Break oxycontin in half

Common Questions and Answers about Break oxycontin in half

oxycontin

Avatar f tn Morning Bree - Oxycontin is a strong opiate drug and it is a controlled release, so chewing the pill when you take it will release the whole dose all at one time. 80 mg is high enough to cause some discomfort if stopped cold turkey, 20 mg if taken long enough and tollerance is developed will cause withdrawal. I would reommend that if you are interested in stopping that you work on a taper plan to minimize withdrawal symptoms.
Avatar f tn It is actually five half lives. This is how it works. You take 10mg. In one half life you have 5 mg left. The next time the period of time passes that is the half life you have 2.5mg left. The next time 1.25 mg. The fourth half life leaves you 0.625mg. The fifth half life leaves you with 0.3125mg of the drug in your system and this is considered eliminated. Remember that the half life is a generic number and everyone's body is different.
Avatar n tn If you are trying to break an addiction to Oxycontin then Oxycodone may be a way to taper --- I used Oxycodone (Percocet) to taper off of high doses of Oxycontin until I got down to about half my former dose - then went to Suboxone. Sub took away the W/D's in a matter of minutes the first time I took it. It is deceitful though and can be very addictive itself. Best of luck to you as you try to break free from this demonic drug. Lots of help here - keep posting.
4898964 tn?1381257899 t afford to fly on autopilot, I must always keep my eyes on the road and hands in the wheel. Give yourself a break and try it a different way. What are you going to do different this time?
Avatar f tn I plan to going to my pain doctor once I get back in the US on 12/10. Until then, I want to try to decrease dose myself. Is this wise? I heard you cannot break Oxycontin in half, because it will go into your bloodstream faster and cause more problems with addiction. Is this true anyone? Thanks for reading this...I'll be back on here once I start my detox....

2080475 tn?1332126191 decided to quit taking it on a monday felt fine all week untill sun when i went into serious withdrawl! so as far as half life im not sure? but you can bet i was back on it mon! so i guess it was in my system for 6 days after i stopped. p.s.
Avatar n tn You've essentially cut your dose in half and that's a lot. Think about staying where you are for a few weeks. One week is not enough time to adjust to the decrease. It's great you're trying to break free! Just take it slow because you've been on a very large amount per day and you need the time to adjust every time you decrease your amount. Good luck and keep posting.
Avatar m tn you can google it...oxycontin er and half life.....
725248 tn?1316162245 Hi Chuck, Have you ever thought about switching to the Fentanyl Patch? I had my first hip implant when I was 35 years old and I'm 63 years old now, so I DEFINITELY am familiar with severe CP. I switched to the Fentanyl Patch in January when I went to my FIRST PM Dr. Also, I have had the RFA on both sides of my lower back in 3 places on each side and I was very fortunate as it gave me terrific relief. Unfortunately those weren't the ONLY places in my back.
Avatar f tn Yes you can I'm 8 days free..
Avatar n tn low dose formulations of oxycodone such as percocet(oxycodone/acetiminophen(tylenol)) or percodan(oxycodone/aspirin) which is most commonly given in 5mg or 10 mg tablets is usually given after certain surgeries and for people in severe pain. both oxycontin and percocet abuse has grown in popularity immensely in the past 10 years. its extremely drastic how fast it has arose to being a DOC for people. and the wd's are the same as other opiates of its kind like heroin or dilaudid.
Avatar f tn t explain how to go about that. My husband cut the oxycontin in half and I took that once at night and once in the morning for 3 days. When I thought about the next steps to get off the oxycodone, I thought to call the pharmacy for advice. I found out that I was on a 20mg time release oxycontin, and that cutting it in half meant I was cutting through the time release shell, and was just getting a burst of the oxycontin. Well, I wasn't going back there, so I just didn't take anymore.
Avatar n tn I dont see how it could show up different, since the active drug in both oxycodone and oxycontin is the same drug, oxycodone. Oxycontin has been formulated where part of the drug is released as soon as you take it and the rest is made do dissolve more slowly. Thats why your not supposed to chew or break the tablet. It's like taking morphine IR or morphine ER. They will both show up as morphine.
Avatar m tn I am also tapering from Oxycontin. Because the time release property is loctated in the coating of the pill, you can't cut them and expect them to work like the whole pill will. You don't say what strength you're using, so I can't suggest a taper for you. 10 mg per week would probably be good though. If it's at all possible, work with your doctor on this. Good luck to you!
1034192 tn?1445509784 I haven't been here in quite some time, but having a bit of depressive symptoms lately so thought it best to check in. I used to be a regular member while I fought my demons with the pain pills. I was on oxycontin, percs, and morphine for about 17 years. I was also on 2 antidepressants and tons of tylenol for headaches. Couldn't picture life without them. But here I am two and a half years clean. Took me about a year, some close friends, and a good counselor to do it.
Avatar f tn Always be absolutely definite before you ever break a tablet, in order to take a smaller dosage, that the medicine isn't a time released type. For instance OxyContin. If you take a broken time-release tablet, it could kill you. Instead of getting half the dose you would be taking a huge amount because taking half of a twelve hour tablet that is supposed to be released into your system a small amount over the twelve hours.
Avatar m tn If yould even just break them in half it would be good...there is an article on tapering in the health pages and the thomas recipe and amino protocl as well...taking small doses throughout the day is better than taking big doses a few times a day...tapering is hard for some, me included, and i had to give mine to someone to dole out to me as i would end up taking the same amount or more each day due to stressing over it...
749490 tn?1233206933 To my knowledge the answer to your question is yes 20mgs of oxycodone/percocet is the same amount of oxycodone that is in a 20mg oxycontin, its just in an extended release formula. I was pretty heavily into methadone and oxycontin(various other opiates) and I still dont know if this answer is correct or not. Why dont you ask your doctor or pharmacist, they would be able to provide you with the info your looking for.
Avatar f tn Oxycontin is oxycodone hydrochloride. It is time release and should never be broken in half or quarters etc..because a fatal dose could be delivered. Percocet, or its' generic Roxicet, contains oxycodone AND acetominophen(Tylenol). It is not time release. So...the difference is Oxycontin is much stronger and does not contain Tylenol; it is time release and is usually prescribed for use every 12 hours. That said...this is a substance abuse forum. Are you having a problem? V.
Avatar f tn It does help with the energy. Its listed in the Thomas recipe and made a world of difference for me! How much oxycontin were you taking?
