325405 tn?1262290178 I was diagnosed this past October as insulin resistant. I had a two hour glucose test and my blood sugar tested normal, but my insulin level was through the roof. My morning readings were 125 to 135. I was put on 500mg of Metformin and started low-carb dieting & exercising. My Metformin increased to 1000mg one month later and then in December my insulin was tested again it was finally normal.
Avatar f tn Anyone seen / used the new freestyle test strips? I was given them just a couple of days ago. The new shape is nice but I'm suspicious of them. http://www.abbott.com/global/url/pressRelease/en_US/60.5:5/Press_Release_0876.htm I've heard it said that sugar is sugar, your body doesn't know the difference. So why should our test strips? I take my blood sugar when I feel like it's high but these things give me numbers in the 80 -90 range, never above 100.
Avatar f tn t been able to because I ran out of test strips for my blood sugar meter and I am absolutely broke and have no way to get any so I have no clue when the next time I can test my blood sugar will be. You would think if the Dr tells you that you need to keep track of it and everything they help supply the test strips but no... and they are so expensive too..
503651 tn?1223174601 takes 6-8 weeks for USPS to deliver unit. Mine came with 10 each test strips and lancets and a test fluid bottle. Calibrate to strip number prior to using.
Avatar f tn However, if you can get a blood sugar test kit (and strips) you could test fasting blood sugar (as soon as you wake up and before eating), and 2 hours after meals. If these numbers are high, then you would need to see a doctor. Keep an eye out, there may be free blood sugar testing offered by some pharmacies / in malls from time to time. Why do you think you have diabetes? WHat are your symptoms?

1305767 tn?1361192676 Before stating whether you are in danger of diabetes, or you are normal it would be nice to know the make/model and age of your meter. Age of the test strips, if you are within the expiration date of the test strips, and whether the meter requires calibration prior to use. Knowing the aforementioned helps to determine if your test results qualify or not.
Avatar m tn HI 48 year old male, 5 feet 8 inches. 164 lbs. Recently had blood test , Blood sugar came back 128m/dl. Doctor has not recommended any medicines . He suggested to exercise and control the diet. Day before the test had a pasta lunch with cola and small pasta fried fish dinner with 2 drinks(alcoholic). dinner complete at 9.00pm. Also had a antidepressant for sleep. Went the next morning for test around 8.am. Is it possible for my test to be wrong given the previous days gluttony.
866901 tn?1505506236 In googling "blood glucose test strips", I found several websites which offered test strips and glucometers at varying prices (ie.http://www.diabetesnet.com/test_strips.php). Since your cat is going to need lifelong care, it will pay for you to shop around.
Avatar f tn Meanwhile I need a little clarification on what you are saying. You are saying that you test the blood sugar one minute and then a minute later you test again and it drops down. How much does it drop down by? Meters are not exact within a range of as much as twenty points, so if it is less than that it might just be the meter.
1058898 tn?1275675151 I would get confident with your meter as I described above and then test as often as you can afford (test strips are expensive!) two hours after meals. Perhaps the changes the dietician suggested will help. If not and you keep seeing highs as well as lows, then it is time to see a different doctor or an endocrinologist who is more skilled with blood sugar issues than regular doctor. (and who knows that anything above 140 is a problem, not above 190!
Avatar m tn I suffer from hypoglycemia, and from my experience the first way to detect it is through getting a meter from the doctor. When I went to the doctor about my symptoms, she gave me a meter for free, and a few strips (the strips are where they get you) I took my blood sugar when I wasn't feeling well and it was very low, confirming the diagnosis. At this point there isn't much medically that can be done.
Avatar f tn I've found when my numbers are high it's usually because I didn't really watch my diet. As a rule, I've always played fast and loose with rules in general. I can't now. I think you need to consider your possible need to add insulin to you medications. Talk with your doctor. Speak with your diabetes educator first. Good luck to you. Be well!
Avatar n tn At dinner I ate lasagna, salad, sweet tea. Anyway 30-45 minutes after dinner, my blood sugar was 118. Is this normal or does it seem kind of high? At the doctor last year fasting it was 91. Also, I have been suffereing from severe fatigue after my long runs and have to basically sit down for the rest of the day which I hate. I am going to start to check my blood sugar after these runs to see what it is. I eat alot after the long runs but it does not seem to help.
Avatar m tn An HbA1c blood test shows average blood glucose levels over a sustained period (about a 3 month period). Rather than a normal blood test that would only show the sugar levels at the time you gave your blood for testing. I buy the 10LG Parameter Urine Reagent Strips that can detect a few abnormalities by dipping the strip into a sample of urine, Leukocytes, Nitrite, Urobilinogen, Protein, pH, Blood, Specific Gravity, Ketone, Bilirubin, Glucose.
Avatar m tn He should send you for a fasting blood sugar test. It lasts several hours (I think five), and is definitive. I took such a test and when the results came back (clearly low sugar) my doctor congratulated me on not having diabetes. I changed doctors. In the meantime keep some sweets or cookies with you at all times. Eat several small means a day instead of three big ones.
Avatar n tn t fill the strip all the way) but it was a comfort for me to know my general blood sugar range (name brand test strips are HUNDREDS of dollars but can be covered by insurance after the 3gr test and a script from your dr). I ate like normal for the first day, testing as soon as I woke up and then 1hr after each meal. I was normal (78) when I woke up, but shot to 133 after breakfast of Greek yogurt and berries (I blame coffee creamer). I stayed in the 120s all day, which is considered too high.
Avatar f tn I found his meter - should I begin checking my blood sugar regularly? Would this be a better place to begin so that I can self-monitor not only to adjust my eating schedule but also to have some information to supply my doctor at the first of the year. Just not sure where to begin or what to do. The world is a lonely place without your parents to provide support and information! Thanks for your advice.
Avatar f tn My two cents worth is that initially, at least, you are going to have to resolve yourself to take lots of blood sugar sticks. Yipes! The automatic needle sticker is pretty painless. The test strips will be an expense and your insurance company may not pay for enough. If you eat the same kinds and quantities of foods consistantly, at the same time, once you have established the routine you can cut down on the sticks.
Avatar f tn The way to check for diabetes is with a blood test. A fasting blood sugar could be taken and a normal person would have under 100. A pre-diabetic would have 100 to 125 and a diabetic would have 126 or over. They could also do an OGTT which tests response to a sugary drink over a period of a couple hours (and again, test the blood). But the standard to diagnose diabetes is a blood test that measures A1C which is an average of blood sugars for a period of about 3 months. An A1C under 5.
Avatar m tn I drank 8 ounces of fruit juice (mostly papaya), and felt almost immediately disoriented. My blood sugar had dropped to 89. What would cause blood sugar to drop almost immediately after drinking fruit juice? And I realized that this must happen often, because sometimes I sip fruit juice and have a similar feeling. (So no more fruit juice to me!) I hope someone can point me in the right direction as to why this may be happening! I appreciate any and all replies! Thank you.
