Avatar n tn First of all, are you 100% sure that the wound is because she keeps scratching? If she is, you have to make sure she doesn't have fleas or allergies. Allergy causes a cat to scratch constantly, and it may be caused by anything, from food to wool, to any substance or flea collars. The cat will immediately start scratching until the skin gets irritated. Don't put cortizone on the wound. Triple antibiotics will help keep the wound from drying out and prevent infection of the wound.
Avatar f tn I looked up the cat community - best to go there I believe. http://www.medhelp.

Avatar m tn My cat Mikku is a 3 year old male cat. I adopted him from a shelter. Initially he was weak and after vet consultation he put on weight. In the mean while he developed some boils on his neck area. Dr. advised me to apply Kiskin lotion. But eventually Mikku scratched the boils and it converted into scratch wounds. Its been 2 months now and guessing it as an infection Dr. gave a course of anti-biotic. During the course it was better but after the course again its come back to same situation.
Avatar m tn People with allergies have symptoms such as runny eyes and sneezing, but animals with allergies more commonly show symptoms such as scratching, licking of the feet, and recurrent skin and ear infections. Therapeutic options include treatment of allergic symptoms with topical and oral medications, and allergy testing and desensitization injections to treat the underlying cause of the itching.
Avatar n tn Otodectes, Cheyletiella, Scabies, etc, ringworm and other fungal infections, allergies (allergies to food can occur anytime in the life of a cat), bacterial skin infections, endocrine disorders and more. Ringworm, and some mites can be transmitted to people. Frontline does not treat mites. The topical: "Revolution" is for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and scabies, so it might be a good idea to switch to Revolution for a couple of months.
Avatar n tn A number of very different possibilities come to mind but without additional information, I can't hazard a guess. When you say he has been scratching it for years, do you mean scratching above his eyes with his back claws or excessively grooming that area with his front paws? What is causing you to think it is not painful but itchy? What are you dowsing him with for fleas? What kind of bushes is he playing in? Is he also scratching at his ears?
Avatar n tn My 2 year old cat recently started scratching at both of his cheeks until they bleed. It began around the time I noticed he had gotten fleas but thought it was odd that he would only be scratching at his face rather than his tail head like most cats. I took him to the vet and he asked me if I had changed his food recently, but he's been on the same diet of solid friskies wet and purina indoor dry, for he's an indoor cat.
Avatar n tn Some animals are so sensitive to flea bites that all it takes is one bite and they are off and scratching. I have a cat like this. He just turned 16 (today, in fact, HAPPY BIRTHDAY EUGENE!) and for his whole life, I KNOW when he has come into contact with a flea because he will just start to get real ratty looking, he'll have a scab or two on his neck from scratching, and upon inspection he has NO FLEAS.
3149845 tn?1506627771 Small itchy fluid filled blisters are commonly seen in dyshidrotic eczema. People under stress, allergies are more prone for developing this condition. Scratching makes the condition worse. Try taking anti-itch medicines by mouth, such as hydroxyzine or loratidine which can help you stop scratching. In scabies cause by tiny mites there are itchy red bumps on the fingers. It is an extremely contagious condition. Seeking a dermatologist’s opinion for exact diagnosis and treatment will help.
Avatar f tn Hi. My old cat, Bootsie is 13 and has been scratching herself raw for the past week or so. She's an inside cat so there are no fleas. If there were I would be one big flea bite. She's been eating the same food since we got her @ 3 months old. Right now I try to get her the IAMS adult 11+. I don't have a car so I have to go to the closest supermarket. Sometimes they have it but mostly not so I get her the oldest I can find which is 6+.
Avatar m tn 1. If cat scratch someone with HIV and after that scratch you, virus would have been deadon animal's nails imidietly. 2. If cat have FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) she can not pass it on you, because it is ONLY feline and not human virus.
Avatar f tn Some vets will recommend benadryl to cats with allergies. Usually, those allergies are presented by a cat scratching, not a swollen throat and paw. Talk to the vet first. You need not make an apointment. Call the vet and ask him if 1 ml one or twice a day is good for her. Good luck with your kitty.
4658567 tn?1364142123 How can I get my cats to stop scratching?? It's driving me crazy! I have had my female Mia for 5 years. She is spayed and never really had too much of a problem with her scratching. We lived with my mom for almost a year. She did not scratch on anything at my moms but my moms car scratched inside the house. A couple months after we moved I got my daughter a kitten named Popcorn. Got him fixed when he was old enough.
Avatar n tn The fat lip also is commonly secondarily infected with bacteria, so I would recommend a 2-3 week course of antibiotics if not already done. The three types of allergies are parasite (fleas, mites), food allergy, and pollen/dust allergies. If your cat is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely.
Avatar m tn t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.
Avatar f tn Anyone out there know how to teach a cat how to use a scratching post. I think I've bought every kind out there from carpeted scratching post, rope wrapped, cardboard box - I can't seem to teach our cat to use it. I've even tried sprinkling some catnip on them and nothing seems to help. Instead she seems to be scratching at everything else in the house except for what I've bought for her. Any suggestions from anyone?
681148 tn?1437661591 I'm not sure about the dosage on the other antihistamines, but I like your suggestion about giving the Zyrtec to her everday for now. It's easier figuring out allergy medicine for myself, because the dosages for the antihistamines are the right dosages for humans. But, I definitely don't want to give the wrong dosage to my kitty. So, until I know more info about other antihistamines for cats, I really don't want to give her anything but the Zyrtec.
10823174 tn?1413080834 It would be impossible for us to diagnose your cat, one because we are not doctors and two, a cat needs to be seen and tested for accurate diagnosis. Will be awaiting your post on the outcome.
Avatar f tn Is there anything I can do to stop him from scratching when I am not around. He is the cutest cat , but is becoming very unattractive because of all the missing patches. ANy recommendations? I feel so bad that he scratches and has to be scolded when caught scratching.
5817271 tn?1374792599 m 905 certain its food allergies....particularly to GRAINS...most cat foods are full of grains because they are cheap..much cheaper than meat...and most cats are intolerant to grains.. even if her diet hasn't changed, like us humans allergies take a while to develop and some will be more affected than others.. also dry kibble has tons of preservatives and other chemicals that canned food doesn't, even has mites due to long storage after bagging.
Avatar m tn t feel like skin anymore it feels like whats underneath the skin now because of all the scratching. its near impossible to sleep at night because of the scratching. I have seen doctors, dermatologists, and naturopaths and all and up saying the same thing "I have no idea what this is." I was out on prednizone pills and steroid creams and they work wonders! My entire body clears up almost immediately.
Avatar n tn I have a 2.5 year old doberman and for the past year or so he has scratched/chewed his stomach and legs extremely badly to the point he has almost no hair on his stomach and his nipples have become enlarged from all the scratching. We've gotten allergy tests that havent given any results. The vet has only suggested putting him on prednisone, which when we do give it to him makes him gain a lot of weight and sleep all day. Has anyone else experienced this?
