My new VA doctor wants to change one of my blood pressure medications from 160 mg of Valsartan 2 times per day to an equivalent dose of 100 mg of Losartan but only once per day. My blood pressure has been controlled for years with typical readings around 118/70 using the Valsartan, Amlodipine 5mg, and a diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide 25mg). I have not made the change yet.
1. Why should I agree to experiment with reducing my primary blood pressure medication and what are the risks?
I get that dry cough too.
I don't take an ACE inhibitor though, I don't think. Just Lopressor, Dyazide/Maxzide, Lipitor and aspirin for the heart issues.
For me it started a couple of years ago one summer after pushing myself too hard. I start coughing out of the blue to the point of either just about passing out or vomiting mucus. Urgg My chest hurts and feels sunken in, pounds very hard and quivers sort of and then I'm fine till it happens again.
It may be replaced with valsartan or candesartan which do not usually cause this side effect. The verapamil usually does not cause this side effect. This may not be related to your medications, and chronic cough or ' bronchial asthma' may actually be cardiac in nature ( e.g. CHF). Make sure your physician takes this other consideration into account.
I know many, many people, including myself, who have experienced either stabilization or major reducations in aortic root diameters with these drugs. Personally, I take valsartan, but my friends have experienced similar success (or better) with candesartan, telmisartan, losartan (although this drug is surmountable and thus theoretically not the best one to take), irbesartan, and, for ACE inhibitors, perindopril.
And losartan is really not the best ARB from what I understand. Try max dose or higher of candesartan, valsartan, or telmisartan.
Have you used Valsartan for treatment of hypertension patients in high risk patients? Are you aware about the combination Valsartan and Amlodipine to treat hypertension in high risk patients? How its is better than Telmisarton and Amlodipine combination?
-( 3 days on valsartan and I was having horrible side effects of dizziness, rapid heart rate, general feeling of crappiness, even slight shortness of breath with the slightest exertion None of which I experienced with the benazepril. Called the dr, he told me to stop the valsartan, don't take anything for 2 days and then back on the benazepril and see him next week.
I am so confused because I have too many issues that can cause the same symptoms. Recently, my doctor switched me from Valsartan HCTZ to Hydrochlorothiazide plus regular Valsartan for my blood pressure. When I first started it, right away I was having rapid heart beat and shortness of breath so he told me take potassium supplements. That did help but now I am wondering if I am taking too much potassium.
I've taken Valsartan since 2010 successfully. It controls my BP well.
He points out that losartan is alone among ARBs in the US in being available as a generic and therefore is cheaper to use than candesartan (another ARB, valsartan [Diovan, Novartis], is set to go off patent later this year.) "That means a lot of physicians are using it to save on the cost of medications. So I think that it's a worthwhile point to make that the drug simply requires at least a 100-mg initial dose and consideration of twice-daily dosing rather than once a day.
Could this be the problem of my high blood pressure. Recently I was put on Valsartan HCT and I feel awful. Tired spaced cold...
Instructions for Viagra, Cialis, etc. say not to take w/ BP meds. I'm thinking there are a cpl possibilities. Diovan (Valsartan) is available in different doses (20 mg, 40 mg, etc.), so maybe you could take a lower dose on the day you'll be using Viagra. Or possibly just skip your usual dose that day, then resume the next. However, your Dr. may not agree. I think the best strategy is to ask your Dr. about using these 2 drugs at the same time.

I'm 32 years old, male and have had mild Vertigo symptoms for 9 months now. The symptoms of feeling like I just got off a boat are constant and happen 80% of the day, all day every day. I have never fallen over from it but it does greatly affect my quality of life.

Had Bells Palsy in April 2014 on my left side of my face (MRI, CT, Xrays done to make sure it wasn't a stroke), cleared up by June/July 2014. Vertigo like symptoms started in August 2014..
m taking 80 mg of Diovan (Valsartan). My kidney doctor prescribed this knowing of my liver issues and he did do some research to determine a medication that was 'easier' on the liver.
I have some sort of connective tissue problem (not Marfan, but perhaps MASS syndrome), and I began using ARBs (valsartan) a few years ago, when this research first debuted. I graduated to a maximal dose (320mg/valsartan/day) about a year and a half ago. I don't know if this is wishful thinking or what, but my myopic progression and aortic dilatation both seem to have completely stopped (and aortic dilatation actually appears to be reversing to normal size).
I could not lay down and sleep and spent most of my time in a recliner chair to sleep. I was placed on Coreg and was also on Valsartan, diuretics, a low sodium diet and low fluid intake. My Pulse rate went from 107 to currently between 70's and 80's. PRO BNP lower 1800 points and can now take a full breath and sleep in my bed without any problems. I have more energy and I am able to go on treadmill for 15 min and walk every evening without feeling out of breath.
s therapy. To keep stable, take angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Good ones are candesartan, telmisartan, valsartan. Depending on your body size you may need to take a maximal dose or even more than a maximal dose if you are a big person. (When I say maximal dose I refer to the maximum dose approved by the United States Food & Drug Administration; this info is available on the internet for each type of ARB.) High-dose ARBs can stop or even reverse aortic root dilatation.
