Common Questions and Answers about Breast milk jaundice vs breastfeeding jaundice

milk

Avatar f tn Colostrum and breast milk are the best thing for a baby with jaundice or at risk for getting. The way your milk comes in by letting them 'cluster' feed as they call it first few days bc they drink the colostrum which is very good for them which eventually by about day 3-4 brings your milk in. When your milk comes in it does not look like store bought milk btw. Its kind of thin and whitish in color. Whereas colostrum is kind of yellowish.
Avatar f tn Tell the nurse If she gives your baby formula one more time you will Sue the crap out of her and who ever else gives that baby a paci or bottle. That's exactly what happened to my little guy he got confused because they claimed he had to have formula due to jaundice. When I got home I went to a breastfeeding forum and I also researched about jaundice and formula. Formula is actually worse because it constipated babies and breast milk doesn't.
Avatar f tn Well my son is a week old and the doctors said he has mild jaundice and they did some blood work on him , im not familiar with this my first son didn't have it cause i used formula and i was doing research and they said breastfeeding causes it ... now im worried should I stop for a while and use formula ?
Avatar n tn To get rid of jaundice he needs to be passing urine so you need to be getting him to drink as much breast milk or formula as go can. If you are somewhere where the weather is nice you can bring him out in the sun. If the jaundice is bad the doctor will do light therapy to get rid of it.
Avatar f tn My daughter was born at 35+5. Her jaundice level was 23. I just moved her incubator bed and sat under the light with her in a diaper and I held her the entire time. I continually gave her the breast and my doctor never said a thing. She was always under the light. Just keep on sunglasses.
9764007 tn?1405807828 jaundice can occur when a breastfeeding baby is not getting enough breast milk because of difficulty with breastfeeding or because the mother's milk isn’t in yet. This is not caused by a problem with the breast milk itself, but by the baby not getting enough to drink. Breast milk jaundice: in 1% to 2% of breastfed babies, jaundice may be caused by substances produced in their mother's breast milk that can cause the bilirubin level to rise.
Avatar f tn My daughter also had bad jaundice when she was born. For most babies sun light is all they need but in our cases sunlight isn't enough and it can be very dangerous. My daughter was given an actual billibed not just the blanket but I assume the same things apply. Keep your baby under the blanket all the time. Don't get them out except to feed and diaper changes. If its warm enough keep the baby in nothing but a diaper so as much skin as possible is exposed to the light.
Avatar f tn The best things for jaundice is filtered sunlight so give bub some nudey time in the sunlight and also breast milk if your breastfeeding is good for jaundice. All the best.
10427810 tn?1410754377 Just went through it with my little girl she was born at 35 weeks 3 days baby will be fine its just a pain cause you wanna enjoy your baby. Do the formula instead if breast milk it helps alot with their bowl movements an also see if you can do billy blanket from home that's wheat they let me do, doesn't hurt to ask? Only thing with that is every morning for like 5 days had to take her for blood work.
Avatar f tn My baby had jaundice & was dehydrated so I put him on bottles for the 2 days he was on treatment. However i just pumped for the first time after having large difficulty breastfeeding the first 2 days (hes four days old)- Im just curious as to how much colostrum Id be collecting at this point since obviously my milk hasnt come in, considering I couldnt pump until now. So how much colostrum would be collected? & how do I store it?
Avatar f tn My first I was planning to breast feed, but she ended up with jaundice really bad right after she was born. We had to force feed her because she lost to much weight, and also to get her system to flush. She got lazy with the bottle and felt it was to much work for the breast. I tried solely pumping, but it wasn't enough. Babies have a stronger suction to force the milk then a pump.
4165941 tn?1353988628 They ran a blood test on him today nd it came back too high. They told me to put him in the sun but not much out today, if its doesn't get better he will be hospitalized. :/ They also said he wasn't gaining any weight, they suggested I give him a little formula after breastfeeding. He's been asleep all day nd has ate 3 maybe 4 times today, I'm getting really worried. What can you tell me about jaundice? Am I worrying too much?
Avatar f tn My babygirl is 5 days old an I had to stop bf due to her jaundice, the doc recommends formula until she gets better. I started pumping today an of course my milk has come in but I'm only pumping about an ounce each boob. Does this mean I won't be able to breastfeed?
7491288 tn?1405987203 m breast feeding which he said will make her jaundice longer ge wants me to supplment 1oz of breast milk per feeding with formula. This will be expected ay 3 with the bili-light therapy, and when I tell you my baby fights me with this whole bottle bussiness. Even with herdaddy she fights the bottle. I find myself just given in so we can sleep. We go back thursday to have her levels rechecked. The doctor wants them down to 10. Has anyone went through this at home tx and it worked.
Avatar f tn Are you breastfeeding? Is her poo still dark? My son is 2 weeks and was jaundice also. The hospital said as long as his poo was changing and getting lighter, it was a good sign. They also said breastfeeding helped more than formula.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry. Can you pump for the time being? That way your milk won't dry up and they should be able to add breast milk in with formula. It's better for your baby anyways so I don't see how it could be a problem.
Avatar f tn Pump Pump Pump, plus if you were able to get the breast milk in her it helps with jaundice. The more milk you remove the more milk you will make. Until you get breastfeeding established use a newborn formula because it has more of what a new baby needs. Also you heat the bottle in a pot of water on the stove. If you do it in the microwave it heats unevenly and could have hot spots to burn baby.
Avatar f tn So my baby has a little jaundice but its going down. She can't go home for another day because my placenta tested positive for group b strep! But a week earlier my culture was negative! So I have to wait another day to find out the results of her culture..... I am one anxious mama! I was going to breast feed but the pediatrician wants me to supplement until her jaundice goes away. I'm all ok with that.
453798 tn?1262633421 My milk never came in and Alec is 8 days old. I finally gave up because he was getting frustrated and it broke my heart. Has anyone else had problems? It is kind of a letdown for me.
689528 tn?1364135841 I had the same problem! And to anyone who's babies are spitting up breast milk and not formula- don't give up breast milk completely! My son is doing this also and from what I've read its because breast milk is thinner and easier to spit up than formula. Basically I decided instead of completely throwing in the towel and quitting breast milk altogether, I'm just pumping 3 times a day now and feeding him breast milk 3 times.
Avatar f tn Firstly, eating anything whether it's formula or breast milk will help get rid of jaundice. Second, it's totally fine to supplement with formula. They actually make special formulas specifically for moms who wish to supplement, I plan on doing the same thing when my baby is born.
601046 tn?1331885156 The authors hypothesized that transplacental and breastmilk anti-HCV antibodies play a role in immunological protection against vertical transmission of HCV, and therefore recommended that breastfeeding of HCV-RNA positive milk be stopped when infant serum anti-HCV antibody turns negative." "Additional HCV-RNA testing is recommended during the breastfeeding period. The optimal timing and frequency of repeat testing during gestation and lactation is not known.
