Can toprol xl be cut in half

Common Questions and Answers about Can toprol xl be cut in half

toprol

Avatar f tn The Toprol XL (Metoprolol Succinate) tablet should not be cut in half. Doing so defeats it's time release properties. If you want to mess with dosages (and I don't think you should), the generic Metoprolol Tartrate (referred to as just Metoprolol) can be cut in half without a problem. I take an odd, 75mg. Per day; 50mg at dinner, and 25mg (half a pill) upon rising. Think of your dose level as a "starting dose level".
Avatar m tn i am taking toprol xl 25 mg (half in am and half in pm. it seems to be working on bp but when i am up on my feet heart rate goes to 100-115. why isn't it working on hr.
Avatar m tn I have been taking 50ml of Toprol XL for three weeks. I am going off of it today, and was wondering if I should wean off of it?
Avatar n tn The operation was totally successful and I was prescribed 25 mg of Toprol XL to be taken twice daily. My local cardiologist (who has been treating me for the past 20 years) says my heart muscle has shrunk back towards normal size and that I'm "doing so well" I should cut my Toprol XL dosage by 50%. Do you concur? Would this reduced dosage have any negative impact whatsoever on the mean-time-to-failure of the replacement valve? Thank you very much. CCF is simply the BEST!
926651 tn?1244140366 3. The only difference I can identify in my routine is that my cardiologist started me on Toprol XL 25mg daily. Any ideas why this spike could have occured?
Avatar f tn I can't answer your question about Sotalol, but I can say I have extensive experience with Toprol XL. Only input, 25 mg is a very light dose in my experience. I'd expect you to have very few side effects (low blood pressure, dizzy) for such a low dose. What are you trying to treat, fast pulse?
Avatar n tn I had an episode of svt in June. Given adenosine to stop it. Then prescribed Toprol XL to keep heart rate low. It seems that I have pacs every day. Yesterday it was constant for about 9 hours. About one per minute. My chest feels like it is quaking, makes me fearfull, nauseous, generally weak. Saw cardiologist yesterday, we both wonder if Toprol is making situation worse. It's never been this constant before. I have another appointment in a month.
Avatar n tn you won't be on a time release with standard metoprolol that is why you need to take it twice a day. I don't know why you have to cut in in half, Wal-Mart has generic metoprolol in 25mg tablets for $4.
Avatar m tn I have taken 50 mgs of toprol XL for 12-13 years. It is a very safe and a good medication in my opinion. The XL means that it has an Extended Life .. in other words one pill is supposed work for at least 24 hours i think... but anyway... I dont know why the doc would say just use it when your rate is fast.. if you took one a day ....your heart rate should stay pretty regular Id think.. but Im not a doctor... I dont really know about taking it occassionally... doesnt make alot of sense to me..
Avatar f tn I am taking the 50 mg dose of Toprol XL in the morning as the nurse said. She never called me back Friday so guess I'll be on the phone Monday to see what the doctor said. I just checked my BP and it was 115/51 Pulse 58. I don't feel bad at this number at all. At least I'm not having the fast heart rate and only a skipped beat here and there. Maybe the few days of faster heart rate and skipped beats every 5 or so beats was just one of those things. that I will have to deal with.
343006 tn?1314446471 I then e mailed the makers of toprol xl - and they confirmed toprol xl can cause ringing of the ears as a known side effect. I also checked DIovan and its listed as well - Due to this , I guess the next best thing to do is see my Doctor and complain to get off the medications or switch them. thanks too for info on h.b.p and how it can cause ringing in the ears, when its too high .. I recheck and check my b.p everyday 3 to 4 times daily- when medicatated its down to normal levels.
Avatar n tn s idea sounds like a good one to me and as I changed, at my own request, to Atenolol beta blocker, to get the longer half life at low cost I sometimes cut my morning dose in half to accomplish the same thing Tom mentions... burn off some of the buildup.
Avatar f tn I take 200 mg of toprol xl (metoprolo er), 100 morning, 100 night. My tables can be broken in half to make a 50 mg dose, which I have also used. I'd guess your 50 mg toprol xl can be split in half to give you a 25 mg tablet. I'm not suggesting what dose you should use, just saying I think you have a way to take 25 mg accurately if that's what is needed. I take the med to slow down my HR, driven by AFig. When in sinus I was taking 100 mg and had a rest HR of about 60.
Avatar m tn Unbelievable. I was on 25mg (mind you 25mg) of Toprol XL for several years until the cardiologist said: "That is bad stuff, get rid of it". Per his instructions, I cut the pills in half and took those for 10 days and then took the now 12.5 mg every other day for another 10 days. I had no ill effects. I can't, obviously, comment on your condition but 300mg of that stuff every day is frightening to me.
Avatar m tn I spent 6 years taking Toprol XL, 100mg once a day. Started working with a trainer about 4 months ago and after two months they cut me down to 75mg when my pulse started dropping into the low 50's from the 70's. I was told to stop taking it immediately by two different cardiologists after suffering a fainting issue and visiting the er. It has been about 6 days since I stopped taking Toprol XL. Pulse is still in the 40's, bp fluctuates from 90/40 to about 105/55.
406399 tn?1201884300 what is the best way to wean off ,of toprol xl beta blocker medication. iv been on it for 2yrs now and I dont like its effects at all. been to 2 doctors and they refused to take me off it ? or change it to another medication. I was put on this med for palpitations that come and go. and high blood pressure that wont drop down easy at times! my ekg tests over the years have been normal and had stress tests done , again normal ? why then toprol xl ??
Avatar f tn Yes you can find online a few web sites , that will tell you this ! look under side effects of toprol xl - you can find it by reading (problems with toprol xl) it should come up ! a long while ago (years) bbc news reported the u.k medical asso , had found beta blockers caused cholesterol to build up in most people who took it. so they limited the use of beta blockers - they also reported that due to adverse side effects , beta blockers would be in limited useage in the u.k.
Avatar f tn I was having difficulty breathing since beta blockers cause the bronchioles to constrict and I have had a mild touch of asthma in the past. I was on this med for 9 months . I read that you can have side effects on this drug at any time during treatment. I am a nurse an even said to my doctor don't I have to ween off the med he said oh no you are on such a small dosage you'll be fine . He gave me a mild dieuretic in place of the toprol. I think this drug is dangerous...
Avatar n tn I have been on this combination for 6+ years and doing pretty well with them. In May 2008 I was started on Toprol XL 25 mg. It worked for my blood pressure and lowered it but it also made my depression worse and I finally went to my doctor to get off of them. I am now weaning off of the Toprol XL. I am on the second day of 12.5mg and I can't tell you how bad I have felt all day. Extreme anxiety and jittery. I CANNOT wait for this drug to be out of my system.
Avatar f tn metronidazole Metoprolol should be taken with food or just after a meal. A Toprol XL tablet can be divided in half if your doctor has told you to do so. The half tablet should be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing. Chewing or crushing the pill could cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Avatar f tn I was put on Topral XL just before Thyroid surgery as the surgeon said that my ekg showed something wrong...sent me to heart dr. who said there is nothing wrong with your ekg but I will put you on Topral XL...called the pre-op nurse to ask her if I could take it the morning of surgery and she said that was no problem....well, I ended up in the ICU with only half of my thryoid out as they had to stop surgery as my pressure went way down...on respirator, etc., etc.
Avatar n tn I have asthma and I am overweight but trying to work on this. I am on Toprol xl and using a inhaler.. What can this shortness of breath be..? it comes over me off and on... I do have alot of anxiety but this doesn't feel like this, its happening when I am not anxious. I am very worried and confused?
Avatar f tn I did it this way: I cut the pills in half and used half a pill for 10 days and then I took half a pill every other day, again for ten days, and then I stopped altogether.
Avatar n tn Can the toprol XL dose be increased without running my blood pressure down too low. How high can it be raised safely. Also would magnesium supplement and potassium help this condtion? Are there any effects that hormones like cortisol or testosterone to the heart arrhythmias or PVCs.Stress seems to make it worse. IT just seems like there is something that is triggering this. Please help.
Avatar n tn I am wondering if you are uneasy about taking digoxin. If so, I would ask you cardio if you can get by with just the TOPROL XL. Digoxin, xanax, toprol xl, and lisinoprol seems like a lot of stuff to be taking. I am a runner and only take TOPROL XL 12.5mg. This knocks out my extra beats and really slows my heart down. A little seems to go a long way for me.
Avatar m tn I'm a 60 year old, who, over 7 years has lost 60 lbs, and with the help of meds reduced my cholesterol, and high blood pressure. All my labs are excellent, including testosterone, potassium and magnesium. Nothing out of range. Over time, as my weight has decreased, the meds have come down. Now, I'm @210 (still overweight) and on low dosages of Lisinopril (10mg), Toprol XL (25mg), and a diuretic (37.5). Over the past 4 weeks, I've experienced some morning sluggishness and ED.
Avatar f tn Now THAT wiped me out, nut was actually half of what can be prescribed. I had 54 years of SVT before deciding to do something about it. The procedure is relatively simple for the patient, and you're out same day, or after an overnight stay. This approach actotally has no more rush than messing with anti-arrhythmics. It could be an opportunity to get your life back and feel normal again.
