I get severe facial pain on left side, with head, temple, jaw and neck involvement. Also have had numbness in left foot and hand, along with burning pain and odd sensations (foot feels wet and cold when it is dry.) History of twitching. My question is about tegretol, if anyone has any experience with it. I take 400 mg/day for the face/head pain. It is helping, as the pain is not the severe, drop me to my knees kind of pain.

m wondering if my doctor could prescribe something to help with my overactive bladder so I could keep taking the Lexapro or if I should just take something else instead. It started with absence seizure and at the age of 17 he started having convulsions. He has been on carbamazepine 1600 mg per day for 8 years aND had seuzures at an average of twice per year. Last year after marriage the frequency increased. Thrice in 3 months. We went to a different doc. He said that he had primary generalized seizure or a right right frontal focus with hemispheric bisynchrony. He also said that carbamazepine is not right medication for it so slowly changed it to kepra.

in both cases the treatment in Phenytoin and no known to me (till now a treatment to over count its side effects from gingival hypertrophy to the respiratory problems). As you are well fixed on this drug, no need to investigate for surgery neither to switch to Valproate or to Carbamazepine (in some cases patients can mix them to decrease the use of the Phenytoin and its side effects).

Yes it was Carbamazepine (Tegretol) he he he. It's been a long time since I've taken them. I'm only taking the gabapentin now because of side effects. But these are making me so loopy that I don't know what to do. I do still suffer with stabbing pains, some numbness etc. on the 300mg per day because I'm not taking enough, but then I can't drive because of the loopiness! LOL Tegretol was bad for me.

I prefer to not get on the chemical merry-go-round if at all possible, which require more medications and so forth and go the naturopathic route as that has no side effects, so is there a natural regimen I can take for the problem?

I cant help but feel that my neurologist did the dirty on me by giving me NO information about the meth/pred infusion and possible side effects and taking me off, as in just stopping, no slowly weaning off a pretty high dose of Tegretol (Carbamazepine) 500mg twice daily, with no ideas of the possible side effects of that either and the combination of the two side effects that ive read of either or the combination of both things whooshing on together.

Im not vomiting any more but still am nausious. Its been a month since then. Can the side effects last this long or is there another reason for the nausea?

Hi birdy-my son has been on tegretol for his epilepsy- he gained 20 lbs in less than 1month, and had bouts of dizziness; we discontinued tegretol because of these unbearable side effects, we tried many more meds until we found keppra, which has been a blessing! Seizure control and no adverse side effects!

If the side-effect is distressing then you should discuss it with your doctor. From what I've read in this forum I doubt it would be permanent. The memory loss is possibly caused by your concern and anxiety. If it were from the medication you may have noticed some decline earlier. It is preferable to be drug free (if possible) during pregnancy. From my limited knowledge I think it is not completely out of the question and in some cases may be preferable to the alternative.
