Carbamazepine is the generic name for tegretol with dose 600-1600mg. This is one of 3 most classical drugs for bipolarity used especially in Britain (lithium, tegretol, depakote) and have become standard for half a century. In the USA they don't use it often because of its interactions with other drugs. They substitute it for oxcarbazepine (trileptal) 1200-2400mg. The latrter has less interactivity with other drugs.
Were you taking the XR Venaflaxine or the standard? My insurance only want to cover the non extended release generic but I tried it for 6 months. I was annoyed at having to take it twice a day but for $37.50 for 90 days vs $90 for 90 days I was willing to do it. Problem was it gives me mild nausea when I took it with a big meal and severe nausea if I took it on an empty stomach or even with with a smaller meal. I just couldn't tolerate it so I went back to the generic XR capsules.
Whereas 6 x 200mg of Carbamazepine used to keep things relatively under control, now I am at 17 x 200mg (3,400mg daily) and still suffer from unimaginable pain.
My question is:
What is the most effective dosing schedule should I use for Carbamazepine?
Would that be 4 pills 4 times per day? Or perhaps 5 pills 3 times per day? Or 3 pills 5 times per day (i.e. - Getting up in the middle of the night for a dose.)?
I feel right now my schedule is rather willy-nilly...
True, there is no generic for XR (extended rlease), however, there is a generic for just Effexor and it is called Venlafaxine in tablet form. You may have to take more than one tablet per day to get the same extended effects, I don't know. Also, have you thought about getting your doctor to write you a 90 day prescription and purchasing mail order from Canada? It is so much cheaper. You can pull up Canadian Pharmacy on the web and get prices for generic and name brand.
I just went through a terrible experience where the doctor took me off carbamazepine XR and changed me to oxcarbamazepine.... my seizures increased and worst of all, I lost my husband, and now my family accuses me of being incompetent. My entire life is lost. I lost my home, my marriage. The doctors changed me back to carbamazepine and increased the dosage and the seizures have stopped. I have tried every anticonvulsant on the market today. Carbamazepine works the best.

Yes, I agree w/ the generic thing. They offered me generic, but I refused. I hope you feel better. I know exactly how your are 'feeling'... I have to say that I feel better on Effexor XR and my family also sees a big difference. I can tolerate things much better, and will ask to go to 75 in a couple weeks. I think this dose is ok, but I need just abit more. Deep breaths.. thanks for all...
Barbara- I tapered Effexor with a lot of difficulty. When I went off for two days, I was nuts, crying all the time and having the brain zaps. So, my psych put me on prozac for a few weeks. So far, it has helped a lot. I plan to go off all anti-depressants to get pregnant, but if you need something just to bridge the gap with Effexor, which is an SNRI, then prozac helps, even though it's an SSRI.
Better late than never! I took both of your advice's and consulted with docter next time I went. He said fine to take both at night. Unfor, there is no generic for the XR yet (or wasn't late Sept, 12). With the amount of stuff I take for FMS (depression involved), back pain and ADD, I have to have the generics if they're available.
I may go back temp. to 1 and 1 again. Without the XR, does seem like I'd not be gettnig the full affect.
The whole antidepressant weight gain or loss issue is still a big debate.
On one hand scientific studies show that SSRI and SNRI medications do not alter the bodies metabolism, on the other hand you see reports by people saying they gained weight on them.
In the last 16 years I have taken nearly every SSRI and SNRI medication on the market and did not experience weight gain or loss on any of them. Now, obviously I am about 25Lbs heavier than I was when I was in my 20s.
I started Effexor XR about 4 days ago. So far it's been somewhat similar for the initial stage as other SSRI's, though maybe with a touch more anxiety. The last time I was on an SSRI (first time on an SNRI now), was a few months back.
I'm also taking .5mg of clonazepam, and 20mg of propanolol, along with the 75mg of Effexor XR. I take all of them once per day, in the morning when I wake up (my peak anxiety time).
I tried Pristiq in an attempt to help with menopausal symptoms. I was (and am) on Effexor XR, and Pristiq is almost identical to Effexor XR. I think the only difference is in their molecules. I didn't find Pristiq any better (for me) than Effexor XR, so I went back to Effexor XR. I wish you the best of luck with it. I hope it works for you.
My insurance carrier recently switched my prescription coverage from the Brand Name of Effexor XR to the newly available Generic. I have noticed that my depression is getting worse, my anxiety is off the scale and I am falling back into very bad self-harming, self-destructive behavior. At the same time that this was switched, I was also taken off of Celexa (10mg daily) which was being used as an add-on treatment for the Effexor. We stopped the Celexa due to severe bruising and nose bleeds.
