Avatar n tn My hypothyroidism is causing me to have leg cramping, especially during rigourous excersize. I was told that if I take potassium the cramps should lessen, but my hypothyroidism also caused me to develop high cholesterol. Is it bad to take a potassium pill of 99mg when you have high cholesterol? Mine is about 210.
Avatar f tn Does anyone else have recurring issues with low potassium (hypokalemia)? Prior to TX I don't think it had been really ever checked but since starting it's shown up low (2.1-2.8) a few times.
793305 tn?1493925518 Apparently my potassium is on the mildly low side. Dr said eat a banana a day. I hate banana's. Is there something else out there to eat besides banana's?
Avatar n tn I've always had low pottassium and always had to eat a banana everyday. I also have Graves Disease, had hyperthyroidism and had RAI (radioactive iodine) then a Thyroidectomy. I never associated the two. I thought my low pottassium was from heart issues being born with a heart murmur. Maybe it does both fall together. Just get on the bananas and take a pottasium supplement everyday until the levels increase.
Avatar f tn Having had an acute episode of renal failure in the past, I can say that if you're not eating the foods that are high in potassium and not supplementing potassium, then the potassium can actually go down like that in three months. I don't think you need to really panic. All you really need to do is go see your doctor who noted the high potassium and have that doctor retest your potassium.
88793 tn?1290227177 Atacand HTC [candesartan + hydrochlorothiazide] may raise blood sugars. Consult with your pharmacist regarding Atacand drug interactions with ANY and ALL drugs/supplements/herbs/vitamins you are taking which may elevate blood sugars. If none exists consult with your doctor on switching to another bp medication.
Avatar f tn If your Doctor wanted you to have the maximum, perhaps 2x50mg would have been easier on you, by dividing it through the day. This medication can promote too much potassium in the body, which in turn can cause serious arrhythmia. You are also right to question coming off your beta blocker abruptly, Metoprolol, because many people have to start taking them again and be weaned off.
Avatar n tn My endo tested my electrolytes while I was on treatment and while I was on potassium pills. I swear I feel better on potassium pills. She said everything was normal. What are the symptoms of low potassium vs. high potassium?
Avatar n tn I get that dry cough too. I don't take an ACE inhibitor though, I don't think. Just Lopressor, Dyazide/Maxzide, Lipitor and aspirin for the heart issues. For me it started a couple of years ago one summer after pushing myself too hard. I start coughing out of the blue to the point of either just about passing out or vomiting mucus. Urgg My chest hurts and feels sunken in, pounds very hard and quivers sort of and then I'm fine till it happens again.

214529 tn?1333303619 Any way ive upped my potassium intake and take 1 600mg potassium supplement twice a day and have been run free for almost 2 months hope i dont jinx myself and take care!
397129 tn?1209315462 The cramps and pain are all due to the potassium channel problem. Potassium plays a very important role in muscle contraction. During muscle contraction (and relaxation), the potassium molecules move in and out of each individual muscle cell, through the potassium channels. The pins and needle is also a manifestation of a lack of potassium balance across the nerve cell membrane.
4336029 tn?1352988422 could low potassium cause my body to have muscele spasms all over my body???

1500525 tn?1458529998 Hi, I'm 43 & in hospice bcuz of CHF. Lately, I haven't been able to hold anything down. I'm not dehydrated (IV in the arm) but I'm extremely thirsty, and it seems nothing quenches my thirst after I take a drink I actually feel more thirsty. And when my mouth gets so dry like extremely dry, I get nausea, dry heave, then up comes bile ( the same thing is happening out the other end & same color/no smell I am told) I'm guessing that's bile too.
Avatar f tn I went to have my wisdom teeth removed today and before they started, the nurse mentioned my potassium levels were high. They asked if I was active, if I have eaten bananas recently or drank gatorade. None of these have happned. I have not been to the gym or done any strenous activites in a least a month. I can not stand bananas and do not eat them ever and same with gatorade. I am just curious as to why the doctors asked this and if this is something I should possibly look into.
Avatar f tn I went to the dr and my blood pressure is continuing to increase so they added another med to lower it and they tested my potassium and sodium. My potassium was at 3.5 and the range is 3.5-5. I am taking a hctz with spironolactone and they added lisinopril. The dr was more concerned about the potassium going to high because spironolactone and lisinopril are potassium sparing but after the tests I don't think that will be a concern. My sodium was also on the low end of normal 3.
Avatar m tn You are correct ACE inhibitors may cause hyperkalemia (high level of potassium). It seems potassium is normally excreted by the kidneys, so disorders that decrease the function of the kidneys can result in hyperkalemia. The kidneys normally remove excess potassium from the body. Therefore, most cases of hyperkalemia are caused by disorders that reduce the kidneys' ability to excrete potassium.
Avatar f tn Well, high or low potassium has an effect on anyone. Potassium is used to maintain a balance between chemical and electrical reactions in the body, potassium being an electrolyte. Excess Potassium is removed from the body by the Kidneys and so this would be a starting point. The Hormone aldosterone controls the rate at which the kidneys remove potassium, water and sodium from the blood and this hormone is a steriod type produced in the adrenal gland.
Avatar f tn What are the symptoms of high potassium levels and low potassium levels? My dog is having kidney problems.
