alcohol

Avatar m tn Because measurement of this enzyme is easy and inexpensive, it has generally been used for early detection of chronic alcohol misuse. However, serum GGT activity loses its specificity for alcohol in more advanced liver disease because its activity is elevated in hepatic inflammation and more advanced liver disease regardless of the cause.
Avatar n tn I drink several times a week, usually 5-6 beers. With other results normal, is alcohol the cause of the high serum iron? I take a lot of vitamin supplements, including a multi-vitamin with iron. If I stop drinking will the iron level go down? If so, how long will it take?
Avatar n tn Haemochromatosis causes weakness, fatigue, and pain in the right hypochondrium near the liver. A high dietary intake of iron, alcohol intake, multiple blood transfusions and hemolytic anemia can lead to high iron levels. Serum iron levels fluctuate during the day so it is preferred that the test should be done fasting. Other tests like trnasferrin saturation and TIBC may be needed. Liver biopsy to measure iron content of liver tissue confirms the diagnosis. Seek the opinion of hepatologist.
Avatar m tn My doctor gave me vitamin d supplements and then I started taking 2,000 IU per day. Recently, I had another blood test and my serum phosphate had dropped to 1.6 mg/dl with normal being 2.5 mg/dl - 5 mg/dl for the lab that did the test. Is this something I should be concerned about and pursue with the doctor or is this normal? My vitamin d-25 levels have all been in the 20-30 mg/dl range since I started feeling ill. Also, I've had a hard time finding supplements that contain phosphorus.
Avatar n tn Also pls decrease his alcohol intake.Enzymes which aid in breakdown of alcohol are synthesized by the liver and so consumption of alcohol also adds to the extra pressure. Moreover, consultation of a hepatologist and a detailed investigational profile of the liver are necessary at the moment. Hope it helps.Kind regards.

Avatar f tn On Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, I drank alcohol. It was about an average amount. Today is Monday, and as I was driving home from my trip we stopped off at a restaurant with really salty fries. After I ate the fries, my liver felt like it was bubbling. It would occur almost every few minutes and last for a bit. Is my liver disinigrating? It doesn't cause pain either. I also have drank a higher amount of alcohol before and nothing happend. What is this? Will it go away?

2046116 tn?1330102721 Yes my blood work is fine. Haemoglobin is good, blood count is good, white blood cells good and blood pressure is normal. No cancer. I am not anaemic. There is no problem showing, but there is obviously one. I can tell you when one is going to start. I get immense pressure in my head, eyes and gums, then out of no where bleed. After bleeding, due to so much blood loss, I get a headache and really dizzy. They have no explanation. can you think of anything?
Avatar f tn If you are worried about Alcoholic hepatitis, it resolves completely or improves greatly following 6-12 months of alcohol abstinence, and continued improvement may be observed for several years. There is a possibility that your enzymes may not return to absolute normal values if you get them checked within one month of alcohol abstinence. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn I was dx with Lyme Disease finally by the test doctors trust which is the Western Blot, where as the ELISA serum blood test is usually rarely accurate in the Lyme Literate and Centers for Disease Control community. Avatar n tn Long-term alcohol use causes damage to the heart muscles called alcoholic cardiomyopathy, with symptoms ranging from chronic shortness of breath to heart failure. Heart muscle damage can raise the level of an enzyme named creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in the blood. However, other factors such as age, sex, and exercise also affect CPK levels. In fact, elevated CPK is common in adults who exercise regularly. Normal levels of serum CPK vary from 0 to approximately 188 micrograms per liter.
2038871 tn?1329798210 Factors independently associated with raised serum AFP in patients with cirrhosis were female gender, black race, decreased platelet count, increased serum AST/ALT ratio, serum ferritin, and Mallory bodies in liver biopsies. Serum AFP levels decreased significantly during therapy with pegylated interferon α-2a and ribavirin. HCC was identified in six subjects, only three of whom had AFP>20 ng/mL.
