Breast milk and alcohol

Common Questions and Answers about Breast milk and alcohol

milk

Avatar f tn So of you have say 2 drinks in an hour, your blood alcohol and your breast milk will have 0.08% alcohol. This amount is almost the same that is found in normal juice (yes there is naturally very very trace amounts in all juice). As long as you aren't drinking heavily and nursing at the same time, you are fine to have a drink every now and then without worrying about harming your baby.
Avatar f tn I was told not to pump and dump, its better to wait it out because the alcohol content in breast milk will be the same as in your blood, as youre blood alcohol levels decrease so will the amount in the breast milk and pumping and dumping will just be a waste. My dr told me that its better to just wait it out and to pump a little every now and then and use these test strips from walmart.
Avatar f tn And yes alcohol is bad for your baby. It is secreted in breast milk. They also sell tests strips for breast milk.
362119 tn?1223137936 is it still normal for him to sleep most of the day?? also....I am breast feeding and was wondering about alcohol and feeding him... is it safe for a small amout? lets say.. one glass of wine?
Avatar f tn The alcohol leaves your milk just like it leaves the rest of your body. So pumping and dumping is not "getting rid" of the alcohol. Only time does that.
Avatar f tn Yea u right its not worth the risk thats y I was tryna find out. But I asked the doctor about alcohol & she said pump enough 2 last and after the liquor wear off pump twice and trash that then its safe 2 feed. Thanx 4 ur advice, I really appreciate it!
8023513 tn?1404352955 Just wondering how alcohol affect breast milk and how bad it is to drink while breastfeeding. Not saying I'm going to be drinking, I'm just curious!
2207301 tn?1340990867 I did find at Babies R US they have test strips that you can test your breast milk to see if the alcohol levels are low and safe for you to feed that milk to your baby. It's what I plan on doing, I got pregnant 2 months after I turned 21 and my hubby turns 21 next year and I wanna be able to drink with him but I will be breastfeeding.
4043310 tn?1355912647 You have to pump and through it out. They have test strips that can test the milk and see if alcohol is still present.
5793136 tn?1375294504 From what I've read things like alcohol and nicotine and medicine etc all pass through breast milk.. do you'd probably want to either not smoke or formula feed. But I'd definitely do some research or ask your doctor. I was unable to breast feed my son six years ago so I'm just going off things I have read since then.
2207301 tn?1340990867 Yea i heard about those too. i cant go get them tonight tho.
Avatar f tn Pump and dump is not gonna help and the teat strips are a waste of money. Alcohol metabolizes through your breast milk at the same rate that it metabolizes in your blood. Meaning if you have one drink, regardless of how much you pump and dump it'll still take about an hour for your body to fully metabolize the alcohol. With that being said the concentration of alcohol in your breast milk also reflects that of your blood.
Avatar f tn So my boyfriends roommate told me that if you drink one beer a day it will help with the production of breast milk..he has a son and said thats what the nurse told his chids mother while breastfeeding...dont really know if i should believe it and would like some insight. i am currently trying to breastfeed my 1 week old daughter but im having a little bit of difficulty beacsue she was 4 weeks preterm.
Avatar f tn It takes the same amount of time for the alcohol to exist yor system as it does your breast milk!
Avatar f tn Hopefully you have a good milk supply but when you drink you have to "pump and dump" to get the breastmilk with alcohol out of your system...
Avatar f tn There's a lot of controversy on this but I was told once you're sober the alcohol is out of your system and out of your milk so pumping and dumping is pointless. I've also heard that the amount of alcohol in your milk isn't enough to effect your baby when you do drink because it does into your body and say your blood alcohol content is .08 which is the legal limit then the amount in your milk would only be a very small percentage of that.
Avatar f tn Caffeine is fine just try to keep it more for in the morning as it does pass to baby and will affect lo longer and alcohol does not increase production it makes for a easier let down and will peak in breastmilk 30-90 minutes after uve had the drink pumping and dumping will not work out the alcohol faster just helps if u get engorged and need relief
Avatar f tn You should talk to your doctor about guidelines to follow if you drink while breastfeeding, alcohol can be transmitted through breast milk although I am not sure how long it stays in the system for. Usually one would do what is called 'pump and dump' where you express milk and just dump it so that baby doesn't ingest it but I'm not sure how long you would need to do that for until you can feed again.
Avatar f tn I could be wrong....but if I remember correctly I read somewhere that the thc could be transferred through the breast milk and that you shouldn't smoke weed while breast feeding!!!! I was curious about it cause I wanted to smoke with my bf after baby got here...I'm going to breast feed as we'll but since I read that I will just wait til I'm done breast feeding.
7184931 tn?1390773745 Keeping track of time sounds better plus i want to try and have breast milk saved up. I don't know where I'll put it my sister said if she finds frozen breastmilk in her freezer she'll throw it away.
Avatar f tn As for drinking you need to pump before tou drink and at least twice after you are finished if you are not sure on if you have alcohol in your system they make alcahol testing strips for your milk I recommend getting them
Avatar f tn I was going to pump and dump but the other mommies told me about the alcohol testing strips you cam purchase for breast milk so I will be investing in those for special nights with my hubby.
Avatar f tn You always want to make sure you have enough nutrients.
Avatar f tn Once the alcohol is out of your blood stream its out of your breast milk... so the only reason to pump and dump is for comfort(if your over full) other than that its a waste to dump, so dont feel like you have to pump every ounce out as its not gonna make the alcohol leave any faster and missing one or two feeding really shouldnt have too much affect on your milk supply... if you really want to drink i would try offering a bottle before that night...
