Avatar n tn If nothing else, try to get a few fingers of NutriCal into your cat each day until he starts to show an interest in food again. It truly could mean the difference between life and death. There is a commonly held belief that an animal won't starve itself to death, and it will eat if it gets hungry enough. This is true for dogs, but with cats, if they wait too long and fatty liver disease sets in, it's very difficult to bring them back and it could mean they will die.
Avatar m tn I concur with everyone else here. One way to find out if food allergies is a problem, though, is to try a grain free canned food. There are other brands than what I've been using myself, but what I've been giving to Akira is a brand called Wellness, which is grain free. Cats should not eat dry kibble in the first place, because they get most of their water from their food. Remember, most cat breeds originated in desert areas of the earth.
Avatar n tn Otodectes, Cheyletiella, Scabies, etc, ringworm and other fungal infections, allergies (allergies to food can occur anytime in the life of a cat), bacterial skin infections, endocrine disorders and more. Ringworm, and some mites can be transmitted to people. Frontline does not treat mites. The topical: "Revolution" is for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and scabies, so it might be a good idea to switch to Revolution for a couple of months.
1474611 tn?1416632958 hi this is so very common anymore....and almost ALL the time is due to food allergies, mainly grains in their food.(cheap additives). is your kitty fed dry food? these are the worst for allergies. the best possible advice I can give you is to change to a CANNED food with NO grains...kitty's don't like this very much b/c of course like us they love carbs...so its like going from french fries to broccoli, so you can't do it over night.
Avatar m tn itching ears(if there are NO mites) are caused by allergies...and allergies are caused mainly by grains in the food, change to a GRAIN FREE CANNED food. NO dry food and these symptoms would most likely go away.. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Cats/CAT-Allergies/show/1967931 ps.I DO NOT agree with the so called natural remedies mentioned, these can be ingested when a cat licks themselves and many products like these are dangerous...
652407 tn?1300737199 We are here to help. My cat and I have been through a lot due to his food allergies. It is not fun for the owner and very uncomfortable for kitty. And sometimes finding the right food choices isn't an easy task. Her colon is most likely very irritated. Is she an anxious cat? Jumpy? Nervous?
Avatar n tn What kind of allergies does your cat have? If she's allergic to food, you may want to try a natural diet. It's a hassle to deal with raw meat but it pays off, there are recipes for that online. You can make a whole batch and freeze the rest and feed it to her gradually. It's also cheaper than buying cat food. If it's not food allergies, you may want to try a natural(raw) diet anyway- it will raise her immunity and perhaps relieve her allergies.
Avatar n tn m not no expert, but my one cat did same thing and turned out to be food allergies, she had mangled coat, then pull her hair out, since on correct diet, the problem resolved.Good luck to you!
Avatar f tn As a matter of fact, there is a pet allergy specialist in Orange County. I used to bring my cat there (she had similar problems). I think they were in Tustin, but to be honest with you, it's been a long time and I can't remember the name of the place.... OK, I just googled it, and I'm 99% sure this is the place: Animal Dermatology Clinic 2965 Edinger Ave Tustin, CA 92780 (949) 936-0066 In the meantime, maybe you could try an oatmeal bath to help relieve some of the itching.
Avatar f tn They get fed during the day but I cannot leave food for them a night because my female cat has really bad allergies and has to eat a special vet food and my male cat cannot eat it. So.. Tips?
Avatar m tn Greetings! My name is Tom and I suffer from severe non- food related allergies. Although they can be controlled, I find that my allergic reaction to dogs is so strong that drugs have little effect. The obvious solution is to take immunotherapy (allergy shots). However, when I contacted my allergist's secretary she said that they do no have one. I would like to rebut her claim, but in order to do so I need proof that this exists.
5347058 tn?1381188426 sensitive commonly to a preservative or ingredient in dry kibble type food. grain allergies are common in cats and most cat foods are full of unnecessary grains just b/c they are 'cheap' fillers for the manufacturer, they do absolutely nothing for the diet!!! there are some 'grain free' diets on the market that may be a worth a trial. EVO, Wellness and Natures Variety are a few. cats can also suffer from environmental allergies....such as what you decide with your kitty.....
1565420 tn?1304572548 If your cat is constipated, wet food will help to hydrate the bowel. Your vet can give appropriate treatment once definitive diagnosis is made.
1450718 tn?1284923495 hi and welcome to our cat forum. I will include a rather lengthy thread for you to read, as you will see its a common and complex problem. One culprit is the litter, thats the easiest place to start, change that, particularly if its a high scented one....go to unscented or preferably even a totally different type. If feeding dry food stop and buy canned food, dry food has many more chemicals that can contribute to allergies. can be also an allergy to fleas, ticks, dust pollen...as with my cat.
1590008 tn?1297040041 d like more info on this problem, click on the highlighted word ALLERGIES to further the discussion of what I mentioned to you.....IBD stands for irritable bowel disease, but I don't think this is what your kitty has hers appears to be more of a skin related issue and wide spread thats why I'm thinking allergies?...just read all the site and see what you think, can also be inhaled allergies associated with the new apartment.....
2109733 tn?1334130838 can also be due to food allergies(grains) environmental allergies (sprays etc.) flea bite dermatitis, and possibly even hyperthyroidism when its so extensive...best to get kitty a good Vet exam and some bloodwork done, poor little guy sounds like he is really suffering..
Avatar n tn If your cat is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely. Options to treat allergies are to continue to treat symptoms with medications (okay if symptoms only occur occasionally and your cat only needs 1-2 steroid injections per year), or to identify and treat the underlying cause.
Avatar f tn I have a cat that is almost 18 years old. He has always been a scar that hides from everyone. He has been hanging out with us and around the dogs and is really stuffy. He has a lot of snot in his nose, it is hard for him to breathe, he gags and coughs and has runny eyes. My husband just thinks he is old with allergies but I'm concerned. I dissolve his food in water and crush it up and he drinks and eats fine. Not sure what to do? Can I give him something for the allergies?
Avatar m tn hi and welcome I hope we can help you and kitty both. I will try to answer your question. but to start with I want to comment on two things.....1. don't use SALT, this is extremely bad for cats. 2. fish is okay but NOT tuna...tuna is the worst, and I can't remember all the reasons...higher in mercury for one...just trust me, I found this out b/c my own kitty loves tuna and read reports about it being the worst. so I had to d/c this one.
Avatar f tn Now she has only gotten an upset stomach (mucus and urge to go) maybe once. I would like to know what would be the best food to give her and if any vitamins should be given in addition (can you also recommend one). I was concerned since she was getting older and that is why I am now considering a new diet but I am confused to which of all the products in the market is the best food. She behaves like a very healthy and active dog otherwise. Her apetite is fine too.
Avatar n tn I don't know what the discharge is or what it means. I had to try a few different kinds of cat foods before I found one that my cat likes that she isn't allergic to. My cat is allergic to grains.
5655568 tn?1371757104 if he is on chicken try beef or venison, chicken is also a huge culprit in allergies because it is the common base of nearly ALL pet foods. I had to switch one of mine to fish for awhile, but fish isn't good to feed long term...but it may be necessary for a trial period if you can't get him to eat something other than chicken....
2083449 tn?1381354708 com/Carlson-Labs-L-Lysine-Amino-Acid-Powder-100-g/13608 like I mentioned before, its likely food allergies that are causing her to be so itchy....are you feeding a dry grain based diet??????
Avatar m tn if you are going to change the food also read on that site HOW TO TRANSITION from dry food to wet.....you have to do so slowly, most cats don't lke carb free cans b/c they sure don't taste as good without all the additives so it take a slow transition. cats also get diarrhea when their food is rapidly changed. I will gvie you another site to copy and paste, read all the signs and causes of allergies...
