Celexa and sexual dysfunction

Common Questions and Answers about Celexa and sexual dysfunction

Avatar n tn Dear John Celexa can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, pain in the joints and muscles, sexual dysfunction and several others. Since you are taking the medications for the last one year, I would recommend that you have a complete physical examination to rule out any medical condition precipitating those symptoms. Once medical conditions are ruled out, you may talk to your Psychiatrist for other treatment options. Sincerely HFHS-M.D.
Avatar n tn This is the kind of sexual side effect assosiated with Celexa...and its hard to predict whether it will go away...in most cases, it will go away or diminish enough in about four weeks...so if you like themedication, you should probaby stick with it a few more weeks to see what happens....
Avatar m tn Buspar is an anti-anxiety medication but can be used for Sexual Dysfunction. Just a process of trial and error. In my experience, I take 300 mgs of Luvox. I got to where I couldnt ejaculate. My psychiatrist put me on buspar, after a while i started more and more to get my sex drive back and the ability to ejaculate. He explains it a lot better than I did..
Avatar n tn your mind and interpersonal skills are most important. So relax and stop putting pressure on yourself. If you'd like to explore lasting longer, here are some techniques: First, slow down during self-pleasuring and unlearn that old pattern of quick orgasm. Try teasing yourself by stimulating yourself just to the point where you feel you’re about to orgasm, then backing off and relaxing, and then beginning again.
Avatar n tn I started on Effexor 5 wks ago and was having trouble urinating and have ejaculation pain. Stopped the Efxxor after 3wks and went to Celexa. Have been on for 2wks and still have the problem. Has anyone had to strain to actually get the urine started were now i have straining pain in my groin. Plus delayed ejaculation?
Avatar m tn I'm having issues with not only erectile dysfunction, but libido, and just overall sex drive. I was married for 5 years, got divorced a year ago, and since then I have had a lot of sexual partners but I've realized that I was intoxicated for the most part during all of the times I had sex. Well, now, I have cleaned up my act and have a wonderful woman who I know I'll spend the rest of my life with. I am sober, feel great, but I'm having problems with the one thing I need most: SEX!
Avatar n tn i have been on celexa (cipramil/citalopram)for 7 years and have continued to drink alcohol on a regular and sometimes excessive basis with no ill effects. Infact i checked with my doctor who said this was fine and i checked in the british national formulary which states no ill effects except that the effects of alcohol can be possibly enhanced by ssri use.
Avatar n tn I am in Britain where Celexa is known as Cipramil. I was on it a year and tired of the sexual dysfunction and mental nullity- I'm a freelance writer and wrote nothing for that whole year- couldn't do it. Anyway, I tapered with Doctor's supervision and went through 'electric shocks' headaches and nausea etc. Now it's six weeks since my last dose and still I'm getting celexa-like symptoms- nausea and head rushes, muscle-stiffness and jerky spasms on going to bed.
Avatar f tn Is there anyone out there who suffered from Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction and got over it and became completely normal again. I am freaking out about this and I need to hear if there are other people out there who experienced this and how long it took people to get feelings back in their genitals. I will never go on an anti depressant again.
Avatar n tn I've been on 20mg of Celexa for the past week, and recently switched from Paxil, due to sexual dysfunction (which has been continuing, but to a lesser degree, so I'll deal with that for now). Could the marijuana be causing the sexual dysfuction? Could it be the combination? The other day I smoked pot and had a very strange reaction.
Avatar n tn nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth and sexual dysfunction. In general it is a well tolerated, non-addictive, safe and effective medication. Please search this forums archive for further information on this topic.
Avatar f tn The celexa (40mgs) is working ok for my panic attacks and anxiety but not great.... The zoloft worked great for years but pooped out on me at 200 mgs about 1 1/2 years ago. Everything I read says the odds are pretty slim that it will work the same again....DO I give it a shot or stay on the celexa and maybe add something with it ( her suggestion, wellburtrin ) I have been on the Celexa since last summer. Really confused about meds.
1503221 tn?1289588063 My family dr for the first few years was fine but a few months ago I had the worst depression I've ever had and through my family dr found a good psychiatrist. Becuase of sexual side effects we are in the process of weaning off one drug and going on another. It is frustrating but I have to have hope that this will work out eventually. I am glad to hear you are also seeing a therapist. I do the same (I'm a guy) and everything I have read says a combination of both is the best treatment.
5856747 tn?1403352282 No mention of female inability to orgasm, no mention of male ejaculatory failure, no mention of sexual anhedonia or sexual anesthesia in both men and women and no mention of loss of libido or sex drive in both men and women. All the consumer of modern antidepressants is being told is that there maybe some poor sexual performance. This is meaningless, unfair and disingenuous. But unfortunately, it gets much worse.
Avatar n tn He then put me on Lexapro. I took 5 mg because I knew it was stronger than Celexa and that worked fine for several years. For anxiety, I've taken .5 mg of Klonopin at night since starting the injections. Then after many years of not dating, I've recently started seeing someone and the sex is so frustrating! I knew my sex drive was weakening, but it didn't matter that much, now it's a real problem for me.
Avatar n tn Other medications such as Celexa may be helpful as it is similar to Prozac and may have less sexual dysfunction asssociated with it. The only way to know for sure if a medicine will be helpful is to have a full 4 week trial at standard therapuetic dosages. Please discuss this issue further with your treating physician. Wellbutrin SR in general has no sexual side effects asssociated with it and often is helpful to treat medication induced sexual dysfunction.
348629 tn?1212329273 celexa is an antidepressant and is used for anxiety too...it is not addictive, but if you decide to get on it, it can take up to a month to get results, and if your taking it for depression or anxiety or both you should see a difference, if not then its not the right one for you, its kind of trial and error at times to find the right one that works, some get lucky and find what works the first time.
Avatar n tn I am in Britain where Celexa is known as Cipramil. I was on it a year and tired of the sexual dysfunction and mental nullity- I'm a freelance writer and wrote nothing for that whole year- couldn't do it. Avatar n tn His penis seems to have shrunk. I know that Celexa can cause sexual dysfunction in adults because the Celexa effects testosterone, and I've been told that young boys need testosterone for growth and normal genitilia growth. I'm really frightened. I'm not concerned with his eventual sex life as an adult. Hopefully he'll be off his meds, I don't know. But he already struggles with issues, I'd hate for him to have another one, especially this kind of physical one!
Avatar f tn What kind of sexual side-effects? Hypersexuality or sexual dysfunction/lowered libido? If SSRIs give you anxiety and hypersexuality, that is a sign you might have some for of bipolar disorder. Have you ever had your thyroid checked? If yes, and they said your levels were "normal", did you get the specific numbers?
Avatar f tn Will these side effects wear off after I stop the Celexa? Can anyone who has experience with Celexa or other SSRIs tell me if their sexual side effects wore off after the treatment was over? If the sexual side effects are permanent (as some on the internet claim), then it's not worth it t me to take the drug.
Avatar f tn okay i am aware that i am still young and exploring my sexuality and so on but i don't believe that is causing the difficulties. i know sex (penetration) doesn't always have the best chance at achieving orgasm especially if you're not as experienced but i have tried a bunch of different positions and have not felt basically any sexual pleasure. which then comes to masturbation. i've tried everything the internet has to offer without using sex toys.
Avatar n tn : : a few months ago i had seen a news brief on tv about the "new" prozac which is supposed to have fewer sexual side effects. is this "modified" prozac what is being marketed as celexa? i'm extremely frustrated w/ the antidepressants that i've tried, finding that the most effective for me are the SSRIs, but everything i've tried has really hindered my sex drive.
Avatar n tn Jen, It appears that you are suffering from one of the most common side effects of antidepressants especially SSRIs--sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction is most commonly manifested by delayed ejaculation in men, inability to have an orgasm in women and decreased sex drive in both. The good news about this is that it resolves after discontinuing the medication.
Avatar n tn There are other antidepressants such as Wellbutrin and Serzone that have less sexual problems associated with them and some times are used in combination with a SSRI to treat these symptoms. A trial with one of these meds should be considered if not already attempted. I encourage you to discuss these issues further with your physician/psychiatrist. Sincerely, HFHS.
Avatar m tn Wellbutrin, the brand name of bupropion, had the lowest overall rate of sexual dysfunction. It was associated with a rate of 22% of the overall population. The sustained release formulation fared almost as well with a rate of 25%. In contrast, the SSRIs (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Celexa), venlafaxine (Effexor) and mirtazapine (Remeron) averaged about 40%. When subjects were removed who had other probable causes of sexual dysfunction, the results were even better.
Avatar n tn I also have been stressing and obsessing about post ssri sexual dysfunction. Im obsessing too much and its out of control I cant relax. Im seeing a new doc to get a different opinion and also scheduled a sex therapist appt. What medications other than Luvox or Celexa could I use for anxiety and ocd? I feel Luvox aint working neither was Celexa. My problem is I cant relax and Im always worrying.
