Avatar f tn Hello, Cat allergen, the allergy causing material from cats, is not cat hair, but rather a protein present in the dander and saliva of cats. These allergens become airborne as microscopic particles, which when inhaled into the nose or lungs can produce allergic symptoms. You can confirm whether you are allergic to cats by getting allergy testing done.Skin tests and blood tests like RAST are done for this purpose.Pls consult an allergist and get them done.
Avatar f tn As you had skin symptoms after coming in contact with the cat,so allergy to cats cannot be ruled out.In the last trimester of pregnancy, cat allergens cannot pose a direct risk to your baby but it may effect fetal well being by causing allergy symptoms like skin symptoms, hives, itching, respiratory symptoms to life threatening anaphylaxis in the mother. I would suggest that you get rid of the cat as far as possible. If not possible then, use reputable allergy avoidance products throughout your home.
Avatar n tn Allergy testing starts with a thorough history to uncover what things may be causing your allergy symptoms. These are called allergens. When it is not clear what allergens are causing your symptoms blood testing is often the next step. This will help to focus the list of possible allergens. With blood testing it is possible to have false positives. So blood testing is more likely to show that you are allergic to something that you may not really react to.
531835 tn?1215615037 There is also a product that I have started to use called allerpet-c and it works wonders!! http://www.allerpet.com/ Try asking at the pet stores around you (the one I work at does carry it but it sits on a bottom shelf below the shampoo so not very many people know about it). I would also make sure you ask someone that has been there for a while. They do have research from third party that the solution actually denatures the protein of the cat dander.
1116122 tn?1268496794 I have no intention of getting rid of my cat, however, since this is the best my allergies have been around pets in years. Other than Zyrtec, are there allergy shots covered by insurance that I could take, or other allergy medications that are prescription? My insurance company stopped covering Allegra, which was perfect (bummer). Thanks for your help in advance.
118225 tn?1278654940 I was just curious if there was a long term relief for cat allergies. I have heard many people say there is a simple shot to take them away...but wonder if this is true, and how often the shot would be needed. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn I had cat hair allergy and it is much reduced now
Avatar f tn He used to suffer when anywhere near cats but for some reason they picked up a stray cat and wouldn’t you know it, ever since then these symptoms started and have been getting worse. My theory is that the constant assault of the cat dander is causing an autoimmune issue which is making his glands swollen which in turn are pushing on the nerves in his should which go into his arms. Is this possible? Is there a way to determine this to be the case short of getting rid of the cat?
Avatar f tn My husband hit 40 and got allergies to grass, horses, cats and tree pollen. He had never had allergies before. The allergist told him it's pretty common for one's reactions to things like that to change in the course of one's life.
874521 tn?1424116797 a very good article abt household allergens and our pets. since we get so many posters needing help with this. http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2009/12/23/environmental-allergies-and-your-pet.
603223 tn?1220007818 It occurs as a result of a hypersensitivity response of the nose to materials called allergens. Common allergens include pollen, dust, house dust mite, animal danders (cat, dog, rodent, horse) and mould. You cannot eliminate all the allergens from your environment but you can identify the allergens to which you are allergic by skin ***** tests or blood test like RAST.In this a small amount of allergen is introduced in the skin of the forearm and the response of the skin is observed.
Avatar m tn I began taking Zyrtec for my allergies. On March 13th I got sick. I got dizzy and nauseated, throwing up, skin flushed, sensations of having a fever without temperature, thick clear mucous, bright light sensitivity, sensitivity to loud sounds, rib muscles pulling, sensitivity to cold, pain in upper left abdomen, sharp chest pains, and tremors. A week later I went into emergency thinking I was having a heart attack. Everything seemed normal with my heart and I was discharged.
Avatar f tn The first step should be for you, to the best of your ability, to avoid all allergens or reduce your exposure to all allergens to which you may, on the basis of experience or allergy testing, be allergic to. That would include both indoor and outdoor allergens and the concentration of the latter may be reduced with air-conditioning.
Avatar f tn Hello, If there is itchiness and watering of the eyes then the eye symptoms can be due to an allergen. Allergens include pollen, mold, dust and pet dander. These allergens, when exposed to initiate immune mediated reactions which will result in the symptoms you experience. The allergic history usually runs in families. You can consult an allergy specialist, who after doing some skin tests; will be able to specify some allergens.
Avatar m tn When the filters do not work properly, allergens may be released into the air, causing typical allergy symptoms, such as watery eyes, runny nose, and wheezing. Wash shower curtains, bathroom tiles, and grout regularly and use a dehumidifier in your house. Also remove drapes, feather pillows, upholstered furniture, non-washable comforters and soft toys. Replace carpets with linoleum or wood. Vacuum (with HEPA filtered vacuum cleaners) soft furniture and curtains as well as floor.
Avatar m tn Even if you do not have previous allergic reaction to the cat, the cat can still indirectly cause your allergies to flare up. Aside from possible reaction to the shampoo used by the animal, other allergen such as pollen, mold, and other allergens may be responsible and these can stick to the cat's fur.Antihistamine medication may help provide relief. If it persists, you may need to have this checked by your doctor for proper evaluation. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn told me everyone is suffering horribly with Mountain Cedar allergies, and the pollen is worse this year than it ever has been in West Texas. I live 150 miles west of Dallas. I have even had pains hit my joints but that finally stopped. Someone told me that allergies can manifest in many ways with all kinds of symptoms. Is it possible to feel nausea and feel bad like I did this a.m. from mt. cedar pollen?
365714 tn?1292199108 After calling the neurologist again, she suspects I had a severe allergic reaction to the outside allergens (tree pollen) and to the allergens inside (cat dander.) Now I have a referral to see an allergist. Now I am really worried because I don't like the thought of not being able to cuddle with our cats anymore, having to keep them out of my room, or have to rehome them altogether... Trying not to panic. I will try to rule out other allergies before having to resort to that...
5347058 tn?1381188426 sensitive commonly to a preservative or ingredient in dry kibble type food. grain allergies are common in cats and most cat foods are full of unnecessary grains just b/c they are 'cheap' fillers for the manufacturer, they do absolutely nothing for the diet!!! there are some 'grain free' diets on the market that may be a worth a trial. EVO, Wellness and Natures Variety are a few. cats can also suffer from environmental allergies....such as what you decide with your kitty.....
Avatar f tn Lately I have been experiencing allergies like I never have before. Most people have allergies as kids, then grow out of them, however for me, it seems to be the opposite. I had little to no allergies that I recall and now.... EVERYTHING, or at least it seems. They keep getting worse and worse every year and I don't know what is next! Mostly, my eyelids will become very swollen, usually in the morning after sleeping. I'm thinking this is cosmetics related, but I'm not sure...
Avatar n tn I was hoping we would have come away with more information, and an actual diagnoses. To add to the mix we just adopted a cat a few weeks ago. My husband and I both have pet allergies, but he's never experienced anything this severe before. So now we're not sure what the cause is. I'm worried that this will happen again, and am looking for more answers before we consider giving away our cat. Any help, or insights would be appreciated!
Avatar f tn This test is painless, in which a very small amount of certain allergens are pricked into the surface of your skin. If you have allergies, just a little swelling will occur where the allergen was introduced. Reactions occur within about 15 minutes. If needed more sensitive intradermal tests will be used in which a small amount of allergen is injected within the skin. Based on this he may plan for immunotherapy. Regards.
