440120 tn?1211724496 I've recently been to an allergist because of newly acquired allergies. I'm 43. I developed an allergy to cats in my 20s after having cats since I was a child. I got a new kitten and found that her saliva gave me hives. Since then I've always had a mild cat allergy. I was tested and found allergic to cats and dogs and a mild reaction to milk. Everything else was negative.
Avatar n tn Today in revisiting and playing with a couple of cats I developed allergies. When I went home I played with my cat and the allergies returned. What could have caused this and should I adopt a new cat if I somehow now have cat allergies?
Avatar f tn If not possible then, use reputable allergy avoidance products throughout your home. Wash your hands after having contact with the cat and keep pets out of the bedroom and avoid using carpeting, draperies and upholstered furniture in your home since allergens will collect there. If the symptoms persist then antihistaminics and allergy shots may be needed. Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.Kind regards.
Avatar n tn I'm a 44-yo female. Still recovering from severe acute bronchitis that lasted 3 months (started mid-October 08), I am now living cat-free and taking all my meds. For eighteen years I lived in the vicinity of an outdoor cat, smoked periodically (last puff 5.5 years ago) and suffered what I considered to be mild asthma. I used albuterol about 1/day (usually just one puff) because of feelings of tightness at the top of my bronchi.
Avatar n tn Hi Kiki, My cat was just dx'd with herpes in her eyes. For years, we too, thought it was allergies, but no. According to my vet, herpes is very common in cats. The way I figured out what was possibly going on with my cat was to google "feline herpes conjunctivitis." Some sites will give you pictures to look at and compare as well as descriptions. Discharge from the eyes have many possible dx's, but a simple blood test will confirm whether your kitty has herpes or not.
Avatar m tn Is it possible to rehome the cat and dog? Just wondering. If your girlfriend has had the cat since it was a kitten and her dog since it was a puppy, she would be very attached to them, so rehoming would not be an option. I wish you both well.
389974 tn?1331015242 I figured out the grain allergy after the vet confirmed that the cat had food allergies without too much trouble, because I had given her Fancy Feast with gravy, which she loves. Well, gravy usually has wheat flour in it to thicken it, and if I'm sensitive to gluten foods myself, then I reasoned that cats could be, too. And, since cats are true carnivores by nature, then it seemed reasonable to me that grains weren't supposed to be part of the cat's regular diet.
1474611 tn?1416632958 and almost ALL the time is due to food allergies, mainly grains in their food.(cheap additives). is your kitty fed dry food? these are the worst for allergies. the best possible advice I can give you is to change to a CANNED food with NO grains...kitty's don't like this very much b/c of course like us they love carbs...so its like going from french fries to broccoli, so you can't do it over night. do a 50/50 mix and gradually have him totally OFF dry carb loaded food.
Avatar f tn Sniffles, I think you got that name regarding the allergies eh? First off, if your friend don't mind, make sure the cats can be brushed. You might or might not know this, but it's not the hair that we are allergic to, it's the cat's saliva. They clean themselves with the saliva and then it gets on the hair. So it's not just the cat/s, it's anything the cat licks or gets the hair after it cleans itself on. Brushing the cat before and after visits will help.
874521 tn?1424116797 I agree, because I do the chemical free cleaning for myself already. I can see for myself that this has benefited Akira, too. My comment on your other post fits here, too. It's another funny Akira story. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Cats/WHY-do-cats-like-the-smell-of-bleach/show/1681374#post_7689129 I'm sure I speak for all the cat lovers on this forum when I say that cats are delightfully intriguing, highly intelligent unique individuals with minds of their own.
1116122 tn?1268496794 Hi, I get allergy shots for cat dander and pollens. Mine are covered under preventive care and are 90% covered. I had Rush and Rush day is kind of expensive. I take Xyzal (antihistamine) and Nasacort (steroid nasal spray) for allergies. Both are prescription medications. Benadryl works and it's OTC, but is really sedating and you have to take it several times a day. Tammy2009 is right about cat bathing.
Avatar f tn Allergies aren't hereditary but they can come and go. Some people outgrow allergies and others get them when they are older. My little brother had a lot of allergies when he was a kid (including pet dander) and outgrew them, while I didn't have them as a child but became more prone to them as an adult.
Avatar m tn t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.

2169449 tn?1358489923 I take Zyrtec 10 mg tablet daily im allergic to my cat/ seasonal allergies etc.
3170462 tn?1344717552 t mean to sound obtuse, but a specialist of what? Cats? Allergies? Cat allergies? Do these specialists have a title or a specific field of study that I can begin searching for one by?
362249 tn?1441315018 Sometimes as well -- depending on the house, you can mitigate your allergies if they aren't severe by the places you let your cat be (for instance, not letting the cat sleep in your bed with you, even hough that's a bummer).
Avatar f tn I was told with my first they don't develop allergies until the age of 1 or 2 yrs. I can't remember which. It's been 5 yrs ago lol. Having a cat will actually help build up their immune system.
Avatar n tn Hi there, I hope your cat started eating again? Mine did this in October. He stopped eating, we took him to the vet. The vet said he had allergies, gave him meds. My cat still didn't eat so we brought him back. It turned out that his allergies affected his pancreas and he developed secondary diabetes. We had to leave our cat at the animal hospital for one full week because he wouldn't eat. He was on IV. Once a cat stops eating, he/she loses the interest to eat.
Avatar f tn over the next couple weeks i started getting vertigo whenever it felt like my ear was starting to open it would last 2 hours to 10 hours, not getting any answers from my doctor, i went to the emergency rm.
7639611 tn?1392877261 Only a skin test (that tests for cat allergy) will rule out for sure whether it is cat allergy or not. If it is cat allergy, then if you do not take anti-allergic pills, the symptoms will resurface time and again. You can again start the medications (after consulting a doctor) to see if your symptoms subside. Also, you could live away from the cat for a day or two and see if your symptoms improve. However, it would be best to consult a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar n tn Isolating your pet to a crate with a white towel/sheet and giving an oral Capstar tablet from your vet and watching for any signs of fleas over the next 4 hrs can be a simple test your veterinarian can do for you in the office or you can do at home with your veterinarians assistance.
