I'm not a physician, so please do check with your doctor about the information you read here & other places. There is a complex balancing needed for us to maintain blood sugar levels within the range our doctors have recommended. In general, exercise & insulin bring our sugar levels down.

The doctor tells me I have diabetes and must take precautions which will effect my lifestyle and intake of sugars. I would like to get a second opinion as I had a 6.5 on my HBA1C three months ago. Avatar m tn Your pancreas is not dead! Diabetes type 1 is when the immune system destroys part of the pancreas that produces insulin, but leaves the rest perfectly intact. Type 2 is when nothing is destroyed, but for some reason, you're either not producing enough insulin, or the insulin that you produce is not efficient enough. There's a clear distinction between the two, as type 1 is autoimmune 'disease'. In all cases the pancreas is still performing all the other functions correctly.

Avatar n tn I am not quite sure what your question is about concerning the alcohol. Are you asking which to drink first, or asking what the effects might be? The answer is that alcohol lowers the liver's ability to release emergency sugars that all people store in their livers in case they haven't eaten in a long time and glucose levels drop (which can happen to non-diabetics as well as to diabetics, but which can be life-threatening to the type 1 diabetic).

Avatar m tn I had a test on this very topic today. On the Zone Diet (at least according to my textbook) the good thing was that this diet encourages mostly healthy foods. You eat the right mix of fats, carbs and protein and that keeps you trim and healthy by lowering insulin.
