Causes of anorexia in elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Causes of anorexia in elderly

Avatar f tn Hey, I got the diagnosis of epilepsy. The doctusaid anorexia isn’t the cause as the problem is only in one small area of the brain. She said sometimes epilepsy happens and there is no known cause. My anorexia was awful, took over my whole life then it developed in bulimia and gradually I stopped. I still have cycles where I find myself slipping into staving myself, it’s a life long battle.
Avatar f tn There is also an eating disorders forum on here as well which might help, sadly I don't think youre going to get a lot of help with anorexia on the bipolar forums but its worth the question. I tend to be the same as leftcoastchick - doctor is the person you need, I know anorexia needs serious help and counselling but id also wonder if it is anorexia which has fairly specific symptoms and behaviours as opposed to not eating which is indeed possibly an attempt at suicide.
Avatar n tn t had any problems I would associate with carpal tunnel - all of the pain is in the joints of my fingers (worse in my right hand, I also draw/write a good portion of the day) and in my toes. The only thing that stops them from hurting temporarily is popping them, which is probably making it worse, but it's kind of a itch/scratch thing.
Avatar f tn pressure in side of head and face and now a burning soreness in left side of head (off and on) and feeling of coldness in left side of my face..does any of this sound like it? No temperature that i'm aware of....if in face i've had this for 9 months wouldn't it be much worse by now? Just so confused by my symptoms. I had a CT scan done back in Oct and nothing was found..also xrays of my sinuses..

I will advise you to speak to an adult. Hopefully, you could talk to your mom or dad. You need to get some professional help and support. You need to see a medical doctor just to check on your overall medical condition and growth.

144586 tn?1284666164 I see ninety ounces of fluid recommended for a hundred pound female. In an elderly patient you are lucky to get 28-32 ounces in them in the course of a day, even if you try youe best. Lack of hydration causes bowel impaction and increases the probability of a stroke, among other problems. So it is extremely important. One of my little girls is a hundred and eight years old. The super-elderly require care that is beyond the abilities of the average run-of-the-mill caregiver.
Avatar n tn Impaction is most common in inactive elderly people, but there are other causes beside inactivity.

Avatar f tn However, I am concerned that several tiny areas of nonspecific hemispheric white matter high signal with was stated to likely be resultant from microvascular ischemia. What do you think the potential causes might be in a relatively healthy 39 year old? I understand that this is generally a finding of the elderly. How harmful do you think these may be, espcecially regarding cognition? Just how worried should I be?
Avatar f tn t as extreme as many, but I have restricted my calories and lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time. In fact, it was during that period that my heart issues started. I would get flutters and arrhthymias and all sorts of scary stuff. It was during recovery, however, that my troubles were at their worst. My heart would start racing for no reason, often several times a day. Like you, my resting heart rate was also higher than it should have been.
Avatar f tn This happened twice more, before my thyroid finally just stopped working completely when I was 57 yrs old and I put on 30 lbs in 3 months, in spite of a physically demanding job, calorie restriction, etc. I've since developed insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome and gained an additional 20 pounds, in spite of a strict diet, tracking calories, exercise, etc.
Avatar f tn Other signs your teen may be experiencing depression include loss of interest in favorite activities, a change in sleep patterns and not wanting to attend school. Depression causes an imbalance in certain chemicals in the brain such as serotonin, which affects both mood and appetite. Depression, stress can cause a variety of negative effects on the body, including decrease or loss of appetite.
Avatar n tn My Mom is 92 years old. Has been living on her own in Elderly housing for 20 years. Her dementia consisted of repeating and repeating, forgetting who visited, etc. but went throughout her normal activities w/some services very well and very happiy. Always knew us but was starting to forget other people but after prompting she would be ok. 3 weeks ago she developed a very severe resistant UTI and then got c-dift (not sure how to spell that). Anyway ended up dilusional, confused, etc.

Avatar n tn All these cause dizziness when you get up from lying down position or when you change position that results in a change in the level of your head. Cervical spondylitis and ear problems also cause dizziness on changing the position of the neck. It is difficult to comment without examination. Possible causes have been enumerated for you. You can discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted.
Avatar f tn When I was at the psych. hospital in 1991 a good number of the people of the age range of 50+ had tardive dyskinesia. I knew very little about the condition then and I was told it was because of the amount of medication they had been on in the past when I finally got an "honest" answer from a psychiatrist there but even for their knowledge then that was untruthful. In reality it was the statistical probability of it ("5% per person per year with the typical antipsychotics, 2.
Avatar f tn t eat because you think you are fat, or you have a strong fear of gaining weight. Though technically, part of the clinical diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa is losing 15 percent or more of what your normal body weight should be, you do not need to be super thin in order to have an eating disorder. Most of what an eating disorder, such as Anorexia, consists of is the emotional/mental aspect..
1139187 tn?1355706647 getting older, exposure to heavy sound wave pressure (acutely or chronically) are most common causes. I have it from years of listening to music in headphones - it doesn't take as much sound as some think to damage the little hairs. Guns, firecrackers, playing orchestral instruments, etc. If the onset was more abrupt, and not immediately after taking up tuba lessons, trauma has been known to cause it. Car crashes, fistfights.
Avatar n tn Time between occurances range from a few days to a few months. Anyone have an idea of what the cause or remedy might be in this very elderly and frail person?
Avatar n tn There are common nutritional causes of dementia, as well as simple hypoxia, which should be ruled out before any psychiatric meds are administered - but this is rarely done. 1000ng a day of omega three, daily garlic, B-12 with folic acid sublingually every daym codliver oil every day, blueberrys, pomgranite juice (or pills), zinc, selenium, and tight control of blood sugar, for starters.
Avatar n tn Risperdal is a so-called "blacklisted" drug because of the high incidence of fatalities in the elderly. It is not approved nor appropriate for a use in an "agitated" eighty year old patient.
