issue with the pharmacy. On the Celexa, I have taken antidepressants before, but never really had too much luck with them, as I had some side effects that I did not like.

ADs and BP disorder are always an interesting conundrum. I know that there have been extensive studies regarding a Zyprexa/Prozac combination for BP disorder. Those studies have shown to be effective. If you and your pdoc are thinking about going with Prozac, I would probably look into using it with Zyprexa. The ADs can be hit or miss, especially with BP folks. I know that I (along with many BP friends) have had serious issues with all of the ADs.

My question is....Have any of you tried this approach and has it worked? My other question is....if I do go the Celexa way....are there bad withdrawls if you go off? And is it good for anxiety. He said it is, but I just read on here that somebody said it gave them the jitters... thanks so much....

What they did was cut Celexa in half to create Lexapro, and thus were able to get a new patent. Celexa is a lot cheaper, therefore. If Celexa is working, I probably wouldn't switch; if it isn't, then I probably would.

If you mean snri, such as Effexor and Cymbalta, these are very stimulating antidepressants (as is wellbutrin) and can cause anxiety because of that. Lexapro and Celexa are very similar medications -- Lexapro is basically Celexa with some of it removed -- and these are ssris. Sometimes you can get rid of the sexual side effects by adding a small dose of wellbutrin to them. The question is, if you were on meds that worked, why were you switched? Did they stop working?

I was only antidepressants (Celexa) for 5 years. During those 5 years my heart felt the best it ever has in my life. Fewer than 1 PVC per day and not a single episode of SVT. I wish I'd not been stupid enough to go off of the Celexa.

So she thought it would be a good idea to try an antidepressant since I have been diagnoised with depression even before my addiction. She put me on 10mg of celexa and 0.25mg of xanax as needed. But if you are sure you are manic (only pdocs decide that) then you better stop the celexa since rule no 1 in BP antidepressants aren't taken during mania otherwise elongate the episode and the meds will increase later. My modest view I think the meds need adjustment. You said you have been recently diagnosed. if you mean this month or this year say then usually at the onset of a disease they start by antipsychotics this i read once somewhere, later they revert to a mood stabilizer.
