Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies living with cats

cat-allergies

Avatar m tn I've developed severe allergies since moving in with my girlfriend who has a cat and a dog. So severe that I am constantly sick whenever home, find myself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air (asthma - I have an inhaler), and hacking up a lung in the mornings. We've tried vacuuming more and bathing the animals but it being a small town home, living in close quarters, it does not seem to help. Now we are looking at me moving out and starting allergy shots.
Avatar f tn I am currently 32 weeks pregnant with my first child and have been living with my partners family. His mom rescued a stray cat about 3 months ago even though there was a possibility that the cat could harm me or my baby. Pregnant women aren't suppose to come in contact with cat urine because it can affect an unborn child. Also, being that it was a stray I thought it was completey irresponsible for her to bring it in the house without having seen a vet first.
Avatar f tn so animals and me go together My dad grew up with a cat allergy he couldnt be in a house where cats lived...he would get itchy, cough and sneeze but he grew out of it, because we now have four and they don't bother him...the last two years or so whenever i am near the cats i get the same symptoms my eyes water, cough, stuffy nose its like a sudden cold. Is it possible that i have received the same allergy my dad had? are allergics hereditary?
3170462 tn?1344717552 t mean to sound obtuse, but a specialist of what? Cats? Allergies? Cat allergies? Do these specialists have a title or a specific field of study that I can begin searching for one by?
168348 tn?1379357075 We had a cat for 20 yrs and who died 2 yrs ago and my dd's asthma got better (hmmmmmm) .... stil there but doing really well except for illness. We were thinking of trying a hypoallergenic kitty but probably won't at this time. She tested many yrs ago very very slightly allergic via skin tests but reacts to other people's cats and needs Benadryl (itchy eyes, but no asthma) .... although living with our cat she never had that problem so we really just don't know.
Avatar f tn How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!
Avatar n tn Today in revisiting and playing with a couple of cats I developed allergies. When I went home I played with my cat and the allergies returned. What could have caused this and should I adopt a new cat if I somehow now have cat allergies?

391038 tn?1298737386 t handle living without litter mate or other cats. He finally took off, and is living with neighbors who have older cats to keep him company. He had almost completely licked the fur on back legs off: was on Wellness kitten wet food.....so should have been thriving. If he were mine, I would probably take to vet to be sure allergies were not culprit. All you can do after that is give him lots of love: I know there are many cat owners who can afford to get another cat after one dies.
Avatar f tn hey guys, I'm 4 weeks pregnant and the whole time I've been getting sinus allergies from mine and my partners dogs!!
Avatar f tn hi Pam,,, I'm no expert, just another copd sufferer and a cat mommy. IMO there shouldn't be a reason that your cats are causing copd itself......cat allergies will cause asthma flares but asthma and copd aren't the same...copd is a disease in itself and not a symptom. I will send you a website incase it will help answer some questions.............oh I sure hope you won't have to give up the rescue org.
Avatar n tn However, you can become allergic to them years after, I had my one cat for 10 years before any allergies and 15 years before I developed asthma. If you do get one, try to keep it out of your daughters room so she has a good 8 hours without breathing in tons of cat dander.
541150 tn?1306033843 ve always had cats right along with the babies and never had a problem with allergies. IMO allergies have an increased chance of developing when a baby has never been exposed to animals....since their bodies have never had the opportunity to develop antibodies. You may need to have a mother son talk with Abby tho about sleeping with you, this will really be hard for Abby to understand for awhile...
Avatar m tn Sounds like your brother needs to build a relationship with them by giving them treats and playing with them with cat toys. Otherwise, maybe he needs to move out! Good luck and best wishes!
Avatar n tn I'm so confused! My cat has allergies, and the vet has given her steroids, but that only helps for a little bit and I don't want to keep giving her that. I got out a healthy alternative book for cats and it says to give her garlic, and for her to breathe eucalyptus oil. I looked online at other sources which say garlic and eucalyptus oil are toxic to cats. I don't know what to do! I don't want to kill my cat, but she needs some relief! How do I know whats the truth? Help please!!
Avatar m tn Okay so I live with Animal Dander allergies. When I am around common animals that have dander such as dogs, cats, bunnies or hamsters, I begin to develop a slight rash and my eyes swollen and I have an asthma attack. Well, I was around a cat the other day. I was holding it and petting it and stroking it. My left eye slightly swollen and my upper arm had 2 bumbs...I had no asthma. I am usually worse around dogs...but are my allergies starting to get better?
Avatar f tn I was told with my first they don't develop allergies until the age of 1 or 2 yrs. I can't remember which. It's been 5 yrs ago lol. Having a cat will actually help build up their immune system.
Avatar f tn Usually people who are allergic to cats are really allergic to the pollen that can collect on their fur. So it's more like a hay-fever kind of allergy than an allergy to the cat. If you are itching because you work with someone who has cats...maybe it's the perfume she is wearing. I noticed you joined the cat forum, so welcome.

440120 tn?1211724496 I've recently been to an allergist because of newly acquired allergies. I'm 43. I developed an allergy to cats in my 20s after having cats since I was a child. I got a new kitten and found that her saliva gave me hives. Since then I've always had a mild cat allergy. I was tested and found allergic to cats and dogs and a mild reaction to milk. Everything else was negative.
5347058 tn?1381188426 sensitive commonly to a preservative or ingredient in dry kibble type food. grain allergies are common in cats and most cat foods are full of unnecessary grains just b/c they are 'cheap' fillers for the manufacturer, they do absolutely nothing for the diet!!! there are some 'grain free' diets on the market that may be a worth a trial. EVO, Wellness and Natures Variety are a few. cats can also suffer from environmental allergies....such as what you decide with your kitty.....
Avatar f tn My husband hit 40 and got allergies to grass, horses, cats and tree pollen. He had never had allergies before. The allergist told him it's pretty common for one's reactions to things like that to change in the course of one's life.
Avatar n tn He has not been sick or been around anyone sick. We have 2 cats that we have had for 3 years with no problems but I'm hoping he has not developed allergies to them. He went to his grandparents over the weekend and they don't have any cats but the cough DID NOT get better. He also coughs just as much at school where there is no animals.
