Avatar f tn You could also contact the HMBA (I think it is) - it's a human milk bank that combines breast milk from multiple women, dehydrates it and I think might send it over seas. I contacted them with an excess supply but they couldn't use mine as I took baby aspirin. Are you freezing the milk flat? that helped save a ton of room for me.
Avatar n tn He had a serious GI bug, couldn't keep even breast milk down, and he vomited every 20-30m for hours and hours. When we went to the ER, he wasn't dehydrated but his labs were way off. He remain in the hosp for several days on IV fluids. Nothing since those first two incidents. The metab. specialist advised us to have a jar of frosting on hand, should he start with a GI thing again. So, all this makes me wonder.
Avatar f tn It is very difficult o assess the total calories a mother needs for breast feeding because some babies need more milk than others and maternal metabolism too differs from mother to mother. On an average a breast-feeding mother needs about 2,000 to 2,500 calories per day. Hence, do not go for a sudden drop in calories in first 3-4 months. It is important to start exercising during this time as this will help tone up the body and also help shed extra pounds.

Avatar n tn I am a Pedi Nurse Practitioner. We warn parents not to put child on whole milk until 12 months due to the fact that whole milk doesn't have the iron and other vitamins a growing infant needs. Also, the fat content in breast and formula milks are high and of the right content for proper brain development. What the others list above are also correct but the main focus is the metabolism and the growth of the child at this very important stage.
Avatar n tn btw you are also gaining liquid (the older baby gets the more milk you produce) so your breasts are probably getting heavier. just keep up the good work and try not to get frustrated. oh and put the scale away for a while.
Avatar f tn When you breast feed your baby your metabolism is impacted b/c your body is making milk. I was frequently hungry b/c of a higher metabolism. I did loose all the baby weight plus some. I have friends though who did not experience the hunger and weight loss I did. It's different for everyone. You should definitely eat healthy b/c whatever you eat is passed to the baby. Drinks need to be considered too (caffeine and alcohol).

Avatar f tn If you aren't consuming enough calories and fat it can decrease your milk production and it decreases how much fat is in your milk. It's important while breast feeding to eat a balanced diet that includes healthy fats. If you don't feel like eating full meals try having a few snacks throughout the day. Oatmeal is a good choice because it's healthy and can increase your milk production.

Avatar f tn But certainly your weight or size doesn't have an affect on your breast milk I wouldn't think. I have a friend that had twins and since she breastfed double the babies, she had a very high supply of breast milk, but it just wasn't practical for her, she ended up switching to formula because it's hard enough with ONE baby during a growth spurt, you're literally feeding sometimes every hour or thirty minutes, two babies is wayy harder.
Avatar f tn Hi I just gave birth 3months ago and have put on 50 pounds during the pregnancy. I am counting calories but am always hungry which is preventing me from sticking with a diet. As a result, am seriously considering taking the prescription pill (phentermine) to help supress my appetite. My question is, is it save to take this pill while breastfeeding?

Our baby (All breast milk) was born average then took awhile to put on weight and then passed all of the babies born at or before her in weight and height. She is a chunker. She has been in the 75% and above for weight and 90-95% in height since 4 months. She will be a year next month and has been walking for a couple of weeks. Instead of slimming down like I always hear, though. She has definetly gained more weight.
