Avatar m tn Getting up to eat something to bring normalcy says he is a type 1 diabetic, not enough glucose. The fruity breath points strongly to Ketoacidosis.
1327535 tn?1295227611 When glucose levels are excessive blood sugars are passed to the kidneys which in turn spill them out in the urine. If you breath has a fruity smell you need to see a doctor asap. Although rare in t2 diabetics, the possibility of diabetic ketoacidosis, a life threatening complication, may have surfaced. Get off the computer and call your doctor now.
1080243 tn?1262975363 Left untreated, diabetic ketoacidosis can lead to a diabetic coma. Diabetic ketoacidosis is most common in people who have type 1 diabetes, but it can also affect people who have type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes. â– Diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome. If your blood sugar level tops 600 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 33 millimoles per liter (mmol/L), the condition is known as diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome. When your blood sugar gets this high, your blood becomes thick and syrupy.
Avatar n tn Try controlling and managing your unknown glucose levels better. If your skin is sweet fruity smelling and you have full-blown, uncorrected diabetes it can lead to ketoacidosis [DKA], the body has little or no insulin. DKA if left untreated can lead to diabetic coma or death. If your levels are within acceptable ranges you need to get blood work performed as there are a number of disorders which can cause a fruity/sweet smell on the skin.

Avatar n tn There are times when I check my urine for ketones when my blood glucose is particularly high. For example, this morning before I had eaten a bite, my blood sugar was 406. I checked my urine for ketones at that time and it showed moderate to high amounts of ketones in my urine. This afternoon after I ate, my blood sugar was 521 and I checked for ketones again. On the second check, it was negative to a trace. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to happen?
Avatar m tn I always take 2 or 3 pulkas or chapathis during night every day and i dont eat rice during night.. But whenever i check the blood glucose levels with the glucometer, i find that the fasting values are not within the range of normal values viz 110 for fasting. but the post lunch levels always within the normal range of viz 140.The random levels always varies from 125 to 150. Kindly advise me whether i am diabetic and do i have to take medicine for diabetes?
Avatar f tn s urine or blood shows large amounts of ketones, this can lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis or DKA. This is a life-threatening emergency which occurs when blood sugars have been consistenly over 300. This occurs more commonly in Type 1's, often at diagnosis, but can also occur in Type 2's who have been diagnosed long enough that they don't produce much insulin or the insulin production is overwhelmed by serious infection or stress.
Avatar n tn There are several tests that they can do that are simple that can tell if you are have high blood sugars or if you are diabetic. The ranges of acceptable blood sugars usually depend on your age and sometimes build.
1388299 tn?1279740904 Ketones are a bit more dangerous than that. It generally indicates that you are running dangerously high blood sugars, which put you at risk for DKA. (Diabetic Ketoacidosis). You don't say what your blood sugars are. If they are 300+ you can try and bring them down by doing (careful) insulin corrections. If you aren't able to bring them down you should call your doctor. Also drink a lot of water to keep from getting dehydrated.
484160 tn?1343397921 The treatment for ketoacidosis is to correct the high blood glucose level by giving more insulin, including extra fluid to prevent dehydration. I don't know what you mean by "the pacemaker thing for the stomach?", can only assume it is a stomach pump to empty its contents caused by gastroparesis. Have you talked with your sisters doctor/s? Or the lead nurse?
Avatar n tn I am a type 2 diabetic and recently lost my job and my health insurance, I have not been able to afford to get my medicines and my blood glucose levels have been horrible, I ran out of glucose strips about a month and a half ago and they were running in the high 300's and even into the 400's. Here lately I have been going to the bathroom ALOT and I'm sure my keytones are very high, because I have lost about 30 lbs. in the last 2 months.
Avatar n tn I didn't read the whole article. First few pages were so unreal, I couldn't read the rest. Well, if an individual's staple food are carbs, and he's a diabetic of any type, then there's no other way to lower the blood glucose except with drugs. That's the law of the nature. It's gonna be like that untill someone extraordinary finds a way to completely fix type 2. Type 1 will never be fixed, but one day we may understand why it happens and will be preventable.
1947749 tn?1324329389 I am as confused as ever. Her ped sent us home with an order to do a blood draw for a glucose test. Which we are going into the holiday weekend >.< She is thinking pre-diabetes with a possibility of hyperglycemia. Her A1C just came back still in range but I tested her ketones this morning and she has small amounts. Am I missing something here? She is still all over the place with her numbers. I am as confused as ever. Thanks for all of the responses.
Avatar m tn But they said after my high a1c test, i got blood drawn 10 minuters later, and they said the results of that blood test is that my glucose levels were low 10 minutes later. Can anyone explain this?
Avatar n tn Something needs to be done before you have to call 911 to treat diabetic ketoacidosis. I have been hospitalized for this 7 different times, each time being admitted to the icu. As soon as the vomitting start, I head straight for the emergency room because I have done this a few times and I know when its starting to get bad. I start to fell like I cant breathe. then I start vomitting. I also agree that the doctor doesnt seem to know what hes doing.
Avatar n tn The term is short for diabetic ketoacidosis. This is when high glucose levels (often due to sickness such as a virus) cause the body to start using up its own stores of fat in order to have something to convert to energy. It can be lethal if not treated very quickly, especially in children. This is why hospitals usually hospitalize diabetic children who have ketones showing in their urine (which shows that they are in this condition).
Avatar n tn What other conditions can this trend be seen in? Can glucose values still be on the rise up to 2hrs in non-diabetic individuals? Previously, I came across a glucose tolerance graph illustrating glucose values (mg/dL) plotted against time (in minutes)for several conditions. Most of these graphs depict a glucose peak value at 30 to 60 minutes with a decrease in values when approaching 90 to 120 minutes.
Avatar n tn Hello, you are right to be concerned. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Your nephew's scores are so high, and have been so high for so long, that he's likely experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis. That is the reason he is so thin, because his body isn't getting enough insulin, causing it to consume itself in order to survive. This is a VERY deadly condition.
Avatar n tn You have flags for diabetes, particuliarly the floaters. All of the rest are also sometimes connected with insulin utilization issues. So.....the next step is to get a full diabetic screen. This is not a "single" test. You need either a fasting glucose test or an insulkin clamp protocol. Your opthamologist should have suggested this.
Avatar n tn We are sceptical of what doctors say and always try to find first hand from others their experience he was misdiagnosed twicw before he went into ketoacidosis and they figured out he was diabetic. So any info from people who live with diabetes is more useful than a doctors observations at times. And thanks for your reply.
