Avatar n tn Bottom line, high blood sugar causes systemic damage -- and the damage increases the longer we endure those high levels. When my blood sugar is out of control, i am often grumpy and quite impatient simply because I feel so lousy. You might find these websites useful -- it *is* so difficult to get gain control. Once we get there through, tho', it really can become easier to "stay there" if we gently nurture ourselves in this struggle. Good luck.
Avatar n tn My daughter has Type 1 diabetes. When blood sugar is too high, it can build ketones up in the blood which are potentially fatal if not treated. The way to get rid of these ketones is by lowering the blood sugar that caused them, AND by flushing them out via the urinary tract.
Avatar f tn I would ask the doctor if they did any blood glucose tests. By looking at the lab papers, you may not know if they did this, for the paperwork would be in very technical language. If they did NOT do blood glucose tests, and if you do have abnormal thirst and fatigue, by all means specifically ask them to do a blood glucose test. Everything else can indeed be very normal but blood glucose levels be high, so if the other tests are normal it doesn't mean that you necessarily are not a diabetic.
Avatar n tn About your question well when you are diabetic and are sick with a virus or anything else your sugar levels go crazy. When diabetics get ketones in there urine there sugar has been high for to long. That is not good. Diabetics are more likely to get ketones when they are sick. When my son has this problem the signs are thirst, bellyache, vomiting, and his sugar will be high. We get him to drink a lot of a sugar free drink. This helps flush it out.
Avatar n tn Presence of ketones after fasting (with normal blood sugar levels) is known as nutritional ketosis.
1388299 tn?1279740904 Ketones are chemicals that have a fruity smell and are excreted in the urine. They are produced when the body has to reduce the glucose level and insulin is not available in sufficient quantities to do so. The body has an "emergency" back-up which produces the tell-tale odor. You don't do anything to specifically "bring down ketones".
Avatar n tn But again, those would more likely come with higher levels. More revealing than a fasting blood sugar is an A1C that looks at your sugar levels over a period of weeks. Is having high blood pressure at your age common in your family? How are your tonsils and your breathing? Only reason I mention that is there has been lots of publicity lately about sleep apnea in children, especially those with narrowed airways, and sleep apnea is known to in some affect insulin resistance and blood pressure.
Avatar m tn If I monitor my blood sugar levels closely, my levels actually go up during and after exercise. I thought they were supposed to go down. Why is this happening?
Avatar m tn I started taking Sinemet about 3 months ago and my blood sugar levels, insulin resistance are all over the map. In the morning I fight to get my BSs down and now, in the afternoon, I often have BS crashes into severe hypo territory. I've been to the emergency twice these past two weeks - a week ago Friday with hyper, ketones and this last Friday with a severe hypo with 5 units still active!!!

Avatar n tn I hope your mother is well on her way to recovery. High blood sugar can be controlled with diabetes medications and pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics. The presence of ketones in the bloodstream is a common complication of diabetes. A urine test for ketones is more commonly done than the blood test. If there are 2 positive signs (++), this indicates the level of ketones present in her urine, which is normally negative. It is important that this is treated also to prevent ketoacidosis.
Avatar f tn Drink plenty of water (at least 8 glasses) and eat healthy food. But you also need to get your blood sugar levels checked as high specific gravity and ketones can be found in glycosuria. Glycosuria is the excretion of glucose into the urine. It is caused by elevated blood glucose levels, most commonly due to untreated diabetes mellitus. In nondiabetic persons, ketonuria may occur during acute illness or severe stress.
Avatar n tn I am a school nurse with a diabetic student who has trace to moderate ketones and sugar in the 300 range. The student has only vomited a couple of times Mom says she has called the MD and they say only give water. The student was here at school yesterday, and she is at home today. What would the treatment be for this case?
Avatar n tn they can cause what you describe.you can buy cheap urine testing strips at pharmacy and the next time your blood sugar is very high wee on the stick!
Avatar n tn You need to continue to keep an eye out for ketones, even when your blood sugar may not seem high to you. Stress hormones that are designed to deal with short term danger stay turned on for a long time after surgery. Ketones can show up even because you have not been eating for a period of time. So, I hope that I've provided you with some explanation for why ketones are hanging in there for you.
Avatar n tn We have found that the be4stway to avoid this is by having our daughter check her blood 6-8 times a day. When her blood sugar is over 225 we have her check for ketone thru her urine. If she has ketones we give her extra no carb fluids and contact per endocrinologist on how to adjust her insulin dosage. We do this because sometimes she has ketones due to being ill other times it is a missed bolus from the pump or not enough insulin.
Avatar m tn Once over 80% of the beta cells are destroyed, the body is no longer able to regulate blood sugar levels and the patient develops some or all of the classic symptoms of diabetes: *excessive thirst * excessive urination * excessive hunger * weight loss * fatigue * blurred vision * sugar and ketones in the urine I hope this has been helpful to you
Avatar n tn So the ER repeated the urine test that her DR did and sure enough it came back with ketones and sugar but lower levels. They sent us home basically with no answers and I am worried sick, has anybody ever heard of this before? They also took a look at her liver and said all the test came back normal. I would really appreciate ANY feedback. I thank you in advance.
Avatar m tn "had my urine tested and she said it showed everything including glucose," I don't know what is meant by "it showed everything". However, when your body has excess blood sugar it is expelled through the kidneys via urine as a by product called Ketones. Too much Ketones can lead to one developing a potential life threatening condition called Ketoacidosis. "But when my blood was tested abit later my glucose was normal.
Avatar n tn This is the presence of high levels of keytones simultaneous with high blood sugar levels. It reflects that the body is burning its own fat (regardless of how many carbs are eaten) because insulin is not able to work. This can be life threatening. A low carb diet can be very effective in controlling blood sugars. The more extreme carb restriction is recommended by Dr. Richard Bernstein (Diabetes Solutions) of 35 g of carbs per day.
Avatar n tn After further thought, no exercise over 250 mg/dl comes to mind if ketones are present in the urine because you will further increase ketones in your blood which then may lead to DKA [diabetic ketoacidosis]. DKA can lead to serious health consequences such as coma.
Avatar n tn For example, this morning before I had eaten a bite, my blood sugar was 406. I checked my urine for ketones at that time and it showed moderate to high amounts of ketones in my urine. This afternoon after I ate, my blood sugar was 521 and I checked for ketones again. On the second check, it was negative to a trace. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to happen? From going high to moderate amounts to none at all?
418841 tn?1203549053 Do not hesitate to give more insulin as needed and test blood sugar levels often. You can test and give the Humalog about every 3-4 hours.
