Is Lantus and Metformin ok to take or is the Metformin harmful to my liver? I know several with Hep-c who take Metformin.
The Lantus / insulin glargine is a very good well-tolerated product. The injections are painless. It is often prescribed together with metformin.
Are you a type 1 or type 2 diabetic? He is type 2 he started taking a new medication called byetta. You inject in your arm before you meals. My husband has lost 40 lbs in the last 6 months. He just can't eat like he used to since he has been on the byetta. It curves your appetite and apparently helps your body produce it's own insulin. It might be something you want to run by your endo doctor. Let me know.
3 months ago my 84 year old father was switched from 4 mg glimperide to lantus 30 units, then 40 units. A1c was 8.9 before change. Now it is 11.5 and he has lost appetite and 10 pounds. This week we started 8 units of insulin before meals. Bs still 200s to 300s all the time. He does have chronic renal failure which has been stable. My question is why go through all this hassle, which is not easy for his age if it's making bs worse? Couldn't he go back to pills and add on another med??
I have been put on Lantus, which is working well, but now he (the doctor) has also put me on Byetta. I read all the warnings, and I asked the pharmacy, and they both told me the side effects are nausea, diahrrea, upset stomach and possible life threatening pancreatis.
This bothers me, as my stomach upsets easily, but what I really want to know is how many of you have been on it and what your reactions were? Also, is the chance of being allergic to it very high?
Does anyone know a formula for amount of Lantus needed for a basal dose vs how many units fast-acting you take per carb? I have major swings. Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking.
I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500.
When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising).
any suggestions to why this is happening or how i can take care of this would be greatly helpful.
I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???. I get my supplies from the Military Hospital because I am a retired service member and they do not have the lantus solostar flex pen but they do have the levimer flex pen.
My sister also has type 1 and takes lantus at bedtime and then takes humalog for correction AND to cover food with carbs, so in her case, if her BG is not High (if it IS under a particular number that she and her doc have discussed), then she does not need a correction shot AND if she was not going to eat anything containing carbs at that time, she would not need humalog to cover food, HOWEVER, she would still take her lantus shot at bedtime.
I used Byetta for a long time and I am not an expert or medical person. You are best to get the information from your doctor. Before I started using Byetta, I had to take classes from a nurse on how I had to inject Byetta into my stomach. It was prescribed by my Doctor. Byetta has side effects reported by some people but I had no problems with it other than the expense. It does give you a feeling of fullness and it has a nickname (Spit).
I would really like some help with this. Byetta has been wonderful so far, and I've lost 30 lbs, yay! But now I've developed insomnia - terrible, only 3 hours of sleep a night insomnia, which has never bothered me before. If I skip my second Byetta shot for the day, I can usually get a full night's sleep. So that's certainly a clue that I may not be able to take the full two doses of Byetta a day.
m on a good track to continue the AM Lantus injections. Im also increasing my Humalog to equal 1 unit for every 10 g. carbs vs 15. Depends on what activities I'm doing. Also, I am taking a sliding scale 1-4 additional Humalog units in a.m. to cover high fasting bg...in addition to covering breakfast carbs. It seems to correct well, and I'm off to a better day overall.
I see that this is under juvenile diabetes, which I know even less about. But, Byetta is remarkable for a lot of folks, and there are two newer, similar, products available also.
I actually started on Victoza about 3 months ago. I had to change to Byetta in about 2 weeks (finished Victoza sample and insurance would only pay for Byetta). I developed nausea at the smaller dose of Victoza, and never used the larger dose. The nausea was unchanged with the change of meds.....and I have lost a LOT of weight (29 pounds). But the nausea started within a day or two of starting it. At least for me.
I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
Insulin reduces glucose [blood sugar] levels not elevate. Keep in mind many things elevate glucose levels; improper diet, lack of exercise, excessive body weight, even stress.
Test times:
1. - Lantus - before dosing to see your beginning day level
2. - Preprandial - right before you eat to get a baseline measurement
3. - Postprandial - 2-3 hours following a meal. This will tell you how the foods you ate affected your glucose level.
Also important to dose Lantus at the same time each day.
I have been sick with a cold/flu for three weeks. Two days ago, I developed diarrhea. It seemed to occur immediately after eating. Today, the diarrhea was bright yellow and I passed something the size of a small grape (also yellow in color). I'm currently on synthroid (for hypothyroidism), effexor (for depression), and metformin & byetta (for insulin resistence). I've been on the Byetta for nearly a month, but have not suffered any side effects to date.
I was diagnosed with type II diabetes 3 months ago. I was started on byetta at the routine initial dose which was increased 2 months ago. I am only taking byetta, and no oral hypoglycemics (metformin, etc.)I have lost 29 lbs in that length of time, primarily due to decreased appetite, nausea, and vomiting. I understand that this is in all likelyhood due to delayed gastric emptying. My question: Is this ever going to get better???
In july of this year was told to add Novalog 5 units after every meal and on sliding scale. I quickly gained anoather 25 lbs. and I feel miserable. I was on Byetta for 1 and a half and kept weight down and was put on oral meds and my levels was still in 400s thats when I start Lantus. I can't deal with the weight diet exercise does not help. What should I do.
