Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies asthma

cat-allergies

Avatar n tn However, you can become allergic to them years after, I had my one cat for 10 years before any allergies and 15 years before I developed asthma. If you do get one, try to keep it out of your daughters room so she has a good 8 hours without breathing in tons of cat dander.
Avatar m tn When I am around common animals that have dander such as dogs, cats, bunnies or hamsters, I begin to develop a slight rash and my eyes swollen and I have an asthma attack. Well, I was around a cat the other day. I was holding it and petting it and stroking it. My left eye slightly swollen and my upper arm had 2 bumbs...I had no asthma. I am usually worse around dogs...but are my allergies starting to get better?
Avatar f tn How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!
Avatar f tn I had cat hair allergy and it is much reduced now
Avatar f tn ve heard allergies can be inherited. My dad was allergic to grass as well and highly allergic to cat dander. Asthma triggers can be challenging but knowing what they are and avoiding them as much as possible, I think , is the key. Also, for me, cigarette smoke is a trigger too. I wish you well.
Avatar m tn I've developed severe allergies since moving in with my girlfriend who has a cat and a dog. So severe that I am constantly sick whenever home, find myself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air (asthma - I have an inhaler), and hacking up a lung in the mornings. We've tried vacuuming more and bathing the animals but it being a small town home, living in close quarters, it does not seem to help. Now we are looking at me moving out and starting allergy shots.
Avatar n tn Do you have a good mattress cover to prevent dust mites? I know my asthma is worse when my allergies are acting up. Do you have any food allergies? Have you considered allergy shots for pets, etc? Hopefully this helps. Good luck fellow asthma sufferer!
Avatar f tn I currently take Xyzal and Nasacort for allergies and medication for asthma (Singulair and Symbicort). I'm also taking allergy shots for cat dander and grass pollens. When I go running by wooded areas I get a horrible runny nose. My runny nose goes away about 10-15 minutes after I get inside from my run. I'm wondering if it could be from allergies or if it could be from something else. Thanks.
1116122 tn?1268496794 I have no intention of getting rid of my cat, however, since this is the best my allergies have been around pets in years. Other than Zyrtec, are there allergy shots covered by insurance that I could take, or other allergy medications that are prescription? My insurance company stopped covering Allegra, which was perfect (bummer). Thanks for your help in advance.
Avatar f tn It could be allergies acting up your asthma. You do need to tell someone so they can monitor it. There shouldn't be a reason why you need to go to the hospital unless you have a sever asthma attack.
Avatar n tn Postnasal drip, asthma, allergies (which can cause both of those problems), GERD, enlarged adenoids/tonsils can all plan a role. Try over the counter cough medicine for 4-5 days and see if that helps (did nothing for my allergy/post nasal drip/asthma cough). Vicks vapour rub was the only thing that would let me sleep for a while back around christmas (before I was diagnosed).
168348 tn?1379357075 We had a cat for 20 yrs and who died 2 yrs ago and my dd's asthma got better (hmmmmmm) .... stil there but doing really well except for illness. We were thinking of trying a hypoallergenic kitty but probably won't at this time. She tested many yrs ago very very slightly allergic via skin tests but reacts to other people's cats and needs Benadryl (itchy eyes, but no asthma) .... although living with our cat she never had that problem so we really just don't know.
Avatar n tn For me (not a doctor) my allergies are the strongest factor for my asthma. My asthma isn't that bad if you take away my allergies. Each person is different, however you asked "Do you think allergies could play a role?" It is absolutely possible.
7639611 tn?1392877261 Only a skin test (that tests for cat allergy) will rule out for sure whether it is cat allergy or not. If it is cat allergy, then if you do not take anti-allergic pills, the symptoms will resurface time and again. You can again start the medications (after consulting a doctor) to see if your symptoms subside. Also, you could live away from the cat for a day or two and see if your symptoms improve. However, it would be best to consult a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar m tn thanks for your reply.. but my main concern is why can't I breathe?? would a cold do this? would my cat allergies do this? did my asthma come back after 10 yrs because I smoked too much?
Avatar n tn Moving around and being active even can trigger tightness and shortness of breath with asthma. Allergies can also be triggering it, but I would talk to your allergist how much since you said your only slightly allergic. I am severely allergic to cats and dogs off the charts, have asthma, and currently have a dog and a cat. So far I can't tell whether they are setting my asthma off or not. Sometimes our allergies aren't the trigger and asthma is more intrinsic.
967947 tn?1258873459 I am not taking anything for it. Three family members from my fathers side have asthma and alot of them have bad allergies. When I first got sick my doctor thought asthma could be a possibility and prescribed me Albuterol. This medication only helped for one hour so my doctor told me to stop the medication. He told me a good amount of my symptoms are anxiety. I have had tests that came back normal. I never had low iron until I started feeling sick. Last time my iron was a little low 7.
Avatar n tn Should I worry or does she have year round allergies?? I love my cat and take her to the vet anytime needed but Im tired of going if nothing is going to be done. $2000 is alot in less than 2 yrs and have it not all taken care of at once. I need a good vet but Ive been 2 3 diff ones in my area and live in a small area.
9552239 tn?1404989880 I have allergies too and I have asthma. I wish I could tell you when you feel better and feel normal again. You said you had the severe reaction over a week ago. Glad to hear that you are feeling quite a bit better. My best guess would be that it will be a gradual process of feeling better. I am glad you are now carrying a new epipen and a medical bracelet. I wish you well.
Avatar m tn In traditional Chinese medicine theory, asthma is clearly differentiated between the actual attacks and the periods between attacks. When the attacks are happening, this is considered to be an acute, Excess condition, and the objective is to disperse the Excess and stop the attack. Wind, a non-substantial pathogenic factor, lodges in the bronchi and combines with Cold or Heat pathogenic factors to cause bronchospasms.
Avatar f tn Defintely the right choice to get rid of the cat (coming from someone with two cats and cat allergies), she is too young to have to deal with severe allergies. Do as much prevention with the dust allergies as well and hopefully the severity of the reactions with colds/flu will decrease.
1232362 tn?1333135406 I have had bad cat allergies to cat hair- it's probably not a good idea to have cats if you have asthma or other lung diseases
Avatar m tn Dear Dr. Dietrich, I started treatment 7 weeks ago pegintron 2b and ribavarin. My concern is the breathing problems i have been having and constant ear clogging. I have had chest xrays, cat scans on the lungs and everything is ok. last lab work didnt' show any king of anemia.
Avatar n tn You need to ask for full pulmonary function tests - including a methacholine challenge test. This gives a much better idea how your lungs behave and whether or not asthma is the correct diagnosis. Another way is to give asthma meds a trial run and see if they help your symptoms - if they greatly help, it is probably asthma. If they do nothing - need to look into something else. I disagree with banshee86 - there is a large spectrum of severity in asthma and something is it not clear.
