hi dilip this is naseer 2009 ,ur problem could be due to a chronic ear infection resulting in perforation of ur ear drum or tympanic membrane resulting in purulent ear discharge ,this could be due to chronic sinusitis or ETB ,u have got to go through a course of anti biotics,anti histaminics ,mucolytics and topical ear drops after cleaning ur ears,for aa period of 7 days and prevent water form entering ur ear, avoid blowing ur nose hard.pls tell me ur results.

Did you mention the discharge to the Vet? You have follow up for the ear issue? Maybe you need to see another Vet for a second opinion and, if you do, mention the discharge. Just because he is on antibiotics does not necessarily mean he is on the right one. Cultures may need to be done.

I give him gabapentin and use ear wash as much as possible. Also antibiotic ointment in his ears. There is a brown crusty discharge daily and an audible rattle when he shakes his head.. I want to keep him absolutely as comfortable as possible during his last years. He is still eating and pooping regularly. Am I helping his comfort or just prolonging the inevitable for my own selfish reasons? Any similar experiences will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello & welcome......Ear mites cause intense scratching....Yes, with a very bad odor......They produce a blackish/brown buildup alot like coffee grounds......With ear mites, it's normally BOTH ears afflicted.....If your guy has a discharge actually draining from his ear, then it's probably an infection.......Just moist & kinda red is normal this time of year.....Because of allergy season, heat and humidity; ears get itchy... I'd just keep a close eye on them for a few days...
